So, what is the solution. Are the leaders of Haiti doing everything they can, or just everything they want to do. We can provide them with fresh water and medicine. Sounds to me like they need dry land. Suppose any surrounding countries would take them in. I doubt it. The end result is terrible. This is stopping over population via attrition, disease and natural disasters. Apparently everything being done is not enough.
Their Government is about as trustworthy as a Mexican Drug Lord or less, the population finds enough energy to have Violent Protest, but are way to LAZY to clean up their own camps. I cannot believe that One Million people that are in the camps cannot make a serious dent in the disaster clean-up after nearly an entire year. If they will not help themselves, why should we?
Maybe this is God's way of thinning the herd. He works in mysterious ways. If these people will not help themselves then what can be done for them. They won't let centers be set up to help them so what will they do with chlorine tablets.
I've gone hiking in woods all over the Country for weeks at a time and when we had to get water we put 6 drops of clorox in every gallon so we wouldn't get sick from it. So how basic is this to stop the problem?

Didn't you hear, name less, Unemployment has stabilized. See, how it works is, First you are unemployed, second your benefits run-out. Third, you are no longer consider unemployed - instead you are "Not Employed". People are moving fast enough from Unemployed to Not Employedto make the room for all the Unemployed to Stabilize the Unemployment Rate. See, they want to destroy the Middle Class so that even the people with 4 year college degree's will only be able to afford to live in an small Apartment (As renters) and have to ride the bus to work. The Fed and the ELITES (This group includes both Democrat and Republican Politicians) as the Super-Rich tries to ensalve the U.S. Population.

can't some big companies like john deere and some others donate some big earth moving equipment to Haiti to clean that place up? Some could donate pipes, septic tanks, etc. What about the shed companies. some of those are big enough and have windows to house a family - what about going green on electric.
Why not make Haiti a green country
from scratch. Some companies with giant profits off shore should be stepping up to the plate.
Government officials need to step up and take charge by employing their own people in the clean up and reconstruction of their country. The world gave them lots of monies after the earthquake so they need to start using it appropriately. The poor people must have free medical care at all times including clean homes. And lastly nobody should be allowed to leave Haiti without a Dr.'s ok.

I agree. What would happen if Haiti prevented US citizens from leaving? One case has been reported in Florida. The last I heard, one case had been reported in the Dominican Republic. Both came from Haiti.
If the republicans gave the money promised to Haiti as promised, it's possible that this situation would not have been as severe. It's possible it could have been avoided. Tax cuts for the billionaires and tanning salons are more important than that of the people of the United States and other countries we help. Has anyone noticed how white John Boner is lately? He's too cheap to spend an extra dollar a day at the tanning salon.

The republicans didn't seem to have a problem borrowing a trillion from China to attack Afghanistan, illegally attack Iraq and give the richest 2% of the US citizens a tax break (which still hasn't trickled down). I'm not in that 2% bracket and I doubt that you are.

Having read enough history of the Raj, it probably can spread even faster yet. As more people get sick, the water contamination increases exponentially and the resources necessary to disinfect and decontaminate get wiped out. Sounds like they need to do some more rioting to completely shut off all ability to bring in supplies.
Personally, if we could suck the contaminated water up in aerial tankers, we could decontaminate it by dropping it on North Korea about now, military installations and presidential palaces preferred. There are more deserving people on this planet.

Cholera isn't necessarily fatal unless the victim is in poor health or can't be hydrated so their own defenses can help fight it off. During the el torr epidemic in the middle east in the 60's the vaccine from the oustide wasn't as efficasious as the vaccine made from that particular strain. Before that, el torr was considered a mild form of cholera, however this strain killed people in droves. We were quarantined until winter came and the cases dropped off. To travel one had to go through a course of Chloramphenicol. I can understand how those people feel. When you see the dead being hauled away in a truck to be buried in a common grave tensions really go up. Good hygene helps but the victims vomit and have diarhea until they become dehydrated and unless rehydrated the prognnosis is bleak...If enough people are sick eventually the bacteria will spread from the vomit and diarhea to the nearby area surfaces. So don't ever make light of something like this and I know for sure that anyone who has experienced something like this would never make light of it.

Haiti is the most impoverished nation in the western hemisphere. Little of the promised billions have ever made to the island. There is no “government”, except for the aid agencies like PIH and MSF, there is NO infrastructure, no industry (except the aid industry) few are educated to basic things like hygiene. There is NO clean drinking water, bottled water just won’t do it, they need a clean drinking water source.
It’s a post apocalyptic wasteland, dangerous, violent, buried in waste and debris, the rivers and streams are choked with trash, dead animals and human waste.
It is overwhelming.
I don’t know how any one nation can fix this; the Haitians themselves certainly cannot, through no fault of their own. They are good people and deserve a chance, but I’m afraid they will never get it. They certainly don’t deserve to suffer like this. But there it is. It’s a damn shame.

Simply telling them they need to step up and fix their country is like telling a depressive to "cheer up" or suggesting that maybe the abused wife is somehow to blame for her beatings. It is a terribly naïve perspective...
I get what people are saying with the old ‘pick yourself up by your bootstraps’ point of view, but that is simply not going to work there. The slow-motion disaster that is Haiti began long ago and I don't know if that’s possible anymore or even if it was before the quake. Throw in biblical sized catastrophes and Haiti just starts to implode.

Does anyone see a lesson for the value of birth control in situation like these. Everyone gets politically correct and says, "but it is part of their culture to have lots of children." Well, look what happens when you don't reeducate people about continuing in their self destructive cultural ways. Maybe this is where we need to spend the money after the mayhem of the disease is controlled. When you have a poor country with very deplorable infrastructure, hygiene, waste management and water purification systems to begin with, adding to the crowd of needy people only aggrevates the situation.
Even if someone could wave a magic wand and give them all clean drinking water, that would only delay the inevitable: Some other shortage or overuse of a resource would result in massive death and suffering.

People the infrastructure was devastated by the earthquake along with 250,000 people. Well guess what, the UN and other entities who care about human suffering has not given up. Im an RN too and if I only knew how to get there, I would.
I was in Haiti in the 70's. Papa Doc was still alive. The infrastructure was shoddily constructed due to government corruption, and run down. I am suprised more weren't killed by collapsed buildings. One could not drink the water then, either. Don't blame it all on the quake and hurricane. It has been said; people get the government they deserve, (or tolerate). In the end, a country IS the people.
