This seems like a high percentage, but in traditional and historical black culture the unwed mother is not considered as problematic as in white culture. The black community has relied on the social welfare system for financial and psychological support for so many years, that the unwed mother is encouraged to have a large family, if not overtly, at least in a subtle and matrilineal manner.
And, who's fault is that? We need to look at both sides of the coin here. Historically, if you look at the Decision Makers in our Country for the last 200+ years, they're mostly white, Christian, male.
They too, (our Leadership), have also made some very bad choices. And, they certainly have not done enough to educate these women, and bring them up from poverty, but rather they (our Congress) continues to "enable" them -- withOUT, providing the impetus to provide better not only for their own lives, but for their children.
Instead, let's throw some money at them, and the problem will go away. Well, that doesn't happen, does it?
If they got married before having children it would be less of a struggle. This is what you get when you let the animal inside loose. No matter what color. A little restraint please.
Does this surprise anyone? Simple solution is to stop paying them to have kids! The welfare system keeps giving. The more kids the more money thats the attitude blacks have. Some whites too. A recent survey in a local grade school kids were asked "What is their plans as adults?" 50% of the the black kids answered have babies and collect welfare! So maybe they need to be taught how to close their legs and the men how to zip up their pants!! Real men help raise their kids not out selling dope or shooting up people.
damp67954, yes, I agree with you to a certain degree, but it's a catch 22 situation. You cut the mother's off, and the children do not receive proper medical care or nutrition, and that just compounds the problem. There is no easy answer here.
Teaching abstinence for all ethnic groups has also "not" worked. We need to better educate our youth. We need to teach them that there can be a better life for them if they make "better choices." We're not doing that.
I'm sure, there is a way to find something or someone else to blame for this situation, other than themselves of course! That way the all will have to pay for the errors of many or of some. Nothing new under the sun!
This is the result of 50 years of Liberal Democrat Welfare Programs! Prior to the Modern age of the Civil Rights Era, Most Black Families, even if desparately poor, declared shame on unwed Black women having babies. In a Social Consciousness, Liberal Democrat "Welfare" Programs beginning heavily with Johnson's New Society Welfare Program, the Percentage of unwed Black Mothers escalated exponentially when Black women were PAID for each Child without a Father. After 50 years of this failed welfare, we have unwed Black women having extra babies to garner an extra $1000 each year in cash when filing Income Taxes. They have it down to a fine art - The law does not limit the number of eligable children, but it DOES limit earned jobs income to $15000 per year -- This results in inwed Black women taking low paying jobs and quitting those jobs when they reach $15000 in income. New Tax Laws coming in 2011 will limit the number of children eligible to 3 and there is an as yet unpassed mandate to cut the payment to $500 instead of $1000 per child. The results are clearly stated in this article -- Unwed Black Mothers are now an entrenched part of Black Society today and the number of Black people below the Poverty Line has NOT DECREASED in 50 years of Welfare Spending! The War on Poverty is Lost!
sziker, I'm a Republican. Where was our Party??? It is a political issue because both parties have failed miserably in regard to this issue.
We need to demand more from our Leadership -- ALL of our leadership. If memory serves me, Republicans have been serving in Congress for the past 100 years or so ....., and I do believe they also have a responsibility in making laws. I do believe they also have had the power at various times in history to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and how to best apply resources (aka: money) toward social issues.
Where have they been?
Is anybody really surprised by these findings?
The effect of this disease and our liberal acceptance of it (as if it is simply a cultural difference and something that should not even be discussed openly) is progressing on the rest of society like a plague. The same problem with white mothers is on the increase too. Sooner or later our immoral actions will catch up with us all. With gluttonous people it is diabetes and heart disease, with smokers it is cancer, with heavy drinkers it is cirrhosis of the liver, with open unprotected homosexuality it is aids, with this.....who knows, but you can bet on it.....it will be something.
YELDARB27, my roots are predominately white and Christian. We're somewhat in agreement. The issue of teen pregnancy has truly begun to cross all ethnic groups, and is getting much worse.
Immoral, or not. They're teenagers. They do not fully understand the consequences of their actions, and we as the adult peer group are not doing our jobs to keep them from what I call, "getting into trouble." Once the child is born, it's too late.
We need to start at the root of the problem instead of condemning the children having babies.
Agree, but please remember until everyone sees it and understands it for what it is, "WRONG", they will not see the need to change. You are right on the spot with the fact that today's parents are enablers allowing their children to think it is OK. Now they are all raising children AND grandchildren.
So one believes the right thing to do is to return to social ostracism of mothers of illegitimate children? That's a great idea, and I'll agree to it if and when we can equally ostracize the fathers of these illegitimate children as well.
Only when there is equal treatment will it be fair. Otherwise as a woman I demand that we remain in the future where we are now. Women have born enough guilt and blame for their choices and mistakes.
Please do not mistake what I really mean. Ostracise, yes. the promiscuous dead beat dads just as well as the promiscuous self-respect lacking moms. It is not the tax payers responsibility to pay for someone else's lack of self-control no matter what their race or sex is.
Peridot, from what I gathered from the article, 3/4 or all black children are born out of marriage. Politics aside, what that means to me is these mother's have severe self-esteem issues. The doctor in this article has dedicated her entire life to work in improving the lot of black children being brought into this world, and is trying to convey the message that it takes 2 to raise a child. The doctor has stated that this has become a society issue for the black community. She is doing the best she can, but more Americans -- of all races -- need to step up.
This issue, in my humble opinion, does not have a color, it's all of our problem. Systemically, we do not do enough in this country to empower women -- regardless of race.
This is tragic. That is the only way, and the best way, I can describe this.
Anyone can beat me up from a political standpoint. I am a moderate Republican, and I truly believe we are not doing enough for future generations, and we all need to lend a hand and do our part. These children are born "not having a future," unless we -- as a Country -- start lifting these people out of poverty.
How can we turn a blind eye away from these babies who did not ask to be born in the first place?
We, as Americans, are losing our way because we just say, "not my problem." Guess what? It's all of our problem. And, these children deserve a better life.
Last post I made was 3 hours ago, and not one other post. Yes, this is truly an issue that is near and dear to American's hearts. How tragic.
We cannot see our noses despite our faces. This is the cast-away society that everyone wishes to forget. However ... we cannot forget them because they are the fabric our our society, and in order for us to succeed, they must too.
