Regarding the earlier statement, allowing 'ignorance to fend for itself' - we first need to ascertain if we knowingly remained ignorant of the vast scope of the cholera outbreak by turning our backs on millions of Haitians. So, now that the Haitians are reporting to be rioting when more than 1,000 Haitians have died and 17,000 more are ill, their action is hampering efforts?
They could have just laid their and died--thus, I would like to see it on the evening news not knowing if this recent story on their rioting is an urban legend The sheer scope of this tragedy will not be seen for the next 6 months to a year and perhaps even longer, as hundreds of thousands more will become infected by this illness and perish if aid does not arrive.
I've read snippets of the UN calling for nations to stand up to be counted and heed the call to follow up on the pledges they made following the earthquake in January of this year. I'm surprised that the US news media is selective in what they report on Haiti with their 'spotty' reporting and have learned more by going to CBC/Canada, The Guardian, and our PBS station, NPR.
It should not matter if the US media and government are avoiding reporting on this issue because Americans are over-whelmed or have had their share of morose news elsewhere on the planet. We will never live in such dire or destitute misery as the Haitians are currently experiencing---we all need to reflect how fortunate we are in spite of our specific circumstance or situation.
I pray that some giant relief effort will occur before thousands more perish.
What a bunch of low life loosers. The Local police or the UN troops should be prepared to start with tear gas and move to live ammo to stop this crap in it's tracks. These folks have been lawless for years and the local governmant has been toothless in fighting the high rate of crime. That does not mean that the UN needs to play by the same rules!
THIS is why there isnt an out pouring of support for Haiti like with the Tsunami and hurricanes. The people of this country are simply acting like savages. I did donate some money initially, i regret it now. Act like human beings, its a bad situation, noone is arguing that, but dont bite the hand that feeds you. If they want to act like this, let em rot.
Well if they're protesting the people trying to help them then I say it's time for the U.N. and anyone else that's come to the nation to try and help to pack up and leave. You just don't attack people that are trying to help you, even if you think they're not doing enough. The world has plenty of other people that need help, people that won't attack the people trying to help them, so I say go there and let these ignorant people deal with this them selves.
President Clinton and President Bush need to make this a priority, and address
this situation. I would like to know where all the billions of dollars is and what the status of any new hospitals being built, since most of the people are still in tents, it
appears the money isn't being used to re-build homes.
Former President Bill Clinton is the rep/envoy to Haiti. More news is available on the distribution of $$$, or the lack thereof. Apparently the US continues to sit on the $1.5 BILLION contributed to the Haitian Relief effort.

Here is a snippet from the article: Most notably absent is the United States, which has yet to deliver any of its promised of $1.15 billion.
I've noted some of the more horrendous posts about the lawlessness of the Haitians. I know how I would react if I lost someone I cared about---it is all about them being punctuated by fear and loss and death. It has been a hellish year for the Haitian people and we're almost at "eleven months and counting" since the earthquake.
Who will answer the call now or do we go about our business and allow scores more to perish?
The inability of Haiti to absorb the aid is the problem. The country has a long history of getting billions in aid and showing very little to improve the average citizen's life. It is and has been the most corrupt country in the hemisphere. Hopefully the US and UN have learned that simply throwing money at the problems won't make them go away. The Haitian government is incapable of using the funds, so the US and UN need to make the plans to restart the economy and rebuild the infrastructure. And yes Noelle... many more will perish before clean water and proper sewage is available. There is no quick fix.
And they looted 500 tons of food and then burned the building down? What are they going to do with all that food sell it on the black market now? This story is just getting worse and worse by the day. I cant believe with all the help they are getting and being told repeatedly how to decontaminate water and food yet they are not listening. This is so frustrating! They only blame themselves now for all that parish due to this epidemic.
When some of the first money got to Haiti, the government there used it to buy land to build the tent cities. Homes were supposed to follow.
But, OOPS! The land, negotiated for by an official who was also a prominent member of the board of directors who owned the land, turns out to be on a flood plain. Can't build homes on a flood plain.
Haiti was a dump long before the earthquake...It's been deforested; You can forget about any large-scale agriculture ever flourishing there. Saying that it is corrupt is an understatement, and the people are absolutely inept and ignorant beyond belief...More money? Won't make a damn bit of difference...even the money they received immediately after the earthquake from a sympathetic world has gone...where? Nothing, absolutely nothing can save Haiti from the Abyss. The best thing to do is to evacuate the people to their Mother-Continent and let the Dominican Republic annex it. They seem to have better management skills and common sense than the Haitians could ever hope to possess. That would be the most humane thing to do. OR we can wait another 5-10 years and watch as they slaughter eachother and die of disease...Are there any other ideas that aren't idealistic and instead rest upon harsh reality?
Why do you think any country in Africa would be happy to see a bunch of uneducated, inept and corrupt black folks? Africa itself is a basket case and their misery seems to worsen each year.
I understand from some missionairies in Northern Haiti that the rioting, is, in fact BECAUSE the UN has decided they can no longer adequately treat the outbreak and they are now placing limitations on treatment and are content to just deal with the aftermath ... therefore, the rioting has begun.
Interesting to me that MSNBC did not bring this to light ... and yes, I do tend to lean toward believing the word of mouth from the missionaries. They have nothing to lose ... and are there to only help.
By the way, Stephanie, treating the outbreak is most successfully done by treating the water supply. When the rioting started, the teams treating the water had to be recalled because of the danger to them.
Planes bringing in more personnel and medical supplies had to be cancelled because of the danger to them.
Medical personnel being trained in what to look for and how to treat the cholera patients had to stop their training because of the danger to them.
And please explain to me how attacking a hospital in order to destroy it can help anyone at all?
Haiti unrest hampers desperate fight against cholera
If they don't want the help then walk away from it and let them deal with it on their own. Once all the troublemakers die off then go back and help those that are left that want the help. Problem solved. NEXT!!!
It's too bad this $hithole of a country didn't get completely swallowed by the quake. This is a lost cause people!! Everyone who's trying to help these people is wasting their time.
Okay, so they are getting help and then riot? How stupid are these people? You know what. Don't give them help and let them riot anyway. They will probably kill everyone. then erect a memorial of false gold that read.
They should pull out all of the UN soldiers there and send in North Korean soldiers. They know how to quickly install a little control and order in this mess.
I have been watching this situation closely.
This is one of those times when you just have to back off and let ignorance fend for itself.

Noelle -
Why? Maybe you didn't catch on that they were being treated and THEN rioted. They didn't riot because they were not being treated.
How the hell do you know what each and every person in America is experiencing? What arrogance you've exhibited.
If they dont want our help, pull the hell out! We have many more, worth while, uses for all that money here in the USA
What a bunch of low life loosers. The Local police or the UN troops should be prepared to start with tear gas and move to live ammo to stop this crap in it's tracks. Fine!! Pull all aid out and let the protesters solve the Cholera crisis by themselves!!!
. After everyone is dead, go back in, clean up, elect a non corrupt government, and make it the 51tst state. HAHAHA
Stupid is as stupid does

Yes...but they'd be together!
Leave it to the liberal media to skew the facts.
Did you personally talk to the missionaries or is there some link where they have made statements to news sources?
By the way, Stephanie, treating the outbreak is most successfully done by treating the water supply. When the rioting started, the teams treating the water had to be recalled because of the danger to them.

What compassion!
We should pull out and let nature take it's course.
An "unrest" is people talking, whispering, grumbling about the state of things.
This is a RIOT and needs to be called so.
Okay, so they are getting help and then riot? How stupid are these people? You know what. Don't give them help and let them riot anyway. They will probably kill everyone. then erect a memorial of false gold that read.
"Ignorance will shine in history"
They should pull out all of the UN soldiers there and send in North Korean soldiers. They know how to quickly install a little control and order in this mess.
And yet, they'll blame the U.S. and deand our dollars at the same time.
