I lost 30 pounds three years ago and have kept most of it off but I think about food much more often then I used to and I tend to eat more at a time when under stress then I used to. I think the only reason dieting worked for me was I only did it once and had a healthy relationship with food and body image before dieting. Now I'm kinda neurotic comparatively about food but probably no where near the obsession with food and dieting I see most people I meet have. I wouldn't be surprised if these results were also found in humans. Also, restricting the calories consumed oneself may add another psychological weight as most people must be cognizant about their diet pretty much constantly while on one and while maintaining weight loss.
Well heck, they didn't need to conduct that study, I could have told them that. Stress in and of itself will lead most folks to either restrict their eating, or eat a lot more than normal. For me, it's the latter - and it's comfort foods high in fat and carbohydrates. Stress is a killer.
Why not study increased physical activity to lose weight? Change in life style is the only logical way to keep weight off. Burn more calories lose weight and keep it off through your daily activities and eating habits. Everyone wants the easy way out so fad diets make people broke not skinny!
That's easy to say if you don't suffer from anxiety and/or depression. That's easy to say if you've never had the rug jerked out from under you in life, i.e. loss of employment, infidelity, death of a loved one. People react differently to stress. The article was not about how to lose weight - we all know how that's done. Some people just have to take every opportunity they can find to ridicule others.

The one big difference between mice and humans is that we can accurately assess the likely results of our dietary choices before we make them. Maintaining a healthy weight long-term is all about making the right choices consistently. Not every situation is going to be perfect, but planning ahead and making conscious decisions about your food will keep you on the right path. You don't have to let your urges control your food intake. Think critically each time before you put a food item into your mouth and decide if there might be a better option for you that will help you meet your goals instead of drag you away from them. The choice is always there if you take the time to look at it.
