This seems a bit extreme but I'm not surprised. Our culture is so focused on independence that it's easy to end up feeling isolated and that's when our vices get the best of us. Ideally our coaches would be our family and friends but I suppose whatever works.
I don't know about sober coaches, but I bet he hired the hottest one they had!! LOL. He and sobriety don't currently fit in the same sentence. His car has mysteriously been stolen and wrecked so many times I can't remember how many. The car is always at the bottom of a ditch and he is always home sleeping by the time the cops get there. Isn't that a little odd???
There are many roads to God. The twelve step program has a sixth step which speaks to positive affirmations. I want to wish you good health, happiness and a life of service to your fellow travelers. May God bless you and me too.
so be on the lookout for a breaking story about him terrorizing his new sober coach. no one else can make you stop what you are doing wrong, except the police.
"Sober Coach"... ummmm... isn't that what people in substance abuse have called a "sponsor" for years and years?? So, we make up a new name for something that isn't new, and that makes it new??
Yes, sponsors do it for free-helps them stay sober as much as helping the drunk they help. Why it works, no one really knows, but it has since the mid-1930's when a businessman & a medical Dr. in Akron, Ohio "discovered" how they could stay sober. They still have the greatest success rate of helping to overcome addiction.
Now you know where all the jokes about "wanting to change" came about. I've never believed that Sheen truly wanted to stay sober, & unless his desire for sobriety is there, this is just another exercise in futility. It DOES appear that Robt. Downey got the message & hopefully he will stay sober; so much talent. but often it takes many tries. I pray that Sheen won't O.D. in the process of getting sober.
Ask any long-time sober person & they will tell you essentially the same thing I just said. Hubby here has been sober THIS WAY for over 27+ yrs. But my guess is that Charlie just hasn't had enough to drink so far. Maybe if he ever gets sick & tired of being sick & tired, he might have a chance. Until then, addiction is as cunning, baffling & powerful for him as it is for everyone else.
P.S. I feel so sorry for his parents, brother & sister, but esp. his father. That man has so much serenity & this must be killing him.
It's a yuppie thing. Young people have become so disconnected from actual human contact that they have to turn to a stranger to tell them how to live their lives.
My parents taught me how to conduct my life and I taught my children how to conduct their lives. Didn't have 1,000 "friends" on a computer so we had to rely on our flesh and blood family. I found that it worked just fine.
Roy Tarpley was one of the most talented basketball players to enter the NBA. The Dallas Mavericks signed him. Mr. Tarpley had a drug addiction and was on the sidelines as much as he played. The Mavericks hired a "sober coach" for him and it didn't work. Then they arranged for his mother to go to Dallas to live with him and keep him clean. Didn't work.
Mr. Tarpley was kicked off of the team and out of the league. He had everything going for him but just couldn't beat his addictions.
One difference in him and Charlie Sheen is his not being violent. He didn't slap women around or "wreck his cars".
I saw Mr. Tarpley and his mother in a book store in Dallas and had a great conversation with them.
you have got to be kidding. the best lessons are the hardest learned and he needs to fall flat on his face and not be treated with kid gloves. if it was you or me we would never get the leniency these celebrities get.
A "sober coach" will accomplish nothing more than giving Mr. Sheen a fancy excuse when he fails... again. It won't be his own fault, of course. It will be that the coach failed in his duties to keep Mr. Sheen sober and out of trouble. Mr. Sheen does not and will not take personal responsibility for his actions, as has been the case to date; the court further enabled him with nothing but a slap on the hand for his previous alcohol-fueled domestic abuse case in Aspen. After all, Aspen must cater to these celebs if they want to keep the big money rolling in. His latest rampage in NY appears to have netted no charges filed by police or the hotel... not even a charge of disorderly conduct, or for damages incurred in the hotel. Somehow I think that would not have been the case if it were an "ordinary" citizen who was involved. This "sober coach" provides Mr. Sheen with just another excuse and a scapegoat to take the blame.
You don't need a coach you need a friend. I mean a real friend not some hanger on. I guess when you get rich enough you don't really have any true friends just people hanging out with you for your money.
I think I speak for everyone when I say .... "JESUS H. CHRIST"....... Charlie Sheen... or shall I say Estevez? Get a grip, a Sober coach? He has been fighting this for how many years now? Still cant behve... I think the next step is just to have "a lobotomy and some tights"... whoops that was from the breakfast club where your older brother seems to have a grip on things.
Once again, Americans figure out how to give away personal responsibility and dump it on another person, the "sober coach". AA teaches you to analyse, critique and change your life with healthier mental and physical choices. Your sponsor encourages and supports you, but let you make your own mistakes and breakthroughs. After all, if you don't want it, you won't get sober. No one else can make you choose to walk away.
Go to AA meetings, ask for help, learn to listen uncritically, adopt a model for sharing with peers outside of meetings, accept the mentorship of a sponsor, work the 12 steps. This is the answer for drinking problems; and it is free of charge. Most AA members toss a buck into the hat at meetings for coffee and rent on the meeting room. Sure beats hiring a full-time employee. On the other hand, I'm available for hire for only $200 per day, from November to March.
This seems a bit extreme but I'm not surprised. Our culture is so focused on independence that it's easy to end up feeling isolated and that's when our vices get the best of us. Ideally our coaches would be our family and friends but I suppose whatever works.
Wow, great point! I agree.
Money is whatever works - if you have it you can get whatever you want.
Exception: Self esteem, Self confidence, Self reliance, Self worth, Self determination, Self restraint...ect, ect, ect...
Money can never buy you eternal life.

Dear Mr. Sheen,
There are many roads to God. The twelve step program has a sixth step which speaks to positive affirmations. I want to wish you good health, happiness and a life of service to your fellow travelers. May God bless you and me too.

Mary Louise Blazevic

You're right. Other people can only help if you genuinely want to be helped.
ka56,
you are so right.
If anyone ever has a problem with being a pushover, I am for hire as an a-hole coach.
I could use the work and have experience.

I'm guessing mr. sheen's coach's salary is far larger than a "sponsor" who I'm guessing does it at no charge.

No big deal. I have a personal trainer in the gym. Part of what I'm buying is babysitting services. I'm not always the most motivated.

It was heartbreaking to watch his "train wreck".
