You stole the words right out of my mouth! Mixing stimulants (e.g caffeine or amphetamines) with depressants (e.g. alcohol or barbiturates) is what drug addicts refer to as "speed balling". I think I learned that from reading "Last Exit to Brooklyn" when I was in high school. In case you're too young to know it, "Last Exit to Brooklyn" is an old 1960's novel filled with sex, drugs, violence and every sort of depravity imaginable. It was fascinating reading for a high school student back then!
Oh sure, blame it on the caffeine and not the 24oz., 12% alcohol content that costs $2.50
So a college student can get the alcohol content of 5 beers for only $2.50 and it tastes like fruit punch to boot. I'm shocked, shocked I tell you that people go the to hospital on this stuff with alcohol poisoning...
But sure, it's the caffeine thats the problem...
(these drinks suck anyway, I don't know why anyone would drink them. But then again, college student, $2.50, 5 beers worth of alcohol... the math adds up)
It is the caffeine and other energy additives that are the problem. Caffeine is a stimulant that counters alcohol's depressive nature. Drink 5 beers (or whatever you can't tolerate) and pass out. Drink 5 beers with the caffeine of 3 cups of coffee and additional stimulant supplements and feel no negative affect (the alcohol acting as a depressant) and you can drink even more. Passing out then vomiting are the body's way of telling you that you're poisoning yourself. If you don't pass out because you are wired on caffeine you're countering the body's response to alcohol poisoning.
Add it's kool-aid flavors and you have bad news.

This is another social control by the government. A handful of people don't know their own bodies so we all get screwed.
This isn't going to stop bars from selling Redbull and Vodka. Four Loko is dangerous. I remember when I was young chugging 40oz of OE, and blacking out half of the night....With this crap you can do it in 20oz, and this crap tasts like juice instead of piss.
DENTON, Texas — News 8 has learned that a controversial alcoholic energy drink may have played a part in a wreck that killed an Arlington teenager.
Investigators said three teenagers were running away to Oklahoma in a stolen sport utility vehicle when they crashed along I-35W in Denton early Sunday morning.
Valeria Rodriguez, 14, was killed when she was thrown from the wreckage of the Chevrolet Trailblazer. She was not wearing a seat belt, investigators said.
Her 14-year-old boyfriend is charged with intoxicated manslaughter. Investigators tell News 8 one of the two boys in the car with her admitted drinking Four Loko that night.
One can of Four Loko has as much alcohol as about five beers, and it is marketed to youth.
Four states already ban the product. The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission tells News 8 it is considering what it can do — if anything.
The TABC says it is uncertain if it even has the authority to ban the controversial drink, or whether that's something the legislature would have to consider.
Roughly a million people a year are hospitalized with side effects to prescription medication. They go after this. All they did was make it a two step process for the kids now, first buy the alcohol and drinks seperately, then combine.
As a liberal I would be expected to agree with this kind of legislation. I don't. Restricting the choices for some consumers do not seem fair expecially when Kaluha(sic?) and Bailey's have been around for quite a few years.

This is such a joke. The FDA is basically saying that certain kinds of alcohol are extremely dangerous....but the (minimum of) 40,000 people who die every year from alcohol related automobile accidents are somehow managing to only drink the safe alcohol.
While there is little known medical evidence that the drinks are less safe than other alcoholic drinks, public health advocates say they can make people feel more alert and able to handle risky tasks like driving.
I have found this to be true to an extent for myself. Even just having alcohol, then an hour or so later having energy drinks does cause a slightly sober feeling in myself.
I understand i'm not really sober, but I definately feel it.
Combine that with youth, and other chemicals kids might be taking... and it probably is a good idea to just not have a drink that comes with it in the first place.
This isn't going to stop people from combining the two themselves... but it doesn't make it very easy.
My point was that the problem is the alcohol, not the fact that these drinks have caffeine in them.
The companies who make these drinks obviously aren't giving our elected officials the monetary equivalent of a 'hand job' via some kind of lobby group and donations, otherwise their drinks wouldn't even be on the radar.
I dunno,...it's pretty easy to go to just about any convenience store in the country and have a plethora of energy drinks to choose from and then combine them with alcohol on your own. I guess that's why this whole issue seems rather unimportant even if the levels of caffeine & sugar in these energy drinks are absurdly high.
Sono: Very good point. Why don't they just ban caffeine since that's the "dangerous" chemical that's finding its way into my alcohol....yeah that sounds smart. This is simply doing what the government always does - divide and conquer. Make slow, methodical cuts, and over time you get fully what you want.
Do I advocate binge drinking? No. Did I do it myself 20 years ago? Sure. Do I champion the cause of people who market this stuff. Not really? Use agents to Force them out of business on my behalf? No.
The last time I checked there was already a 21 year old drinking age for people, so how did these 14 year olds get it? If they can get this stuff, they can get 80 proof hard stuff, too, and mix it with Hawaiin Punch - that's what we did in high school; I got pants pissing drunk on wop - what is the difference?
But then again, what's not to like? You get a cheap sensation of "doing something about it", grab some headlines, and all you have to do is put some people out of business.

Hey kids, pop a caffeine pill and you can drink whatever you want, not just cans of fruity alcoholic beverages. It's not news folks. It isn't just a perception that you can function better with caffeine and alcohol than on alcohol alone, it's a fact!
Frankly, I would rather all the drunks pop a caffeine pill and drive home safer. The alternative is what we have now, alcohol fueled drivers killing people nightly.

You can drive better on caffeine and alcohol, much better. Don't believe me, try it yourself. Here's a bonus, if you take a caffeine pill first you can actually hold a conversation without slurring your speech. I'll take an articulate drunk over a sloppy one anyday.

Red Bull , Ded Fuel, Loco whatever are all liquid crack! These drinks are all chemicals and sugar. Most have enzimes to rush the caffeen & booze to your system. They are a cheep high and not at all healthy. They all should have been ban a long time ago.
One thier thing, I was in the business and the energy drinks cost the same to make as regular cola. Imagin that! The soft drink companies are really rippen you dopes off big time!
Personally I haven't tried Loco, or Ded fuel, whatever that is. I do drink Red Bull, which does not have any booze in it. Yes I'm sure it's the same cost to make as a reg soda however Red Bull keeps me awake better and after a very long day at work, it's one of the few things that helps me keep my eyes open on the road. As far as it being a high? I have never experienced this 'high' occurring with Red Bull, so if you have, what else where you drinking?

They did not have these "energy" drinks back in the old days when I was in college, but I used to eat NoDoze tablets like candy when I was up late cramming for an exam or trying to get a term paper finished at the last minute. NoDoze is pure caffeine and didn't require a prescription. It caused me heart palpitations, though, if I took too much!
I recall a while ago trying an 'energy pill' that was more like a mint, I didn't much like the side effects, I was jittery and felt my heart going out of sync as well. Never have I experienced that with Red Bull though. Or even that Monster energy drink.
Time to ban books of matches cos those kids keep lighting their pajamas on fire.

So the FDA's ban umtimately forces the manufacturer to remove the caffine to maitain sales then in all fairness across the legal board they should ban cigarettes and force them to remove all harmful and addictive chemicals.

Deaths from smoking occur because of years of the behavior. And even though only a "handful" of cases have been reported, many, many more people have been sickened by these drinks. If you think its irresponsible to drink 4 drinks in an hour, then drinking just 1 of these drinks is irresponsible. That is how much alcohol is in them.
I do wonder about the constitutionality of this decision and if the manufacturers of this crap want to fight it, then I think they have a case. In the meantime I will sleep a little better knowing the "over indulgent" college kids that I work everyday aren't drinking these anymore.

Nice to see our tax dollars at work doing absolutely nothing useful. What's next? Ban Irish Coffee? And there is an important statistic missing here, regarding hospitalized college students. How many were hospitalized in the same period for drinking beer or hard liquor (without caffeine)? What we really need to do is ban stupidity, but then there would only be a handful of people left in the country.
These Particular drinks were just popular amongst colleges. There is still Joose and a few others. The real problem is that these things are strong and with their flavors they are easy to drink. You have kids that have no heavy drinking experience that are downing these like they were twelve ounce beers. Your bound to end up with alcohol poisining when you drink like that. On top of that if someone is a little caffeine sensitive (as I am) they will feel quite sick in short order faster than the alcohol can act on them then that hits as well and they cannot just pass out and sleep it off because they are to jacked up from all the caffeine then (be glad they cannot just pass out) the alchohol intensifies to the point of poisoning. Removing the caffeine and still allowing high-strength alcohol that goes down like coolaid (and looks like it) may result in the death of inexperienced drinkers from alchohol poisining. The caffeine may have added to these kids getting sick but it probably saved their lives from alcohol poisining as well by keeping them from going completely unconcious untill the alcohol wore off or they died.
If you are going to ban this, then you better ban all the energy drinks...double standard AGAIN
When will they do the right thing and ban all alcohol products. It would protect more kids from their loser alcoholic parents. And yes, If you drink a you are a loser and most likely your kids will grow up to be a loser just like you. I know we tried it once and it didn't work, all the loser alcoholic losers had a sissy fit when they couldn't get drunk it's time for all Americans to grow up. I feel the same way about smokers.

Um....I drink. I also have a job, pay my bills on time, have lots of friends that can rely on me for help (currently housing two friends of mine while they save up for an apartment) I am married to the same guy that I've been with for 12 years, have adopted animals from shelters, and donated money to local charities as well as assist at the YMCA. But because from time to time I have a drink or three that still makes me a loser? Perfect? I am not, most definitely, but loser? I don't think so, but then I suppose if I'm doing this well as a 'loser' it's better then being an intolerant 'winner' like you, huh?
Most people that drink, drink and drive at some time or another. Do you? If you had children I guess it would be ok for them to have a few drinks reguardless of their age since their is nothong wrong with that since you are doing so well with it.
Actually I made it a very strict habit of never drinking a day that I'm going to drive. The legal alcohol age is 21, so any children I have will not drink until then and before then they will know there are limitations and what is acceptable and what is not. Are you suggesting that you will allow your children to do so since you 'guess' it'd be ok? Anything else?

Do you drink in front of your kids? That would make you the biggest loser of all. I am sorry you can't deal with life without feeling the need to drink. I feel sorry for your kids, if you do love them you really should take some stock in what I say before it's to late. I have an occasional glass of wine OMG SAY IT ISNT SO..in front of my step children (ages 17 and 14) do you not think that regardless of what I choose, as an adult, to drink in front of them, that they are surrounded by their peers who drink every weekend and god knows what else? They see that I am responsible and don't get falling down drunk in front of them. They see that it's ok to enjoy it in moderation. It is their peers that set the negative standard in my opinion.

It makes me laugh. It really does. This whole country has been spending the last decade spitting on smokers. Anyone who smokes is a disgusting person out to commit slow suicide. Meanwhile, while the attack on smokers continues, someone can go to a store and for $2 get wasted off of alcohol and caffeine, drive drunk and kill someone.
When was the last time you heard of a family being torn apart because of cigarettes? When was the last time someone was arrested for driving under the influence of tobacco? When was the last time someone smoked a cigarette and became so intoxicated that they got into their car, got into an accident, and killed someone? When was the last time you heard of someone getting so wasted off of a pack of cigarettes that they beat their wives, and children?
When was the last time you have heard about you state and this country spending BILLIONS every year treating people addicted to cigarettes? You haven't heard of any of these things, because they don't exist like they do for alcohol. Yet, despite alcohol clearly being the more dangerous product on the market, we treat it like it is perfectly normal to drink, and demonize anyone who smokes.
