I would like to point out that there were mutiple cases of MS in Nurses at the Key West Hospital, which is down the road from our dump. After all types of doctors studied the situation, they said the dump was not causing the MS. But, since the dump has been closed, no new cases have happened. I think this is the same. There is something there, but the scientists don't know what they are looking for, or overlooking something they think is not toxic but is. If they can, the people should move.
Hmmmmm... There's something to be said for a government that protects itself and the corporations which contribute to its campaign funds and fails to protect the very people it was formed to represent. Remarkably, while medical records were reviewed, and mothers were interviewed, and samples were taken from the air, soil and water in the community and at the nearby dump, no test results were disclosed in this report. Instead, a dump spokesperson notes how pleased they (dump officials, I presume) are with the results of those tests.
Having been involved in similar battles against government and big corporations, I can say the EPA is not the protection to civilians it was designed to be. In fact, personnel at the EPA will be the first to tell you they are insufficiently staffed to physically maintain monitors on all the sites they are currently monitoring - let alone investigate reports where such a small number of birth defects are involved.
And local governments are usually indebted or beholden to the big corporations which are at the root of such contamination, and their votes for "progress" (interpret as expanded freedoms to contaminate & destroy) are nearly always in favor of those entities who line their pockets.
When there is a significantly high incident of birth defects, cancers, and other illnesses related to exposure to contaminants, it is never without cause. And when several of those birth defects are of the same nature, it is almost certainly caused by a single common factor. The people of this community need to obtain the test results upon which the government has formulated this report. They also need to secure samples of their own and have them tested by an independent laboratory - preferrably one without knowledge of the origin of those samples or a bias toward any corporation or government agency involved in this situation.
