Tables exist for blood alcohol levels for different body weights, but they are largely ignored in this age of indistinguishable sexes. Men have about 15% more blood. When a man drinks five, the woman can drink four. Good times.
@Jack - the reason that there are alcoholics is because they can't drink in moderation. Their bodies metabolize alcohol differently than those who are not alcoholics. The comment you made about the study is regarding social behavior not physiological effects.
I have known this stuff for years. My mom was an addictions counselor, so I was hearing about this in the 90's. Alcohol is the worst in terms of abuse. It will destroy every part of your life, physical, mental, social.
If it isn't controlled properly, alcohol can be devastating for both men and women. However there are a few tricks that we ladies can use, if we decide to do some drinking (this is what I try to do, anyway): 1. Drink plenty of water (nothing else, just water) both before and after you drink. It's important to be hydrated before you drink and then after, to help your body get rid of the toxins. 2. Make sure you get your sleep. If you're going to be out late one night drinking, make sure you set some extra sleep time aside during the week, to make up for the time your body loses resting. 3. Try to keep your diet as healthy as possible. Fresh fruits and vegetables are loaded with water and vitamins, to offset some of the unpleasant side effects caused by alcohol. 4. Know your limits. If you can only do 5 beers in one night, don't go for those other two because your body will reject it (in other words, you'll be throwing up an hour later). In moderation, with plenty of water, rest and a good diet I think alcohol is doable... but it helps to plan ahead a little to help the body minimize the absorption of the toxins.
I could comment as a man about "holding my liquor" but i digress and wont...
Another rehash of many decades (and possibly possibly milliniums) old debate. Men and women are different.

It seems every study rated to alcoholism is different. I remember one study that suggested if you have ever drank alone you are a alcoholic.
Straight from the Mayo Clinic (It is not clear why patients develop IBS)
Like with all things, do it in "moderation"
Jack in OH,
"Like with all things, do it in "moderation""
The problem is that alcoholics are incapable of drinking in moderation. That's why the only solution for them is total abstinence.
You've come a long way, baby! First smoking; now, alcoholism!
"Holding their liquor makes women much sicker than men"
NIAAA and tax payer money (grants) used to uncover the obvious.

Oh crud! Just when I was actually starting to believe women and men were alike in every way except the one that really counts.
Captain Obvious...paging Captian Obvious.
WTF is up with MSNBC lately and their stupid articles?
In tomorrows edition: "Running with scissors can be bad for your health."
Bottoms up ladies!

Yet another reason that men are superior to women.
