Typical American way...Lets look for a magic pill to compensate for the pathetic malinformed and sedentary slobs that are clogging our hospitals and increasing our health insurance costs.
A better way would be for insurance agencies and hospitals to deny coverage based on obesity. Maybe once there are real consequences because hey, it seems like shortening your own life span by inhaling that triple cheesburger isn't enough. Lets see the look on their chubby face when they get denied coverage based upon their own laziness. Maybe then they can finally realize that they have no one to blame but themselves.
But considering this is America, the land of the free(from responsibility), I'm sure they will find someone to blame
I'm a physician and would not rx any diet pills for patients.
They are either unsafe, ineffective, or unimpressive in their results. And no pill has ever demonstrated in clinical studies reduction in heart attacks (myocardial infarctions), strokes, or death rates from obesity.
Patients need to understand that diet and exercise is the way to go. Gastric surgery is a last resort, but also must be accompanied by healthy eating and exercise habits in order to succeed.
A pill will NOT do it. You need to do the hard thing - eat less (and better), and exercise. NOTHING else will work. Don't eat after dinner (or have it so early you will be starving). Don't drink high calorie drinks between meals - have water, or unsweetened tea or coffee. Learn what a portion size is (hint, almost anything served in a restaurant is enough for 3-4 people). Then, get out and exercise. Join a gym, dust off the bicycle, go for a swim, or just plain walk - briskly. Try turning off the tv for several nights a week. BE AWARE that everything you eat and drink DOES matter.
