No more choices. Telling Businesses what they can and cannot produce, such as this drink. Ban this, ban that. Government is making all of them for you. This is what the majority of voters didn't realize would happen in the last Election.
Now how do most people like the intrusions and restrictions upon our lives. Today it is the Homeland Security "Pat Downs", (invasion of your 'junk") and making little girls hysterical at the airport during these feel ups "; tomorrow it will be something else; poor kids, they want to take the toys away from them at Mc Donald's. The Government knows what is best for us. I say, I know what's best for me. No more obesity. Huh?
Who asked the US citizens what we want? It is our Country, but it slowly turning into a 'no choice option".
Hopefully in 2012, we'll be free again to do whatever we want within Legal limits after the Government turns over to another System.
There isn't even access to vehicles inside the C-ring (or any other ring) at the Pentagon, hence no need for the "No Parking" sign. That's not a picture of the Pentagon.
And what makes you think a 757 can't go 500 mph at sea level? That's well below the speed of sound (720 mph), and well within a 757's capabilities.
Just another lunatic effort at convincing the rest of us of your deranged positions.
Rage, I agree with you 100%. I want less government in my life. I CAN make intelligent decisions with the information I have available and I don't need decisions dictated to me by decree because a minority of people don't, won't or can't make their own rational decisions.
I substantially agree but there is a fine line between protecting the public from truly unsafe products and overreacting because basically many young people are clueless. It is a historical fact that you need some kind of governmental regulation and oversight for things like keeping the food supply safe. There are people that will try to sell you things that will injure or kill you to make a buck. I think in some cases the government is overstepping its bounds and trying to ban things that some politically charged group finds objectionable.
With this and things like airport security efforts, the problem is that as soon as some kids are poisoned, or another plane goes down everyone starts screaming how enough is not being done. Everyone cries about crime, but then whines about having to pay the Police. Oh protect us from the terrorist, but don't hassle me at the airport. To the airport guy so worried about his junk, nobody cares about your junk, especially the TSA officer that has to touch a thousand sweaty crotches a day.
I have traveled in a number of countries where this is SOP. Its not a big deal and its done so that some A-hole is not able to waste you and perhaps your family at 30,000 feet. Grow up Americans.
I think the lunacy, my shill friend HeeNow, is the fact that anyone with two brain cells to rub together, even without thoroughly investigating 9/11, can see the outcome and make a reasonable deduction as to who was involved.
Shill. or just a regular tv watching, MSM drone...I hope you're awakening is soon.
OH NO!! I love Four Loko... should be a personal decision whether or not to drink it. The government has too much to say about what I can or can't put in my body!!! Ummmm, lol that didn't sound right, did it? :)
Alchohol is a depressant, and the caffeine would, what, make the drinker more alert? Giving coffee to someone who's drunk only makes them an awake drunk. I never got into that practice back before I gave up the party scene...getting drunk then drinking coffee. Seems to me long term doing that would really trash your heart. Maybe in the day of energy drinks like Rockstar, and the big cans they sell, it was too confusing for young, Obama-cons and they didn't bother to read the fine print.
It kinda of sounds as if you might not be too discriminating about whats goes into your body in any case. Oh, I guess that did not sound right either. (-;
Ok - for those of you that have not tried this stuff yet, imagine drinking a bunch of random liquor and kool aid, then throwing it up in your mouth and swallowing it again. This stuff tastes like the second swallow.
This stuff doesn't seem very appealing to me, but now that they're going to ban it, you better believe I'm going to go buy some to see what the big deal is.
The problem with this particular kind of drink is the fact that ONE can of this stuff is equivalent to 3 beers and 3 cups of coffee.(caffeine, guarana & taurine) That is the problem. Especially among young adults who are being hospitalized after one or two cans of these kinds of drinks.
A good ol fashion rum and coke doesn't have the same dangers as one of these drinks. A Rum and Coke is usually a glass, with ice, with a shot of rum and mixed with coke.
I think makers of these drinks thought they were on to something great, but, they didn't think of the consequences. Especially with the young adults they target this drink to.
hokey mom. I also live in AZ, are you one of those people that thinks that the underage girl that drove into a house at 5am with an alcohol level 3 times the legal rate is not to blame but rather that evil drink? When I first heard of Four Loko the first thing that came to mind was, it cant be good for you. But from knowing that something is bad for you and getting it banned its not the answer. People should be responsible for their own actions
ivandrz - HELL NO it wasn't the drink...It was the driver. She is 100% responsible. Also, I haven't said that I think the government should force the banning of this drink, however, I am concerned it's not a very safe drink. And have pointed out the reasons I think so. I genuinely think it's an unsafe drink especially in the hands of someone that is looking to get completely trashed.
AZhockeymom- if the mindset is to get wasted what does it matter? You can drink all you want and have a redbull can't you? I curious to know how much $$ is tied up in this. The govn't has nothing better to spend money on or fix?
Ok, so I've typed and deleted and then typed and deleted and I come to one conclusion on what my worry is. So rather than bore you with my several big long explanations of what my bottom line is. Bottom Line: I worry about alcohol poisoning. It's already a problem with the young-ins especially. I think the combination is potentially dangerous. And, as I understand, its causing a problem already in college students at a dangerous level, with less consumption.
I'm glad that the makers of Four Loco are going to change their drink to less caffeine.
Hockeymom - you actually underestimated the ingredients. One 24 oz can is the equivalent of 4 average beers plus 6 cups of coffee. However, the hangover from one 24 oz. can is the equivalent of a hangover from a 12 pack of beer plus 5 shots of Jager. It is truly disgusting.
Caffeine is bad enough....mix with alcohol? Ummmmm. NOT a good idea. BAN em!!!!!!!! (and then move on to eliminate caffeine from all drinks, PLEASE! No more candy bars with "boost" etc)
I am most definitely not joking. Many visits to the porcelain throne, nights of vomiting and violent shaking and pain, blindness, and even ER trips as a result of hidden caffeine causing migraines as bad as strokes will make a person rather bitter about the current trend to put caffeine in EVERYthing possible. It is not a necessary thing, and is extremely harmful to anyone sensitive to it.
YES, I say BAN the substance. Humans do not need it!! And wayyyy too many are hooked to it!
Only someone who has never been through the pain equivalent of a car accident and not be able to stop it could come up with that heap of garbage, "GunnyC#$P!"
Oh, my Bad. 3 shots, one in the leg, two in the pelvic. I can just imagine how much you hurt while I spent 20 years protecting your freedom of speech. Oh, and by the way, I wrecked my truck 4 times since then, had a life-flight heart-attack that damn near killed me. I hope you are not suffering too bad for your service to OUR country.
Gee- maybe you could try to stay on subject....that would help.
Sorry you got shot.
Other than that, nothing you said could possibly justify turning to the bottle for an alcoholic binge with caffeine. But, as you point out, you still can. Just leave alone the stuff I can still have with no caffeine or alcohol (I prefer to not consume alcohol).
So enjoy.
And leave me alone.
(Apparently I hit a nerve enough for you to care to look up what I post...notice anything about the fact that you were COMPLETELY WRONG about so-called "binging"? What on EARTH have I written on ANY post that would indicate I binge? On ANYthing???? Clue me in 'cause I sure don't remember ever writing anything that mentions "binging" on anything!!! Geez, work on your 1st grade reading comprehension then re-join the rest of the post-graduate class, 'Mkay?)
Talk about hitting a nerve. You are the perfect example of where America is heading. Sad. Teach your children well.. I have. And I don't drink. And you are alone.
Whoa there, how does your sensitivity to caffeine justify a ban? I am just fine with pounds of it. This is as bad as the first lady wanting to ban salt in food. Holy crap, I can make my own bad choices. I don’t need the nanny state to ruin my life. How much do you want to bet that this is the works for the “public good” since my tax dollars will soon be paying for healthcare? Welcome to Amerifail!
and then move on to eliminate caffeine from all drinks, PLEASE! No more candy bars with "boost" etc
Miskaffon, this is what you said in your first post. It is the second half, which goes way past removing caffine from alcoholic beverages.
YES, I say BAN the substance. Humans do not need it!! And wayyyy too many are hooked to it!
Again, your words. I am an adult, and I can certainly make my own choices. I am all for banning alcoholic energy drinks, since I had misgivings about them from the start. However, if you do not like (or in your case, cannot tolerate) caffine, then DO NOT BUY the product!! With regards to items like "boost candy bars" (your words), declining sales will talk far louder than your words or a court-order ever will. (10 years of non-alcohol beverage sales experience speaking.)
And keep your mitts OFF my coffee! I like it just as it is: strong-flavored and caffinated, thank you. Caffine is a natural byproduct of roasting and brewing. (Decaff coffee is 'genetically altered' so as not to contain caffine.) I do not need an idiot politician telling me what to drink.
Yes, that's a stroke of genius. Ban caffeine, because you can't handle it. Even though millions of other people have no issue with it. But you don't like it, so it should be banned. People like you are what makes life miserable.
I would like to call a ban on sanctimonious pretentious people that think they know what is best for everyone because they don't like something. You don't like drinks like Four Loco (never tried it myself but I am not into a fruity kind of drink when it comes to drinking) then here is something to try.....DON'T BUY THE FREAKING PRODUCT!
I have puked from Tequila but that doesn't mean that it is my RIGHT to try to ban something that made me sick. I just don't drink the stuff anymore simple as that. Just because something offends you doesn't give you the right to take it away from everyone else.
Stop the presses! A bunch of under age kids got sick from drinking too much alcohol. I bet that's never happened before. I guess it's time to repeal the 21st Amendment.
I am allergic to caffeine. It'll make me horribly ill, very similar to the reactions that you've described. So you know what I do? I DON'T CONSUME IT. I'm careful to research the products I buy (they do stick caffeine into lots of things that you think it wouldn't be in, such as medications) so that I don't accidentally ingest it. I'm not perfect - I've had some misses over the years, but avoiding a substance I'm allergic to is MY responsibility. Not the government's.
I would like a ban on these drinks specifically, because they have been PROVEN to be **EXTREMELY** dangerous. I don't want some grouch on a bender to chug down a few of these and not realize they are very dangerously snooked and kill me or my kids on the road!
As far as other soft drinks; I've been slowly giving them up. But frekkin' fracks of nature (sarcasm if you can't get the picture!!) who *demand* caffeine in EVERY thing they consume have been getting their wishes granted; caffeine has been added to regular soft drink products (7UP, Sprite, Root Beer, and others)... even candy bars for frakkin' out loud. Come ON! Isn't every soft drink on earth bad enough, you have to add caffeine to all of them now?????
Guess what? Caffeine is an ADDICTION! Pure and simple; and not as benign as people claim. I don't care that much as long as it doesn't result in harm to my family or to me in hidden ingredients in a snack I have some day. (Blood pressure, insomnia, irritatibilty, heart disease, tumor growth- thanks caffeine).....
Caffeine and alcohol- believe it or not, folks, are NOT required or even recommended parts of a human diet. Sorry to bum ya' out!
There are no studies that show that if you drinks caffine and alcohol together that it is any more harmful than if you drink them seperately. If you do almost anything to excess, it can be harmful or fatal. If you ban everything that is potentially harmful if misused we all would be pretty muck relagated to life of sitting in an empty room 24/7.
Banning these drinks is stupid and just a political move, anyway. You can get the same thing from mixing up a big can of Red Bull and an unhealthy dose of vodka. I personally like these drinks, especially Joose. They are a great way to start the night off if you're planning on tipping mass quantities back. Yes, I know this is bad for my health, so all you teetotalers out there can spare me your sanctimony.
They sell caffiene pills in every convience, grocery, drug store. I can assure you that the caffiene pills have a high dose of caffiene then in the can of Joose
Stormrider - Sure there might be more caffeine in a pill,(usually200mg) but the the Four Locotype drinks also have Taurine & Guarana which is also an energy boost. PLUS you add in the 3 times the amount of alcohol in one can.
Me and My college buddies used to go out and drink until 6 am, At 4 am we usually started to pop caffine pills with cups of coffee and rum. It only killed one of us.
1) Puke: not unless I have CAFFEINE!!! (or some sort of stomach virus) 2) I don't drink alcohol; maybe 3 oz max per year if that, sharing a tiny glass of wine with my husband. (what a joke about "boyfriends/girlfriends" Haha very funny!! If you knew me at ALL you would know how absolutely hilarious that comment was- thanks for the laugh!!). 3) NEVER had ANY sort of drug not prescribed by a doctor that is perfectly legal and taken only by direction, or over-the-counter as directed. 4) NEVER been "stoned" 5) Have no idea how you got that idea from my post about being sensitive to CAFFEINE....
Ooooh. Husband in caps. How's that working out for ya. Apparently he is pre-occupied with something else, or he would be monitoring your every post. Oh, maybe not. Maybe you have and honest and open relationship and life is just sunshine and lollipops.; well, lets hope that's it. What the heck ever, leave me alone!..lmao. Oh, and thanks for giving me your life's story on the internet. Jesus.
Gunny- by the way, in all seriousness, I do thank you for serving our country.
I did not chose military service due to my tendency toward migraines (had them since I was FIVE years old) and due to concerns that by the time I'd enter the service I was having trouble with the nerves in my arms; not sure I could have had the strength to pass basic. I was not able to hold a pencil long enough to write out college notes more than one side of a lined page- that would not have been a good way to try holding weapons, etc. Many surgeries later I have better grip strength...but still struggle with my hands letting books, brushes, or anything heavy or bulky loose without any control. That condition has no issue with weight at all; when I began having trouble I was quite thin.
I do feel a great amount of gratitude for those who have served. Thank you again.
And I apologize for being so harsh in my responses. I was a little angry that someone thought my post pointing out that hidden caffeine in drinks and foods was a joke was extremely frustrating to me. I did not mean to begin taking out that anger on you. I was out of hand but it is too late to delete them now.
My initial post was a good part sarcasm....but with a grain of truth.
Fifteen and a half years of a very happy marriage. Two kids on the honor roll at school (one with all A's). A solid, good job. A great home that we're remodeling. Getting exercise to help get healthier. No junk food in the house. Both kids in the Scouting program. Both kids with BMI levels in the mid-teens. I have never been "out" to drink in a bar in my entire life, ever. I'm an ace shot with a 9MM, have shot my husband's .45 with a great deal of joy (and a little fear I admit). I sing in a chorus that my employer sponsors. I volunteer with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and other community events. Volunteer at my parents' church when I'm home visiting them... Need I paint a healthier picture? Just thought you'd see it better if I went over my particulars. I'm not anywhere near the picture you tried to paint of me. More like the polar opposite.
I've dated exactly 2 guys in my entire lifetime (and no girls thanks anyway- not that I object I just happen to be hetero); the first I was engaged to for a few months, the second one is the one that we reached our 15th anniversary earlier this year.
Peace. I wish you and your families all the best this world has to offer. I didn't take anything you said harshly. Nor did I mean to be harsh. Our country is at the crossroads. Let's all hope we make the right decisions for our legacies. We really have no other choices. Good night. And have a great, restfull night with your spouse. We owe each other dignity. Let's not loose it.
Sorry again; I do feel bad for my cross posts. Way harsher than they should have been. I have to work on my sensitivity to what others say to me online. Yep- definitely a bad personal fault!
And, really, I don't care that much about what is in any food/drink item as long as it is very clearly labeled so I don't end up suffering the horrible pain- and actually, people have had strokes from migraines so I have to be very careful as I have high BP issues from my son's birth (pre-eclampsia).
And, peace be with you as we get close to the holiday season. Have a good one!
Ms K, you are over the line. You clearly don't understand what freedom means... as in you choose for yourself, I'll choose for me. You are sanctimonious.
Gunny---Stop that BS about serving your country and where you took hits. I served Whether you have served--the final score would have been the same, perhaps better.
And that should be the new marketing startegy for Four Loco. They can maintain a line of energy drinks and a line of alcoholic beverages. They should be marketed to be mixed together. No different then companies marketing Barcardi and Coke, Bailey's and Coffee, etc.
Hard one to comment on. On one hand I dislike any government interference in our private lives. Prochoice proponents, in regards to abortion, say it is the woman's body and her right to carry or not carry the child. Yet many of these same people want government to control what we eat or drink (McDonald Big Macs to alcoholic energy drinks) because they are harmful to us. I myself occasionally enjoy a rum and Coke, and not Coke Zero or the caffeine free stuff and I really like Irish coffee. These are a mixture of caffeine and alcohol too, if I'm not mistaken.
On the other hand I don't believe in the legalization of marijuana. Not in the medical use that does not involve rolling them in paper then smoking them but for recreational use. I also do not believe that addictive drugs should be made available without a doctor's prescription.
Of course anyone who decides to partake of these items against their doctor's recommendation is a fool anyway. But it is their choice, as long as it doesn't interfere with another person's life, liberty, or pursuit of happiness.
I have an FYI for ya, Boomer, you can't poison yourself by smoking too much pot, you just go to sleep. You CAN poison yourself by drinking too much alcohol. It happens every day.
And if you don't believe that addictive drugs shouldn't be made available without a prescription, then you just shot yourself in the foot, buddy, because the alcohol in that rum and Coke you like IS addictive. Want to know how I know? My father was a alcoholic from as far back as I can remember until the day he died. He died with his vodka and diet coke in the truck with him. So, you might want to go back and think about it.
Alcohol, like nicotine, is addictive to certain people, not everybody. You have my sympathies, my family has had to endure the problem as well. No, I am not addicted to alcohol, just as the majority of my family, past or present, is not. Believe you me, I went through the drinking stage following a bad divorce complicated by a move to a new city with no family or friends but eventually overcame it. No addiction.
I have also, in my 64+ years, have known people who smoked marijuana. I participated in a few sessions myself. Some of those people felt that cannabis was not enough and graduated to more potent drugs. Many of them are not alive today because of this predilection.
None of this, of course, is going to stop people from drinking or smoking (cannabis or nicotine). As long as there are young people there are going to be rebels.
The problem with people going on to other drugs (because Marijuana is suuuucchhh a gateway drug) is that people go on to other things to find out what else the Government has lied to them about. Reefer Madness is a movie funded by our Government that tells you that you smoke this stuff and you will turn into a murderer. When people do go out and try it and they find out they aren't suddenly a murderer (unless you count the poor cheetos and doritos may they rest in peace) you begin to wonder what else they lied about.
Personally I am all for legalization of everything. Then I would also suggest the punishments for hurting someone else while you are intoxicated or what have you become extremely harsh. Need to rob a store to feed your coke habit? Well we may lose some people due to violence unfortunately but you will NEVER see the free world again.
Alcohol is addictive to anyone if they drink enough. Every hangover is a mini-withdrawal, because you've been using an addictive drug, genius! Marijuana, OTOH, is not addictive for anyone. Alcohol is also the real "gateway drug" if that concept even has meaning. It is the first experience with intoxication for nearly everyone in our society.
Socialist nanny state... Do we really need the government protecting us from our own decisions.
God forbid I have the dangerous combination of Rum and Coke.
So much misinformation and vilification of just one brand of drink.
Face it people college age youth drink excessively. Banning a certain brand will not stop the problem. Why doesn't the FDA ban a certain brand of cigarette too.
Its the same argument as guns don't kill people, people kill people.
Its a behavioral choice, if you are shocked by a kid passing out on "four loko's" or any alcoholic beverage. Blame the parents or whomever raised him/her.
Stop the insane witch hunt.... your solution does nothing to stop the problem.
No it isn't hard to teach your kids how to drink responsibly prior to 21. I am sure I am not the only one here that was drinking in high school and I was given speeches about how to protect myself and to make sure that I don't EVER get behind the wheel while I am intoxicated and do my damndest to make sure that anyone I am around doesn't either.
Last week when this story surfaced I discussed it with a nephew who is a bartender in Chicago. He responded that Red Bull and Vodka has been a very popular mixed drink for some time now. And the Four Loko didnt seem to sound much different. So it seems the threat was, and is still, out there.
Oh please! It's sooooo much worse. Four Loko happens to be one of my favorites. The real problem is control. Learn to control the amount you drink and how fast you drink so you don't go overboard. If you can't do that you have no business drinking. And Four Loko doesn't hide its alcohol content, so in my opinion those kids absolutely knew what they were getting themselves into.
You have to admit, it won't hurt the companies that make and sell these drinks. They'll just market caffeine drinks and alcohol drinks separately, then give instructions on the proper way to mix them. This way they can make more money by selling more of their products.
Another knee jerk reaction trying to prevent what is unpreventable.
Don't people that understand Prohibition does not work? Is the FDA going to regulate REd Bull and Vodka? Rum and Coke? Irish Coffee?
Can't solve what is considered to be an issue by prohibiting something? Quit! Can't rectify what people view as an issue so easily? Give up and let the supposed issue continue regardless of how problematic it actually is.
Right ...YOU CANT FIX STUPID!!!!!!!!I took 20 Dexatrime and my brain stopped working,..bye-bye ephedrine...someone called me a name and i killed myself, it was the bullies bye-bye homo...i got spanked at school and was humiliated now my moms going to congress..by corporal punishment., hello punk-ass kids......errrrrrrr. Stupid is making is way up the ladder AGAIN, state alcohol picked it up then the food and drug struck again.. This company did what its suppose to do.
F.Y.I. here is some of the statement the owners released:
We have repeatedly contended – and still believe, as do many people throughout the country – that the combination of alcohol and caffeine is safe. If it were unsafe, popular drinks like rum and colas or Irish coffees that have been consumed safely and responsibly for years would face the same scrutiny that our products have recently faced.
"In addition, if our products were unsafe, we would not have expected the federal agency responsible for approving alcoholic beverage formulas – the Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) – to have approved them. Yet, all of our product formulas and packaging were reviewed and approved by the TTB before being offered to consumers.
"We are taking this step after trying – unsuccessfully – to navigate a difficult and politically-charged regulatory environment at both the state and federal levels.
"Over the last several months we have been more than willing to talk with regulators and policymakers on the national, state and local levels. Our company has a history of being as cooperative as we possibly can to ensure that our products are consumed safely, responsibly and only by of-age adults.
"We hoped that clear, consistent, industry-wide standards regulating pre-packaged caffeinated alcoholic beverages would be the outcome of these conversations. We also hoped others would share our commitment to transparency and fairness.
"By taking this action today, we are again demonstrating leadership, cooperation and responsible corporate citizenship."
Making concessions like this is something the company has a history of doing. It added multiple additional label warnings to its cans at the request of regulators; its alcohol-by-volume warnings are in a font as large as is allowed by law; and where required, Phusion sells versions of its product with reduced alcohol content.
Additionally, the company works with its distributors to share information about the appropriate way to stock and market its products; it works with retailers to provide point of sale information that reinforces the importance of asking for ID when selling any alcoholic beverage; and it includes warnings and labels on its cans that go above and beyond what the federal government requires – helping to ensure that consumers are informed and that its products don't end up in the hands of minors.
In an open letter to regulators this month, Phusion said it would welcome the opportunity to work together to create uniform standards for all liquor and malt-based caffeinated alcoholic beverages. The company also stated that uniformity means uniformity in how the laws are written, applied and enforced. The company, unfortunately, was not given that opportunity.
my addition to this snowball of Idiotizm
I remember someone saying... ASK NOT WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY!
SLAP THE PISS OUTTA THE IDIOTS YOU KNOW
may not help but a high level of satifaction may be achived.
It's not the mixing of alcohol and caffeine that seems to be the big problem but the amounts in one container that are being addressed. 12% alcohol in 22.5 oz with that much caffeine is really going to kick hard when it sets in.
Think about your average young person (in this case, between 13-25). One can of this is different than mixing your own caffeinated beverage and alcohol because you know how much of each is in there. Most of the people consuming these drinks can't tell on taste alone how strong it is because it's flavored.
The can alone turned me off, much less the thought of 5-6 beers worth of alcohol packed into an energy drink. I've seen enough people overuse both to last a lifetime.
It's more like 4 beers, unless you happen to drink beers that are 2% alcohol. It's also in a big-ass can (should tell you something).
It's a little less than 2 1/2 times as strong as Budweiser and a little weaker than your average red wine. There are tons of microbrews out there that are about the same in alcohol content.
here we go again, another misrepresentation of the facts. this stuf is NOT the equivilent of 5 beers it is the same as two 16 oz cans of any "ice" beer (5.9 each)the main problem is the seeming need of young idiots to use these to play drinking games (ie chug one of these real fast and see what happens) the problem isnt with the drink, its with the drinker !!!!
Your both wrong. Light beer is about 4.2% alcohol no matter what the can size is. Four Loco has up to 12% alcohol so it is way more than an average beer especially considering the size of the can of four loco and young kids propensity to "down" drinks.
...so should they ban Rum and Cokes? Jack and Cokes? All mixed drinks? This is absurd. Thank the gods we have ignorant people who are elected by a majority of ignorant people to decide what is best for us so that we don't have to.
Again, they are only taking aim at premised drinks because a lot of people don't realize how much caffeine and alcohol they are getting at once. If you have a problem with this approach, then deal with the actual facts instead of positing false situations to complain about.
literfairy, since when did people stop reading the labels on the products they consume? I thought that was the point of having labels, to let you know what you are putting in your body. If someone is to stupid to read the label and "realize" what they are drinking then maybe they just shouldnt drink. I love Four Loko because it gives me a buz without having to drink or spend to much. I think the real problem here is people not taking responsibility for their actions. When I got in troouble for drinking while in high school it wasnt the vodka company's fault. It was mine and the person who supplied me with it.
Due to the sad shape of our school system, our kids can no longer read warning labels. They need to put graphic pictures of drunken idiots and brain dead alcoholics on the cans to get the point across.
The illnesses reported with this product should tell people that when you put caffeine, guarana and taurine together with alcohol, you end up with problems.
Why does the manufacturer feel the need to use all these together? How jacked up do you want your drunks? Guess it keeps them awake behind the wheel.
I'll do it, I'll begin this evening. For the next two weeks I'll consume nothing but Four Loco drinks. If I don't get back to you all after that, assume that its not a good combination.
As long as I can still have my shots of Thimerisol/Squalene laced H1N1/Flu vaccines/vaccinations in general, fluoride in my water, mercury based compound laced food from what they use to clean the vats that process High Fructose Corn Syrup (everything not diet has it), and for everything not diet, Aspartame, a bi-product of E coli (essentially, the waste, or poop of E coli), I'll be happy!
FDA, doing a great job allowing your fellow Americans give themselves brain damage every day through all foods they consume, liquids they drink, the poisons you inject us will, and of course, I didn't even touch the Genetic Modified Foods that have no long term studies..... no wonder why Cancer is so rampant in our society.. hmmmm.
FDA/Government only care about their lobbyists, the ones that have billions of dollars to tax and put in their pockets at campaign time!
The young ones (teans and early 20's) are the ones that concern me the most. However our whole society is eroded by the abuse of alcohol and drugs. Families are torn apart, jobs lost, crime committed, etc.
As for these persons who say let me choose what is best for me like Navy Nick - we would, if you knew what was best for you. Anyway, it's not all about you.
It isn't the combination of ingredients! It's the rate and abuse of these type of products by these freaks who want to get a buzz as fast as they can get the container open!
Phusion Products is right! For years people have been mixing red bull and other such energy drinks with alcohol. Now all of a sudden the Feds want a nationwide ban because a few people couldn't drink their product responsibly. It's ludicrous! And besides long after this has passed, college students will still be doing just that. Come on! Find something better to waste my money on besides something as stupid as this! Don't blame the drink, BLAME THE DRINKER!!!!
Just what I need, the Federal Government to protect me from ME.

Rage:
Freedom of choice, freedom to choose..
Your link exposes you, Rage-whatever.
Jeff
"Buzz Beer" from The Drew Cary (?) show. Life imatates art.
OH NO!! I love Four Loko... should be a personal decision whether or not to drink it. The government has too much to say about what I can or can't put in my body!!! Ummmm, lol that didn't sound right, did it? :)
You can always order a mixed drink made by a bartender that has both caffeine and alcohol.
Yeah for like 10 bucks.
Kimber,
It kinda of sounds as if you might not be too discriminating about whats goes into your body in any case. Oh, I guess that did not sound right either. (-;
I like these drinks, but I knew this was coming. I mean the combination of caffeine and alcohol just can't be good for you:)
Will rum and coke, Irish coffee, and Russian coffee also be banned? This is just silly.
Especially with the young adults they target this drink to.
hockey mom-I agree with you up to where you think the makers didn't realize the consequences...they knew. It was their plan
I guess you won't be able to get a toy with your Four Loco either.
ivandrz - HELL NO it wasn't the drink...It was the driver.
I really hope you are joking. You can pry my coffee from my cold, dead, shaky hands.
My advise, don't drink, porcelain goddess.
I don't- jerk
Only someone who has never been through the pain equivalent of a car accident and not be able to stop it could come up with that heap of garbage, "GunnyC#$P!"
Oh, my Bad. 3 shots, one in the leg, two in the pelvic. I can just imagine how much you hurt while I spent 20 years protecting your freedom of speech. Oh, and by the way, I wrecked my truck 4 times since then, had a life-flight heart-attack that damn near killed me. I hope you are not suffering too bad for your service to OUR country.
By the way, I see most of your post are related to weight loss. Got an issue with that? Binging is not the answer.
Miskaffon, this is what you said in your first post. It is the second half, which goes way past removing caffine from alcoholic beverages.
I'll have a red bull with a double shot of grey goose. Thank you very much.
Yes, that's a stroke of genius. Ban caffeine, because you can't handle it. Even though millions of other people have no issue with it. But you don't like it, so it should be banned. People like you are what makes life miserable.
While we're at it we should ban the bees since I am allergic.
Miskaffon -
I am allergic to caffeine.
Sounds like Gunny and Mis have not had their morning coffee/shot yet.
Mis,
There are no studies that show that if you drinks caffine and alcohol together that it is any more harmful than if you drink them seperately.
I've always said, there is nothing worse than a wide awake drunk.
And there's not much more irritating a person than a crank online. (see post above if you have any questions)
Go somewhere and puke, loser. I'm sure you have enough boyfriends or girlfriends that would be happy to oblige you.
You were probably texting, stoned, or drunk. Any local news ads we can reference? And just to be nice, maybe they were.
What???!!!!!!!!!!
1) Puke: not unless I have CAFFEINE!!! (or some sort of stomach virus)
2) I don't drink alcohol; maybe 3 oz max per year if that, sharing a tiny glass of wine with my husband.
4) NEVER been "stoned"
5) Have no idea how you got that idea from my post about being sensitive to CAFFEINE....
Wow.
Peace?
"Our country is at the crossroads". How true!
(you posted above before I was done writing this)
You two need to give each other a hug.
Kumbaya...Kumbaya...Kumbaya
I am so glad the FDA and the FTC stepped forward and told them how angry they are. They should write a letter too.
Does this mean no more Irish Coffee?
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
(And to think, I thought I had no skin in this issue, as uninterested as I am with -regular- Redbull.)
It just means no premixed Irish coffee.
Hey, I wanna see Coccaine back in Coca-Cola. I think its false advertising without it.
Since you can't drink until 21, it's really hard for parents to teach their children how to drink appropriately.
Agreed.
Its called leading by example.
So then why can't they ban cigarettes as well? Oh yeah... I forgot... there is too much money involved. This is all BS!!!!
I heard a comedian talk about coffee drinks once.
"Drunk as a skunk and wide awake to enjoy it.
Horribly sick with no hope of passing out."
Ah, good times!
Yeah, instead of walking into wall you run into them.
Last week when this story surfaced I discussed it with a nephew who is a bartender in Chicago. He responded that Red Bull and Vodka has been a very popular mixed drink for some time now. And the Four Loko didnt seem to sound much different. So it seems the threat was, and is still, out there.
It's worse. One Four Loko is the equivalent of 6 beers and 12 oz. of coffee.
In my area it has been suggested that Four Loko produces angry or violent people.
Just wait and see how angry and violent they get when they can't buy it anymore.
Another knee jerk reaction trying to prevent what is unpreventable.
Don't people that understand Prohibition does not work? Is the FDA going to regulate REd Bull and Vodka? Rum and Coke? Irish Coffee?
They only want to ban premixed caffeinated alcoholic drinks.
You have to admit, it won't hurt the companies that make and sell these drinks. They'll just market caffeine drinks and alcohol drinks separately, then give instructions on the proper way to mix them. This way they can make more money by selling more of their products.
SLAP THE PISS OUTTA THE IDIOTS YOU KNOW
may not help but a high level of satifaction may be achived.
alias, if you can't say it concisely (as in with one or two paragraphs) then get off the internet, babbler!
I stopped reading after your homophobic crap up at the top, and I resented having to scroll through your drivel. Shut the F up, DA!
literfairy, what possible difference does it make whether they ban premixed or non-premixed drinks?
Rednail, how is the truth homophobic peterpuff? and as most of the stupidity goes on a rampage, DA's like you ignore facts and wont shut the F up. .
Drama queens shouldn't be journalists.
here we go again, another misrepresentation of the facts. this stuf is NOT the equivilent of 5 beers it is the same as two 16 oz cans of any "ice" beer (5.9 each)the main problem is the seeming need of young idiots to use these to play drinking games (ie chug one of these real fast and see what happens) the problem isnt with the drink, its with the drinker !!!!
What about Lynchberg Lemonades, or wine coolers, or even the tequila/beer premix called Tequiza?
Maybe I should slock up on Captain and Coke before it's banned.
literfairy, since when did people stop reading the labels on the products they consume?

Have they done any studies of caffiene or related ingredients and alcohol when they mix together?
So true. The FDA (Federal Demented Assess) is so screwed, it might be safer to do the opposite of what they reccomend!
So much for yaggerbombs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, it's not all about you.
you mean "teens", as in teenagers, right?
It isn't the combination of ingredients! It's the rate and abuse of these type of products by these freaks who want to get a buzz as fast as they can get the container open!
If these "freaks" as you label them want a buzz off of "these products", what makes you think they won't find other non-banned products?
Save Four Loko R.I.P
Phusion Products is right! For years people have been mixing red bull and other such energy drinks with alcohol. Now all of a sudden the Feds want a nationwide ban because a few people couldn't drink their product responsibly. It's ludicrous! And besides long after this has passed, college students will still be doing just that. Come on! Find something better to waste my money on besides something as stupid as this! Don't blame the drink, BLAME THE DRINKER!!!!
