My cholesterol level is 197(within normal range). My Dr. Wants me to take 80mg of Zocor daily. I have muscular dystrophy. Zocor can cause muscle weakness and pain in the joints. After reading about statins in the PDR, I will not take the prescribed doseage. I have an appointment to discuss this with him. I know he has my best interest in mind, however, I do not agree with him about this. My advice is to ALWAYS LOOK UP A PRESCRIBED MEDICATION IN THE PDR. Your Dr. cannot possibly know about every side effect of every medication on the market.
Judi - that's rather preposterous unless you have some other risk factor. Your number is perfectly acceptable. Are you ambulatory? I'm sure your Dr. will understand your reluctance to take Zocor or ANY statin and 80mg. is a rather high dose. Is there something else pertinent in your condition? Is your Dr. right out of Med school? These trends change every few years and in accordance with many retrospective studies. IF you are otherwise at risk for an MI (or have already HAD an MI?) is the ONLY reason I can think of for such a recommendation. But again - these threads are not subsitutes for your personal visit with your physician? good luck (PS - do you have hideously high triglycerides? THAT would place a person at risk for pancreatitis. MD is often a DZ of males. Did you mean to say muscular sclerosis by any chance?
