NOW this communist administration is taking away your kids choices. They are getting the kids prepared at an early age now. Getting them used to being controlled by Big Brother and brainwashing them in schools as well. Little by little, that's how they operate.
This administration and their shadow government rulers are taking our freedoms away. We are not their children and that is the way they are treating us. They are power freaks and communist demons imo. (Can't leave out the imo part.) We are in big trouble. Say bye bye to the USA and hello to the USSA. Controlled by George Soros. He is EVIL!!! (imo, of course)
They can also take their global warming scam and choke on it too!
Deny it if you want to, but it won't change the outcome.
If these kids got out and played outside instead of sitting at a computer game for hours, they would not be fat.
Next stop for the Obama socialist express, regulating our shopping list to make sure we don't buy too many unhealthy foods followed closely by outright bans and criminal penalties.
Haha, this is what America gets for sitting on their butts and letting the international banks run this country into the ground. I hate to see all of the things like this and when they fine lemonade stands but it is necessary. We will only see how precious freedom is when we lose it. I have spent the better half of my life trying to warn people about the fascist tip-toe our govt has been making on our freedoms to only be ignored. You think this is bad, just wait. They are saving the worst for last. The saddest part of this whole thing is that my parents hope they will die before it comes down, my generation is sucked into myopic consumerism, religious zealots wait for some mythical diety to save us, and our children will pay the price for our ignorance and laziness. Its time to stop making excuses why we cant stand up and have some dignity and self respect and say NO!
What's the matter Michelle Obama you tired of your daughters asking you to take them to McDonalds and buy brownies for their School's Fund Raiser so you get your idiot of a husband to pass regulation laws of brownie sales and "champion" idiots who decide to attack on Corporations who are not responible for the Obesity of the American Population? The problem lies not in our food but in the fact that politics allow Child Molesters, Derange lunatics, and who knows what else go free and live in neighborhoods similar to their old hunting grounds. this has "frozen" outside playtime. With no physical activities done outside of the school's PE class the body won't require to burn off the gain energy and resources from the food. Duh this is like Grade school science. You can eat as much as you want so long as you do an equal amount of physical exertion.
You don't have to worry about that because insurance companies will start it first. They will be monitoring the sewer and drains to make sure you are brushing your teeth and that you aren't consuming too much fat... as they should because they're paying for your indescretions.
You know what gets to me? They ban Brownie and Pizza bake sales, but feed the kids frozen pizza several times a month for the government subsidized lunch program.
Ronald Reagan administration declared ketchup a vegetable in school lunch programs.
School districts cut the expense by using corporate contracts with food companies whose products are full of fat, sugar, salt, carbs and preservatives, but yeah, lets go after the First Lady in her attempt to have the schools be more accountable for providing real food. Let's start with catagorizing condiments as such and not a vegetable.
Not knocking ketchup. I'm knocking a President that declared a condiment a serving of vegetable and eliminated other vegetables in a meal that contained ketchup packets according to the changed standards. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear.
Never occurred to me to call Ronald Reagan a socialist for changing the standards for school lunches.
After reading the article I wrote to Obama and told him that this type of legislation is the reason why people call him a socialist.
I really have a challenge with most of the legislation this First Family champions. The First Lady has been running around trying to drum up support for this legislation.
Can we focus on jobs? If more people had jobs, they could feed their families in the first place and the rest of America would not have to feed them. It's a tall order though because soooooo many of them do not have high school diplomas.
Maybe that should be a requirement - having a high school diploma before getting welfare. I am tired of giving money to people that make stupid decisions. That means that we too are stupid because we are rewarding their dumb behavior.
Yeah, got that "Reagan was Evil!!" came through pretty clear. But "A Serving of Vegetable" was decided based on nutrient content. A pack of ketchup that a kid might use on their fries is on par nutrition-wise with a few baby carrots that most kids will just throw away. Offering the school more choices is indeed not called socialism, Reagan would have been called socialist had he told schools they were not allowed to serve condiments because they might be unhealthy.
Is it just me or does it seem that the more involved the federal government gets in the day to day decisions made at public schools, the lower grades get and the higher childhood obesity gets.
Grades are low>Increase classroom time by eliminating breaks
Now Kids are over weight>Limit food variety
Now Kids aren't eating right>Have classes on nutrition
It doesn't matter how much control a society gives to the governmental anal retentive megalomaniacs, they will take more regardless of your complaints and rape your natural rights capriciously. They can't help it, I believe. They lack the basic psychological ego controls and restraint mechanisms that normal people have....sort of like a sociopath in reverse.
They will always shove THEIR idea of utopia down YOUR throat. They will lie, cheat, conive, and steal to get their way. And they will NEVER admit they were wrong- their idea really sucked. Yet they always win in the "law wars". We can send a man to the moon, but we cannot seem to maintain a nation of free people. Hell, half of Americans don't really WANT to be free. They will fall for anything as long as the government says it's for safety or for our own good.
Maybe we ought to create a country within a country of those who do want freedom. The only other option is civil war. It has already begun. The anal retentives already send political prisoners to penal institutions on a regular basis. They call it the "War on drugs". Then there are the inane gun laws....
Here's a thought, why doesn't the govt. fix what has been on their table for years first, like Social Security, a broken public education system and healthcare system before going after the Martha Stewart's of the local PTA.
SOMEHOW ( God only knows how) our generation grew up, played outside ( inside was for when you were sick or raining cats & dogs), drank milk 3X's/day ( subsidized by the State for morning milk at school), ate dinner together that was actually cooked & included veggies., rode bikes, built forts, played tag, hiked ( Girl/Boy Scouts), swam (local pool in the summer), swam ( in the winter, a local community center), raked leaves in the fall, helped in the family garden & didn't worry about what we ate.
Children's bodies are growing at a huge rate & NEED calories (nurse), but we didn't drink soda all day, everything thing our parents bought at the grocery store didn't have "High Fructose Corn-syrup" as it's 1st. or 2nd. ingredient, & we had bake sales in high school, cookie drives ( Girl Scouts), & candy sales (Band). Hell, even our J.C. Penny's store allowed non-profits to have bake sales at its' entrance.
I'd KILL to be the same size I was then. But then, we never worried about "Carpal THUMB Syndrome." Movies were a special treat, T.V. was mostly for after dark except on Saturday. And my heart goes out to today's kids for their loss of this rich, childhood time of learning to "be themselves."
Wow, did you people even read the article? By your comments, I doubt that you all can even read. It's to limit bake sales that are keeping your kids fat! Daily or even weekly bake sales (even as fundraisers) seem very excessive.
Grow up and approach this rationally. I forgot, you people are the reason why the govt. needs to step in. YOUR IDIOTS!!! You want your kids DUMB and FAT! Then you don't want health insurance for them so they can really lead a quality life. Go back to watching Fox News and let the adults do the hard work that this country needs!
I guess your implication is that the federal government and people like yourself should rule america with an iron first and force people to do what they feel should be done. Typical. If you were really as smart as you think you are you would realize that forcing peoples everyday lives would never have a good outcome. I eat whatever I feel like, including fast food, but I also workout and am in better shape than 99% of people. I don't feel like I need the government telling me what I can and can't eat because some idiot thinks they know what is best for me.
America wake up this liberal, socialist, fabianist marxist democrats are using the tools that they allways have used in the past except this time people begin to noticed the government intrusion in their lifes, they want to take away from your rights.
1) no sugar in your food
2) salt
3) fat,transfats
4) fasten your seat belt
5)helmet when you riding your bike, skateboard,
6)no smoking, eating, talking on your phone, while you driving
7) dont used your lawmower, fireplace, airblower, BBQ grill
8) no piza, cookies, sodas, hanburgers any kind of meats.
I can go on and on thats the way democrats take your right away one thing at a time, airport scanners gropping your mom ,13 yearsold sister, grandmom brother father, all in the name of security they are taking your freedoms away, in the name of health they are taking your rights of your chilldren.
I remember when the democrats and liberals told us dont let the republican get into your bedroom elect us will stop then.
Well democrats are into our bedroom, toilet, (one sheet of toilet paper to save the planet) kitchen, living room (can't used incandecent light bulbs) can't used wood in your fire place (save the planet )
democrats always make issues so important to get elected like black, hispanics, women ,abortions chilldren, gays transgender, criminals, the planet, air, water trees now they are using the environment and security to take your rights away.
REMEMBER THIS WORDS GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH, WHEN YOU ARE SCARE OF THE GOVERNMENT YOU HAVE TIRANNY, WHEN THE GOVERNMENT IS SCARE OF YOU WE HAVE FREEDOM.
Idiocracy...stop calling me an idiot because I don't want the government to be my mother.
Bake sale don't make kids fat, I am 48 years old and have been to countless bake sales over the years and I weigh 195 and am 6 feet tall. My money has helped kids go all over the world through schools and churches.
Buying ten rice crispy treats for your hefty child is what makes them fatter. Approaching this rationally means that I get to choose what is best for me, or my child to eat and drink...I DO NOT NEED MICHELLE OBAMA TO TELL ME WHAT I CAN FEED MY CHILD!
I find it funny you accuse "everyone" of being and idiot and you "doubt you all can even read" when your punctuation is so poor.
"YOU'RE IDIOTS" is the proper way to insult me...not "YOUR IDIOTS" This would imply that I own the idiots, not that I am one. Maybe you should have studied harder in writing class instead of protesting the personal freedoms that make America great.
Maybe Michelle should just lead by example, go on a diet and lose about 50 or 60lbs, herself. I don't remember anyone electing her to decide policy on anything. They, being good little leftists, don't encourage people to do what's right for their children, but they will force people to do what they say, or else.
First of all, Socialism and socialists have nothing to do with this bill. Socialism is an ECONOMIC system. I would label this bill more as Fascism.
We do not need the government telling us what we can eat and when and where we can eat it or sell it. The government is not our mommy. Chip, chip, chip. (That's the sound of what the government is doing to our freedoms, one by one).
ohio mike, the term is humorous, but this is not something that needs regulation at the federal level.. but "public health groups" have decided that this should be shoved down everyones throat, instead of letting local school boards regulate it.
Okay, now while I agree childhood obesity... and adult obesity is a problem, being a few pounds overweight myself, regulating bake sales is ridiculous!!!!!
However, all these personal attacks against Mrs Obama are unnecessary.
And Ohio Mike is a fantasy, an invention of left wing nuts that think they know what's BEST for everyone and by gawd, they're going to enforce their idiotic ideas on you with the help of the government; Perhaps someone should ban the leftist koolaide and protect the "Mikes" of the world from their delusions and prevent them from listening to ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN and the other leftist propaganda "news" organizations. At least Fox gives a fair and balanced presentation and lets you make up your own mind and their reporters don't get "tingly" feelings in their legs over some candidate.
BTW for those of you that didn't read the article.... it doesn't say Michelle Obama had anything to do with this proposed legislation being written. It merely stated that she's a "champion" against childhood obesity.
You reading something into the article, that's not there.
What's next, banning kids from bringing treats to class on their birthday? Banning parents from sending a brownie in a child's packed lunch? Ban concession stands at school sporting events? When do they move on to grocery stores?
Childhood obesity is not going to change because the kids have bake sales. When I was in school there were bake sales by students groups and the PTA to raise money for all kinds of things. Childhood obesity was not an issue back then.
Childhood obesity is not a food issue, it's an activity issue called exercise.
. At least Fox gives a fair and balanced presentation and lets you make up your own mind and their reporters don't get "tingly" feelings in their legs over some candidate.
perhaps when they actually report news, but every single one of their commentators is far right, and fox news gives more airtime to their commentators than they do to their news reporting.
colonialgirl, maybe you are watching your local news fox affiliate? and not FOX NEWS, the cable channel? 10 minutes of beck and i'm ready to puke at the lies and half-truths.
Do a little research on childhood obesity which, by the way, is at an all time high, and dig a little deeper to find how many health issues obese children are either suffering from or will suffer from. Diabetes is a hideous and ever worsening disease, and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
If PARENTS gave a freakin' @#$% about their children and stopped buying JUNK FOOD and took time to actually get their children up and out to play, American children wouldn't be subject to such preventable diseases.
So, our POTUS and 1st Lady are interesting in ensuring that our children will, at LEAST, get good nutritious meals at school, and that the less fortunate latch-key children might also have a decent nutritious meal for dinner. They want to limit "bake sales" so that kids aren't tempted to spend their lunch money on donuts, cup cakes too frequently. And yes, somebody has to step up to the plate because parents sure don't give a flying flip about the physical or mental health of their children!
Under the Clinton administration, legislation was passed to get sugar-filled, empty calorie filled soda pop vending machines out of the schools and a majority REPUBLICAN senate/congress passed that legislation with few dissenting votes.
I just LOVE selective memory, and I just LOVE that some people are so ignorant that they cannot see the intrinsic value of this proposed legislation. I just LOVE the fact that some people don't understand how malnutrition affects their OWN WALLETS in the long run. I just LOVE the idiocy of the revoltingly ignorant right-wing lugnuts!
Good LORD! If you want to have bake sales to raise money go ahead and do it OFF SCHOOL CAMPUSES! I realize that compromises your ability to corner the market more aggressively, but you'll come up with something creative! How 'bout you set up shop in the parking lot of a local Wally World or Caca-Kmart and throw out a net! They'll be jonesing for a big fat hunk of sugary trans-fats after they've spent hours shopping for inferior "Made in China" crap that will later be recalled because of malfunction or the fact that it contains carcinogens and other poisonous substances!
GOOD LORD! The dumbing down of America continues. I say: BRING THIS LEGISLATION ON!" Do what PARENTS don't have the sense to do themselves, or should I say they just don't have the time to do themselves.
@ LucyT : Not starting. This has been going on for many years.
Examples:
Bussing the kids to and from school-- it maintains the herd mentality where the kids are not allowed to be walking by themselves and have time to enter their own minds and think. Don't want any free thinkers around.
Helmets for every activity except sleeping. Can not allow the kids to take any kind of risk--they must become used to the government's caccoon of safety. Don't want them to question anything that NANNY demands.
Full schedule of regimented after school activities--again, no time to themselves.
Perhaps the federal government could set up vouchers whereby mothers who would have baked cookies simply send carrot sticks and the school is compensated a dollar and a half for lost revenue. this money could be collected by putting a tax on fattening foods and soda and redistributed to schools everywhere.
for those of you who think i am not being sarcastic i would just like to say your brilliant.
You're whats wrong with America in my eyes! We are losing our freedom left and right! I find it very inflammatory that you think the government needs to do what parents don't have the sense to do themselves. Stay out of my life. There is no evil greater then someone like you. This is why we came to America. To be left alone from people like you.
She's the one who should not be eating the brownies. Has she looked at herself in the mirror - from behind?
Oh ..... and by the way ..... Fox news is not fair and balanced just because they say it is. Fox is no more fair and balanced than the other three networks. The only difference is that their pile of crap leans to the right instead of to the left.
Oh and by the way ..... Nazi - Nazi - Nazi - Nazi - Nazi .....
Get out of my life. If I want a brownie I will eat a brownie. There is nothing Mrs. Big Butt can do to keep me or my kids from eating a brownie. By what stretch of anyone's imagination gives the Federal Government the right to stick their nose into my life and tell me I can't have a brownie. Talk about intrusion. Lord love a duck, this is unbelievable.
And ..... which government agency is going to be funded with a bajillion dollars to implement and enforce this farce. And ..... is the FBI going to throw a bunch of teachers in jail for selling a few brownies. Get out of my life. We should get the ACLU to help us sue the government to give us back our freedoms.
why does the government need to order only certain foods be eaten? should they just close all the fast-food joints and resturants that don't meet your definition of "healthy" next? should the government keep everyone in a nice , safe little cocoon so that nobody can eat unhealthy things, take any chance, etc.?
I don't think the feds should regulate it. I said as much in my post above #1.34
Nonetheless, the concern for overweight kids is really problem in American...so maybe stuffing your kids full of brownies from a bake sale isn't such a good idea. Unless of course you don't care if your kids die of some disease related to obesity.

Greg4422 - I would rather my children died young having lived a free and full life than to live forever under your tyranny and depravity. I unequivocally reject your sick twisted idea of Utopia. I have my own sick twisted idea of Utopia, thank you. At last I looked, the Constitution gave me the right to create Utopia in my own back yard WITHOUT your interference. Go f up your own back yard.
The REAL problem is that many Americans have been dumbed down in public indoctrination, I mean education to the point where they depend on somebody else to do all of their thinking for them. Lord knows, they certainly can't do it themselves. They've only been trained WHAT to think, not HOW to think.
I would rather my children died young having lived a free and full life than to live forever under your tyranny and depravity
You sound like a fool. "Under my tyranny and depravity"? I said the government should not regulate this matter...however I did ask the parents a very serious question.... whether you want your fat azz kids to die from some disease related to obesity. That's not tyranny or depravity, that's forcing parents to consider the health of their kids, as they should. This has nothing to do with some silly pretend question of a constitutional issue... but rather a human question of"do you give a dam about your own kids....if you don't then let the little fat monsters eat themselves to death... I don't give dam either way.... but maybe you should. That's all I was saying
And lack of proper nutritional guidelines in the home and at the mall. Food courts, snacking at the computer, visiting grandma's place, etc. The school already has nutritional guidelines that their required to follow from the state. No please no more guidance from Washington. How much do we have to pay Rangle to get that bill throwed out. Enough!!!
Wrong sweaver209: everything is healthy for you while at the sametime unhealthy for you. Lack of proper exercise is the main problem. We already educating our youth that moderate proportions of anything will help them. Don't confuse them with that whole one day tomatoes bad for you next day they good for you. That is just a load of scrape metal that hasn't been thrown in the smelter yet.
I do agree that we have enough with Washington telling us what to do. The only chance we have however of changing their minds is to strike a blow that is clear as crystal to them that we had enough. I'm not talking about forming a stupid idiotic political party that will get swallowed up by the demorons and the Republidiots it has to be something drastic...not too drastic like that person who said he was gonna shoot Obama...but drastic, eye catching, and with the message so easy to read that a person from China who doesn't speak a single syllable of english can understand it meaning regardless of this fact. As of right now I haven't the slightest idea...everything I can think of can be spin by politics to become something sinister and evil...
I hear you dark mage and were both on the same page! Oh are we ever. No politics just common sense with a crowd. But at the same time i know people who continue to stuff the worse stuff than you can ever image in their mouth and say it good and good for you. AGH!!!
only school food that tasted good by entire childhood was the rectangular pizzas. I didn't eat anything else but the burgers. everything else was nasty. its more nutritious to eat junk food than to skip lunch and not eat, which is great way to stall a metabolism. Food needs to taste good not just be nutritious.
Finally an intelligent thread, except for grammar and spelling, thinking of ways to fix the problem instead of anti-Obama rhetoric. I think it is definitely lack of playing outside and engaging in sports that is causing extremely overweight kids. While it is a parenting issue, the problem is parents can not say no to their kids anymore, it is kind of pathetic. I could see if you are on the run and need to feed them fast food once in a while, but have them lay off the other things like chips and soda. Sign them up for sports and make them get a job instead of sitting around on facebook all day. Also, who allowed that child in the picture to dress up in a hoodie and hat especially while this picture was going to be on a national website.
Stuffing the mouth while sitting in front of a video game or tv for hours every day is what is causing childhood AND adulthood obesity.
Turn off the tv, lock up the video games and turn off the sports games, and soap operas, then take the kids outside and ALL of you get some exercise and vitamin D (from the sun light).
I watch very little tv NO sports watching and eat enough for a 300# man BUT, I get lots of exercise from my work and am outside a lot.
I'm 6' tall at192#s. A few weeks ago I CARRIED a 130# flywheel about 100 yards to the machine shop. I'm also 71 years old.
While this bake sale regulating is bad enough, other parts are just as disturbing. Schools are offering 3 squares a day for low income families. During breaks from school, the meals can be delivered to their homes. WTF!!!
First welfare, then food stamps, then mortgage principal reduction, then "unlimited" unemployment, now subsidized meals and the DREAM act. When are people going to be responsible for their own actions. I'm tired of hearing, "You can't punish the children for the actions of the parents." Why not? Actions have consequences and the government shouldn't be there to bail out every stupid thing you do in your life.
Get the Federal government out of my life and my wallet!!!!! I'm tired of having to pay for everyone else's mistakes and problems!!!!
How intelligent can any of these threads be when dealing with this subject. This piece of legislation is so stupid that it just takes our breath away and makes us think of how stupid the government is and how stupid the president and the congress and Mrs. Obama is for allowing valuable time to be wasted on this. The financial and social and military worlds are crashing around us and these people are trying to tell me that my kid can't have a brownie in school. Have you in your lifetime ever heard of anything more stupid than that. A famous American once said " Stupid is as stupid does."
I agree that kids need to get off their butts and get more exercise but having the federal government tell me not to buy a brownie for my kids is not going to make him skinny.
I think it is sad that schools need to sell cookies to have enough money to teach our children. Here is an idea: fund the schools properly and let the kids study instead of sell. Granted, selling stuff is probably all they will do once they finish school. I had to sell everything from magazines (appalling) to fruit (equally appalling) to chocolate (easier to sell, but pointless) and all these things did was to create stress and make me do something I am not comfortable doing (asking people for money.) Let kids be kids and not little salesmen doing the job of companies. In fact, if these companies didn't employ child labor, perhaps more real jobs would be created?
The schools are funded properly. You can blame lack of funds for actual education costs on a lot of things, but lack of funding is not one of them. i.e. wasteful spending and twisted priorities.
Besides these monies are used either for the faculty Christmas and New Years Eve parties at the downtown Marriott, or the diverse-education trips for the kids to go to Disneyworld, or NYC, or to Laser Quest.
the schools get $, but these bake sales, and so on go towards a little better for the kids. like for uniforms, equipment, instruments.... how anal can someone be to think that a bake sale is a firm ground to base childhood porkers? it comes from bad diet at home. fast food. junk food. kid wants, kid gets. up late playing x-box from the time they drop their books at the front door after school, or right to the internet, INSTEAD OF GOING OUTSIDE, doing healthy type activity, even a jog. oh wait, my bad. even in washington DC, kids cant do outdoor activities, without getting shot or abducted, or other... kids are getting fatter, but its not because of bake sales.
STexan. really who doesn't work for an employer who doesn't have some sort of Christmas party? What school doesn't have field trips? I've gone to amusement parks, historic parks, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania Renaissance Fair, circuses, and in marching band... OY! We went to Disney, Coast Guard Academy, Azalea Festival in Richmond, Kings Dominion... SOME were paid for my fundraisers.
Of course, when I graduated our school was in top 20 in the state of Pennsylvania.
STexan, most schools are under funded. when I was a kid you didn't have to buy $300 - $400 worth of supplies every year. the school provided all things needed for education. only thing you needed was a notebook with paper and a pencil. now we pay more school taxes and get less from it. its so rediculouse what needs to be baught, I am expecting the kids to have to bring 5 gallons of gas for the school buses each day soon. they don't give back anything so why do kids need to buy scissors and rullers etc... EVERY year? where did last years go?
They DON'T need to sell cookies to teach our children. They need decent teachers and sane administrators to teach our children. They fail that test consistently. Look at the droves of high school graduates who can't read or write past a third grade level. (Some can't even do that).
Of course, it doesn't help that we spend much of our precious resources trying to educate the ineducable and the unmotivated. Putting those students in with the rest just dumbs down the whole. Now, after a couple of generations of public schooling, we have people running the schools who are too stupid to even see we are trying to educate the ineducable.
It would help tremendously if schools would teach children HOW to think instead of WHAT to think.
Paperwork costs for complying with new government regs.
Bloated school board costs and waste
Athletic and extracurricular costs not kept in check
Out of control labor costs vs effective teaching costs **
Added labor costs for babysitting unruly and undisciplined students at the expense of those students who wish to learn.
Infrastructure costs vs their ROI for health/safety, environment and energy concerns
** A recent report in the Des Moines Sunday Register cited that the pay increases Iowa teachers get for a masters degree does not translate well to classroom effectiveness.
Once again, read the whole article before commenting. There are other ways to raise funds for field-trips, uniforms, dances, whatever. Ways that don't contribute to an already unhealthy lifestyle. Kids already eat too much junk food and fast-food. At this rate our national debt will skyrocket trying to care for the overweight people in the future as is.
It is all about trying to curb unhealthy behaviors in kids because is seems most parents can't do it at home. Govt is only stepping in because they have to. You want them out of your life? Try stopping your self destructive behavior...at least on your kids.
Idiocracy...so what about the parents who do provide good nutrition and make their kids turn off the xbox and go out and play? They get lumped in with this bloated government program.
My issue with this isn't good nutrition, it is the government intrusion into my Private life that has me ready to revolt. When big brother steps in, the parent gets pushed to the background and we start living in a nanny state...I would venture to say that 99% of Americans want to make their own decisions about food and raising children, not follow the rules put forth by an overbearing government.
Once again, read the whole article before commenting. There are other ways to raise funds for field-trips, uniforms, dances, whatever.
I did read the article, and it says the same thing you do:
She says selling junk food can easily be substituted with nonfood fundraisers.
So what are these other fundraisers? Selling worthless magazines, candles and wrapping paper? The schools use the bake sales because they raise the most money.
@idiocracy - Have you ever spent any time on a school PTO board? If not, then you have absolutely no idea how much money the PTO raises and what these funds are used for. Nor do you know how that money is spent. Yes, you can sell giftwrap, for many schools these are their largest single fundraisers. But there are also many smaller fundraisers, such as bake sales, that also raise money. In today's economy, these smaller fundraisers are actually more effective at raising money, families are easier to spend a couple dollars here and there to support their schools, through bake sales, or similar fund raisers, than they are to spend $20 on a roll of wrapping paper they can get at the dollar store.
Washington DC spends the most per student. Well in excess of $20,000 per student per year.
They are near the bottom in performance.
Thousands of districts spend less than $3500 per student per year and out perform DC.
Having said that, the issue isn't money. It's local control. There is no authority granted to the Federal Gov't allowing them to regulate bake sales. Unless your school bake sale sells items across state lines.
But if Obama and the Democrats think they should be able to control every little thing you do down to what you eat...then those of us who are loyal to the US Constitution will have to oppose them in every little thing they do.
Americans are too brainwashed to want to do anything about it!
Look at the posters who say that our kids are too fat and unhealthy, and that justifies the bill. Fat and unhealthy=bad.
The government comes along and says "We think it's because you are not eating what you should be. No need for you to do anything about it yourselves. We'll take care of it. "
So the American people breathe a sigh of relief because now their kids won't be fat and unhealthy anymore.
I find it amazing that people keep saying all kids are fat or obese. I have a 7 year old and an almost 9 year old. We have a hard time finding pants to fit either of them because they are too thin, even the adjustable waist bands don't get small enough. They have been outiside playing in the snow for the past hour and a half, and guess what, the majority of the kids in their classes are similarly sized. In a class of 22, there is one girl and one boy in my sons first grade class that are heavy, and I wouldn't call them obese, just bigger than the rest of the kids. I guess we now know why our kids are getting failing grades, when two of 22 is considerd the majority...
Now, I'm a left-wing liberal on most things, but on this matter I'm going to agree that this is too much government intrusion into our lives. Bake sales are not something that should be happening so frequently that they're interferring with the schools providing nutritious meals. Yes, childhood obesity is a problem but I find it doubtful that fund raising bake sales significantly factor into this. There a better ways to fight obesity than this.
It called making our neighborhoods safe and making playing outside fun again. I won't let my children (when I have any) outside unless me or my future wife is out with them watching them. You never know who a child molester now of days....
And to those who will most likely try to sound smart here...don't tell me the odds are slim there was one child molester near my house. another near the local store. and a third near my old grade school. I don't think the chances are slim anymore due to the idiots in washington making all these idiotic decisions.
Is this really the most important thing, the best use of the time and resources of the federal government of the United States - regulating bake sales?? This administration has clearly gone off the deep end. Better bring in the TSA and a couple of full body scanners - those kids might be bringing in contraband cupcakes to sell in the girls room.
Just as I wanted the government out of people's bedrooms, I also want these nerdy do-gooders out of people's kitchens and diets. I don't care how well meaning they are -- this is not their business. Imagine a bunch of fools with so little self control that they haplessly and pathologically massively overspend having the audacity to tell us about dietary restraint and what to eat! Utterly laughable and pathetic. Get out of peoples personal lives and start concentrating on doing your own damn job responsibly!
Articles like this really get the wack-jobs out. The sky is falling, the sky is falling!!! It doesn't take much to get you sheeple worked up. And for Battle Dark Mage...you don't have a wife or kids because you're paranoid and probably sit in your house all day watching Fox News. Which actually is a good thing that you don't procreate.
These bake sales are not the same that we had when we were kids. They sell the cheapest pizza for $1 a slice or more and they do it on a daily/weekly basis. Get your school, kids and groups to start thinking outside the box. Isn't that the whole idea of school? To use that gray matter between your ears. I hope our kids turn out smarter than these contrarian idiot authors.
It doesn't take much to get you sheeple worked up.
How funny! You calling the people protesting 'sheeple', yet your the one wanting to be herded around and told what to do. Don't try and use the terms if you don't understand them.
idiocracy, whether or not "it's the same bake sale" as when we were kids, does it justify the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT starting a "Department Of Bake Sale Control"?
you are being ludicrous, this is in no way the federal governments responsibility to regulate. there is nothing wrong with once a week pizza day, but pizza evey day is too much. but even then IT IS NOT THE PURVIEW OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO REGULATE THIS!
it is for local government and school boards to decide this
A few words and thoughts come to mind in reference to this article.... asinine, ludicrous, absurd, farcical....the epitome of government over-stepping its mandate.
I would imagine a bulk of the calories consumed by the average student are done off school premises therefore proving that most things, habits included are learned in the home and/or under the purview of the parents. Why should we allow the government to further usurp parental rights? This is exactly the type of Big Brother government most fear.
Am I the only one that thinks the onus is on the parents for policing the behavior of their progeny? Shouldn't schools exist to teach math, science and the language arts and not to be the tool of implementation for the government's social engineering programs?
As an addendum, we the taxpayers are now suppose to pay for and supply the evening meal as well? Let’s see, we already pay for school provided free breakfast, free or subsidized lunch and now this? How many of those families receiving such government handouts and subsidies have cable TV, Netflix subscriptions, cellular phones and $100 pairs of Nikes, etc.?
I am a special education teacher and I agree with you that schools are becoming responsible for teaching kids more than just academics. This is due to the idiots having kids that should not be. They can't take care of themselves let alone a kid but keep having them. That is where government should come in there needs to be tougher laws for parent that are not doing their jobs as parents. Some parents even act as if it is an inconvienence to bring their child to school on time or even at all and pick their child up from school, and forget coming to any meeting that pertain to how your child is doing in school.
So do we continue to punish the kids (some of which only get the meals they get at school) for the screwed up parents they have?
I'm so glad to see Darcie doing her job to help educate and care for the special education kids. Maybe we should all go back to sterilizing 'idiots' and poor folks like they did in the good old days, hmmm??
You totally misunderstood!!! When I said idiots I didn't mean people with disabilities or even poor people that attempt to take care of their kids the best they can. I just meant the people that are too into themselves to care about their child!!!
That's great you send your kids to private school. You can stay in your own secluded little world. The rest of us will deal with the real world and teach any and every kid that comes to our door (since every child has the right to be educated!!). We do our best to teach them at school what we can. You have no clue what some kids go through when they leave our doors for home (because of the screwed up parents that just don't care)!!
My thoughts exactly, Native New Yorker! I see Medicaid patients come in with gold teeth, Blackberrys, and of course perfectly manicured nails with "diamonds" on them (which I'm sure my taxes went to help them get those things) and I have had to cut those "luxuries"(the manicures/pedicures) out of my budget.
I do NOT want the government deciding what I can or cannot put into my mouth! There are better things the government can do - like finding more jobs for people so they don't need government assistance or making sure our country's secrets aren't exposed for the whole world to see!
My own secluded world includes my disabled child. Don't tell me what I have no idea about. Perhaps you have no idea what it's like for parents to deal with special education teachers who throw around terms like idiot when their education should have improved their vocabulary and opened their mind to the fact that words hurt. When the children you teach hear you insulting people by calling them stupid or idiotic they assume it's ok to use those same words to describe others. And we wonder why bullying is so rampant in schools today.
o'really, you seem awfully defensive. I agree with Darcie, there are way too many morons (see I didn't say idiots) having kids that don't bother to take care of them and hoist them off of the school system to parent. It seems that many people would have those children be punished (go hungry) because their parents are morons. That's an awfully heartless stance to take, don't you think?
As far as this bill, while it may seem silly to limit bake sales during school hours (it doesn't seem silly to me), it does not limit bake sales done off school grounds or off-hours. So a school group can still hold a bake sale on the weekends or after school to raise money and then the parents can be there to make the buying decisions. I mean these kinds of purchasing decisions should be in the parents hands, not the child's, shouldn't it?
I understand your frustration. I have a special needs child and my wife and I make it to every IEP and parent teacher conference. I see what you see, parents who cant take care of themselves trying to raise a child, let alone a special needs child, failing miserably. I have the students over several times a year. I see the students in dirty clothes while thier mother and father use the Social Security they recieve for the child on thier new Blackberry. Its disgusting and frustrating.
I also agree with your stance on private schools. They dont prepare the children for the diversity they will find when they are out of school. They leave with a decent education and absolutely unprepared for whats ahead. I know because we made the mistake of private schools with our oldest daughter. She absolutely failed when she was faced with competition from children with a public education. The perfect world of the private school couldnt step in and protect her from reality.
Darcie, keep teaching and know you have the support of others...
I really don't care about bake sales. I do care about government intrusion into the most mundane aspects of our lives when there's better things to do.
I was addressing Darcie's attitude and language. As a special ed teacher, she should know better. Although my child was in private school after 3 years in public school, it included kids from one of the poorest and dangerous cities in the US. (Camden, NJ) While my child was in public school, I heard teachers use the most offensive language in front of their students. One PE teacher actually referred to his adaptive phys-ed class as "tard gym."
While it is important to feed our children's bodies, I am much more concerned about what these "teachers" are feeding their minds. Am I defensive? Damn right I am.
That makes no sense - all private schools that I have looked at REQUIRE the parents to do the things that she is saying need to be done.
like getting sterilized if they are too stupid to stop having kids they can't take care of?
the funny thing is, that the ones having serial kids aren't the ones classified as having special needs, in some ways, the special needs kids are smarter than their folks.
The federal government should set up a seperate enforcement agency, call it the BBA (Brownie Bashing Administration), fund it with hundreds of billions of dollars and hire a sufficient number of inspectors such that no school is stuck with the dire predicament of not having an authorized, federal enforcer on the grounds at all times. The DOJ should immediately commence litigation against Betty Crocker, Pillsbury and other corporate pushers of brownie mixes who are clearly out for obese profits only.
Way to take an issue and blow it way out of proportion. If your post weren't so pathetic they would almost be funny. It's like the McCarthy era all over again. The ones that are most upset by this action are the ones that probably need it most. Fat and ignorant are not the way to go through life. And stop drinking the Fox News cool-aid. It's making you FAT (between the ears) and PARANOID!
Let me tell you what Nola1 was doing, she was making a joke. That is where a person uses words to create an absurd situation by blowing it all out of proportion. The other posters, until you, were enjoying the joke and adding their wit to the thread.
You should write to the first "lady" and submit your application for "School Humor Police"
We can't have kids enjoying their food...now we need to stop them from enjoying, period.
One more of the Obama mentality. Kids and parents have been raising funds for schools for generations selling baked goods and other foods. Now that the Obama administration is cutting back federal funding more each year, it is even more important that these fund raisers happen. They pay for the activities that government will not pay for, such as band, sports, clubs, overseas trips, etc.
You get lots of fat and carb and more bang for your buck when you have limited bucks. They can eat gourmet when then grow up and have a sense of what healthy nutrition looks like. The schools do the best they can when it comes to feeding kids. Kids like only certain foods, they like to turn their noses up to a whole lot of healthy and nutritious food choices. Talk to the cafeteria cooks, oh they know!!
I think the schools could do a bit better than pizza, chicken nuggets, sloppy joes and a few carrot sticks with ranch dip to make them feel healthy. Give them good, nutritional food. If they don't eat it, that's not the school's problem. At least that's the way my parents dealt with my aversion to their cooking. You don't like it, you don't have to eat it. Just don't whine when you get hungry.
I work in a poor school in Texas. This year my district told us that parents are not allowed to bring cupcakes for a kids birthday. Teachers are not allowed to give out candy as a treat...and yet when I look at the menu for lunch we rotate chicken fingers, pizza, chili dogs, corn dogs, hamburgers, and burritos. For breakfast we offer doughnuts and breakfast pizzas every morning.....oh yeah we're fighting that obesity thing by getting rid of those cursed cupcakes...
There's only so much the schools can do with the money they get for meals. I used to volunteer in a grade school cafeteria and the meals weren't that bad, maybe one day a week with something like hamburgers or hot dogs. Most days included salad and fruit. The problem is that the kids regularly would toss the salad and fruit. Any other veggies also went uneaten for the most part.
It's not always what the kids are fed in school, it's also the fact that most schools, especially grade schools have quit including PE in the curriculum. They are so focused on making sure the kids pass the tests that they don't think there is time for PE. One district in AZ is trying to get rid of recess time. It's not a coincidence that childhood obesity rates started increasing at just about the same time as schools got rid of PE classes. That also coincided with the advent of affordable gaming systems, and more TV's in each home.
When I was in jr. high I worked in the school cafeteria. The the program was run by the school district, and food was pretty decent. Then the district contracted the program out. The price parents had to pay went up, and the food was disgusting. The real problem (with he food) is that the program is usually run by some company trying to make a buck cuts as many corners as possible (they have a contract after all, so they don't need good food to get repeat customers) and kids' health is not even considered. I Agree that the real problem is what goes on at home. Kids who eat junk at home will eat junk at school. Kids who watch tv, play video games and post comments on Newsvine at home wil just sit aroun at recess, and probably get a note to keep them from being overexerted in P.E.
And my daughter's biggest complaint, when she would come home as an adult, was that there were no snacks in my house. My kids grew up eating vegetables, lean meats....I remember one of my son's friend's expression the day he went to buy groceries with us and my son asked if we could get cauliflower, which was and remains his favorite food, even though he's almost 40. There are still no snacks here, unless you count fruit, or perhaps raw vegetables.
Feed your kids decently at home, and it won't matter what they eat away from home. Frankly, I used to go eat lunch with my kids, and then with my grandkids on Grandparents' Day, and had trouble not gagging at the taste and quality of the food. It was disgusting.
Have you ever seen the number of employees in the Federal Dept of Education all the way down to local school boards. How much money is wasted on administrative costs that could be used to fund classrooms?
It is not the government's responsibility to govern people's body weight. If this keeps up, we will be monitored for everything we eat and drink, in some asinine attempt to curb obesity and tight fitting clothing. Portion control for the masses. What's next? Forbidding people from buying food because they might overfeed their kids? The inmates are definitely running the asylum. I'm glad I am as old as I am and that I will have no kids. The world is getting more and more screwy everyday.
Well now their even checking your junk and patting you down like a criminal before you board an airplane. How soon before they start that for bus and train travel. Don't laugh, we've seem more devistation from this administration on the economy and financial requirements than any other in modern times. Big Brother is watching!!!
I'm sick and tired of being taxed and regulated beyond what is ABSOLUTELY necessary. Government has gotten WAY to big and full of itself, and needs desperately to be trimmed to the bare essentials!
There is NO COMMON SENSE anymore, and I mean those in 'charge'. They need to stop making stupid, ridiculous laws that waste taxpayer time and money, and go home.
Michelle is just angry about her own large hind end and in the obama way, it was not her fault, but the schools she went to fed her fattening food. First, it's not the food the children eat near as much as the lack of exercise. When I was a kid, we ran around the play ground, we would to school, home from school, we played outside and most the games involved running. Hise and seek, kick the can, baseball, football, . we played on swings, jungle gyms, vooly ball, tennis, badminton. Today, kids ride home from school, go in the house and for the most part stays in until the next morning and time to go to school again. They sit in their rooms talk to friends on the phone instead of walking over to see them. They sit and watch tv or sit at a game consol or computer playing games. We get upset if they play cowboys and indians or war with each other, even though no one ever got hurt and the side could change at will, but instead they are playing war and killing on the game units and computers. As my doctor told me years ago, calories in versus calories out. If you take in more than you use, you will get fat!!!
When I was in middle school 35 years ago a program like this was implemented and if you read the article there are many states and municipalities that do some of the same things. If Obama's name is on it all hell breaks loose. When the kids are in school they are the responsibility of the school and whether you like it or not childhood obesity is a big problem and later on becomes a part of our heatlh care issue debate. Granted this is a little heavy handed but doing nothing is also irresponsible.
Kattlekween...what is NOT fine is that I have to pay for someone else's ANYTHING! Why in the hell should the tax money I send in be used to medicate some lazy ass who ate junk all the time and got sick? Same goes with cancer treatments for smokers...I didn't smoke them, why should I cover that expense?
Once again the Center for Pseudoscience in the Interest of Publicity labors mightily and produces--surprise!--junk science. These people really need to get a life and stop wasting everyone's time hectoring us about how they think we should lead our lives/drive our cars/plan our meals/dress our kids or anything else you can think of that will get them on the evening newcast.
Dinner?????? Did I read that right? We have to serve dinner now? What exactly are food stamps for if kids are going to be fed 3 meals a day at school?
I agree. I hope that the funding for providing these "dinners" will be deducted from the food stampa assistance that would be given to the family. Many schools in Florida already provide breakfast and lunch (plus a summer program of the two meals). Throw in dinner and that should reduce the amount of food stamp assistance. The parent will only need to provide weekend meals so their food stamp amounts for the children should be reduced at least 70%.
Gee, didn't you know that over 40 million Americans now get foodstamps, and who knows how many others get WIC and emergency food boxes?
And not everyone who gets foodstamps is out of work. Kids are stuck in after school programs because their parent(s) are working some crappy job that keeps them at poverty level.
It is definitely time for the pendulum to swing the other way. Public education is a function of state/local governments. The federal government should have no regulations or involvement. No federal funds should be spent on this state function.
Eliminate the Department of Education as part of the effort to balance the federal budget. Return state responsibilities and control of non-federal activities to the states. The only federal role should be that of the courts, to ensure that a state provides equal educational opportunities to all residents. The amount and quality of the education should be determined at the state and local level. They know how to do it - there are many well-trained experts in every state. They don't need federal control, guidance, or assistance.
It didn't "need to step in". It bulled its way in as an unconstitutional power grab just like with most other federal programs.
The federal government really has very limited constitutionally mandated responsibilities. If it stuck to just those duties spelled out in the Constitution, 90% of federal employees could be let go. If it stuck to just those things not prohibited to it by the Constitution, 70% of federal taxes could be ended. Bureaucrats without number would be wandering the streets, dazed and confused (their normal state), unable to feed or clothe themselves.
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."
This, the 10th Amendment to the Constitution, is a restatement of the following declaration from the Articles of Confederation:
"Each state retains its sovereignty, freedom, and independence, and every power, jurisdiction, and right, which is not by this Confederation expressly delegated to the United States, in Congress assembled."
Basically, this says the federal government needs to butt out of anything not specifically mandated by the Constitution as a federal responsibility. The principle in play here is that power should be retained as locally as possible to prevent egregious bureaucratic abuse.
They already do this is the school district where I live. We are not allowed to send our kids in with anything that has sugar as the first ingredient. We can't have bake sales during school hours to raise money. We can't send cupcakes in for their birthdays. They tell us to send fruit snacks or granola bars instead. And on top of it our school district is a peanut free zone so I can't give my daughter peanut butter crackers for snacks or PB&J for lunch. I understand they are trying to get kids to eat healthier but I think the parent should be controlling that, not the school.
The peanut allergy has been give enough exposure over the years, kids who are allergic already know what they can eat and what they can't. Two year olds are instructed to stay away from peanuts until it's confirmed by a doctor that it's ok that they can eat them anymore.
You've got to be kidding - Millions of people of out of work, the country has a deficit that will bankrupt this country forever, and the President won't stay in his office long enough to do any work, BUT - they can ban children's bake sales. Gee - what a bunch of morons.
The absolute stupidity of the "first lady" (she is neither) is typical of those Socialists in the Obama sphere of influence. What a bunch of mind-numbing idiiots!
I am in food retail business. At the beginning of the month, I sold a lot of junk food to people who use food stamp. Most of the time, the parent is not even there. They gave their pin number to their childrena and let them spend their money. If Michelle want to limiti bake sales, they should limit junk food for the food stamp people first. She want to provide dinner for the poor children, then she should reduced the food stamp money also. May be then they would eat healthly and spend their food stamp wisely.
Even the WIC program is flawed. Whole milk for kids over 1 year, they don't need whole milk anymore. It doesn't cover fruit or vegetables. You can buy Cheerios, but not oatmeal.
So it needs to be "tweaked"...it would still be better than the free wheeling program in place where they can load their cart up with nothing but crap, prepared high carb meals with little food value.
Actually, that's not quite true about WIC, at least not where I live. Yes, children up to age 2 are given whole milk, but that's because they need the fat until that age (ask a pediatrician). 2 and over don't have that option. There are vouchers specifically for fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. Only whole wheat bread or tortillas can be purchased. And, actually, you can get oatmeal--or cream of wheat, or several other types of hot cereal. The only other items you can get are rice, beans, cheese, 100% juice drinks, and eggs.
So yes, the WIC program does a good job of making sure their money goes only to healthy foods.
P.S. Tina, I am a vegetarian and try to eat organic as much as possible - not because I am a 'nut', but because I prefer not to ingest the chemicals and pesticides the FDA says are okay for my body (or likely will not show up as some form of cancer until too much time as gone by to notice the correlation).
Moreover, not only are crops sprayed with highly toxic chemicals, the soil in which they are planted have become stripped of rich nutrients and minerals. Beyond that, cows, for example, are regularly injected with steroids & estrogen and are often butchered in filthy, disgusting conditions. Chickens are another story, but both are worth investigating further - if you're up for the eye-opener. The inhumanity of it all is another matter entirely. I never suddenly stopped liking the taste of meat, I simply lost the stomach for it after educating myself.
However, all that said, it is not appropriate to suggest that those who are, as you say, 'health nuts' are somehow advocating this increasing government intrusion into virtually every aspect of our private lives. I have never been a proponent of bigger government, and I have never voted for any politician (or politician's brainchild) that required me to sacrifice any of the personal liberties I enjoy because so many tens of thousands sacrificed their lives in the name of FREEDOM & LIBERTY.
I've quoted this often, and I will continue to do so: "Those who sacrifice essential Liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." [Benjamin Franklin, circa 1755]
We have all been warned.....again and again. What happens from here on depends entirely on the mass majority who will, or will not, allow our Constitutionally protected freedoms to be trampled upon any more than they already have. The internment camps have already been prepared.....
@Rascal - children are actually supposed to drink whole milk until their second birthday, the additional fat is needed for proper brain development, this is what WIC covers, after 2, it drops to 2%.
@Tina - I certainly do not advocate the government telling you what you can buy with your money that you earned, but if you are receiving assistance from the government, than they should be able to regulate what you are buying and ensure that you are purchasing healthy food, not chips and soda, with the money that is being given to you for doing nothing.
Food Nazis.
Dumbest First Lady ever.
i can not believe how retarded thinking came to the mind of.... is she that bored, or stupid?
I vote stupid !!
The economies in the crapper.
Unemployment at 9.7%.
In two unwinnable wars in the middle of the desert.
But thankfully our children wont be subjected to bake sales!
The Devil-1138528,
You don't have to worry about that because insurance companies will start it first.
Ketchup is actually very healthy, the concentrated tomoatoes contain alot of beta carrotine and numerous other compounds. Don't knock ketchup!
No soup for you!
Tomatoes and catsup also have lycopene which is an anti-oxidant. Anti-oxidants are good for you.
Now Grades are going down...
'change"
is what american voted for?
change to dictator/communism is where we are headed.
i see why obama would have left sadam in charge, same mind set,
"mind control"
Idiocracy is here,
I guess your implication is that the federal government and people like yourself should rule america with an iron first and force people to do what they feel should be done.
(That's the sound of what the government is doing to our freedoms, one by one).
from the article:
the first lady asked for more food for the kids, and special interests demanded that bake sales end.
the real truth (as always) is that the special interest groups are screwing it all up, again
the food nazis demanded this, mot the first lady
Unemployment is going higher. Dollar is in trouble. Financial crisis is on the brink in Europe, and asset bubbles in India, Brazil , Ireland...
Not to mention we are in a war.
This article should say it all. This is the most inept President ( and by proxy, FL ) this country has ever seen.
This article says it all about this Administration and their goals.
no bobby, it's about special interests , AGAIN.
special interest groups trying to shove their "oh so helpful" little bit of control freak mentality into everything.
Like unicorns, "food Nazis" are a fantasy, an invention of conspiracy nuts who spend way too much time listening to Fox Non News, et al.
ohio mike, the term is humorous, but this is not something that needs regulation at the federal level.. but "public health groups" have decided that this should be shoved down everyones throat, instead of letting local school boards regulate it.
@colonialgirl
You're drinking the koolaide is you believe Fox news is "fair and balanced"...more like lies and more lies!!!!!
Childhood obesity is not a food issue, it's an activity issue called exercise.
perhaps when they actually report news, but every single one of their commentators is far right, and fox news gives more airtime to their commentators than they do to their news reporting.
colonialgirl, maybe you are watching your local news fox affiliate? and not FOX NEWS, the cable channel?
What part of the US Constitution authorizes the Federal Gov't to regulate Bake sales?
It isn't Interstate Commerce unless you are selling across state lines.
All powers not expressly given to the Federal Gov't are left to the people and the states.
The 9 scariest words in the english language:
"I'm from the government and here to help you."
@ D. Loominator (post#1.18):
You just described Obozo perfectly. His ego won't let him do anything that he thinks isn't the best for his subjects.
Perhaps the federal government could set up vouchers whereby mothers who would have baked cookies simply send carrot sticks and the school is compensated a dollar and a half for lost revenue. this money could be collected by putting a tax on fattening foods and soda and redistributed to schools everywhere.
for those of you who think i am not being sarcastic i would just like to say your brilliant.
asknreceive1,
You're whats wrong with America in my eyes! We are losing our freedom left and right! I find it very inflammatory that you think the government needs to do what parents don't have the sense to do themselves. Stay out of my life. There is no evil greater then someone like you. This is why we came to America. To be left alone from people like you.
asknrecieve,
let's see, what country wanted to make sure that the kids were fed pure foods and in perfect health?
oh yeah some place called Germany in the 1930s and early 40s (Nazi era)
michelle obama wanted to expand the range of school meals, ok, no problem, and government paid for meals should be healthy, no problem there.
but it's not the place of the federal government to decide what locals schools do outside of that meal. that is the place of local schools to decide.
guess what? one size does not fit all, and your way wants to drag the entire country to the lowest common denominator. (which is pretty doggone low)
fat people are fun to watch when they get in and out of cars
Funny how republican's broke with their block everything strategy to let this get through. Tax cuts for the poor and middle class through? OH HELL NO!
Politicians are bastards.
@chipndale610
So you don't care that your fat ass kids die from obesity, heart disease, diabetes or some other fat disease?
greg, why should the fed regulate it?
why does the government need to order only certain foods be eaten? should they just close all the fast-food joints and resturants that don't meet your definition of "healthy" next? should the government keep everyone in a nice , safe little cocoon so that nobody can eat unhealthy things, take any chance, etc.?
provide a valid reason if you do think so
@danwill
This year's (2010) Hanukkah party:
White House Christmas 2009 menu:
White House's state dinner honoring India's Prime Minister Singh:
These are JUST A FEW OF THE WHITE HOUSE PARTY MENUS.
Yep, screw those bake sales.
@D_Loominator
Childhood obisity is a result of lack of excercise.
AGH!!!
Like what exactly? I haven't tried that many different foods and the only ones I can think of are ones I don't like but many others like.
sweaver209, Please don't forget that schools buy food from the lowest bidder. How much of that food is coming from China?
only school food that tasted good by entire childhood was the rectangular pizzas. I didn't eat anything else but the burgers. everything else was nasty. its more nutritious to eat junk food than to skip lunch and not eat, which is great way to stall a metabolism. Food needs to taste good not just be nutritious.
Get them off the sofa and their video games. They should be outside playing. That's where they will get some exercise.Stop molicoddling these kids.
.
The X-box and TV are next. This is the Socialist on social issues.
Isn't this a parenting issue?
Clint - This is Obama's stupid idea. Who do you want us to blame, BUSH?
Obama has usurped more power. There is no Constitutional power given to the Federal Gov't to regulate bake sales. It's not Interstate Commerce.
Get rid of the Anti-Constitutionalsts like Obama and the Democrats, or face a future where everything is controlled by the Gov't.
Idiocracy is here!
Umm do you need the govt to tell you how to feed your kids? If so please give them to a parent with balls.
all i know is im sending my kid to school with a lunch box full of snickers bars and letting him keep anything he makes over the cost of the candy.
thanks for helping create the market lefties.
Clint
Intelligent Thread ??????
What Disneyland Field Trips? Where was this? oh slag I knew I was place in the wrong school...all we did was study and other boring things.
STexan. really who doesn't work for an employer who doesn't have some sort of Christmas party?
It would help tremendously if schools would teach children HOW to think instead of WHAT to think.
ectogamit - Where did the $$$ go?...
I did read the article, and it says the same thing you do:
So what are these other fundraisers? Selling worthless magazines, candles and wrapping paper? The schools use the bake sales because they raise the most money.
Yes Steve. It is the Teachers Unions.
Two thoughts.
1. Obese people only live about 58 years on average. So the healthy will have more room and benefits left to them.
2. " sometimes I wonder if the world is run by smart people who are putting us on, or by imbecils that really mean it". Mark Twain
But if Obama and the Democrats think they should be able to control every little thing you do down to what you eat...then those of us who are loyal to the US Constitution will have to oppose them in every little thing they do.
bobby...what????
Time to get Big Government out of our lives and our children's lives! This is getting scary...
You not being good comrade Spybee you must be good comrade else Big Moron comrade Obama be very angry with you.
Sorry had to make the joke...I got a very...odd...sense of humor
Maybe if the children were seiu members and paid dues there would be no problem?
Spybee - Getting scary?? It was horribly scary a long time ago but nobody noticed. It's too late now.
Enjoy your tyranny in the USSA. Americans are certainly too chicken shirt to do anything about it.
I guess we now know why our kids are getting failing grades, when two of 22 is considerd the majority...
it is too late,
Now, I'm a left-wing liberal on most things, but on this matter I'm going to agree that this is too much government intrusion into our lives.
At least Darcie didn't call them 'tards. The main reason I sent my kids to private school is because of teachers like her.
You totally misunderstood!!! When I said idiots I didn't mean people with disabilities or even poor people that attempt to take care of their kids the best they can. I just meant the people that are too into themselves to care about their child!!!
o'really,
That's great you send your kids to private school.
I long for th day when we only had "govt. cheese" to deal with!
Darcie
Darcie,
I understand your frustration.
Re-read her post - she mentions nothing about sterilizing people. You could infer that from this one sentence:
But that it is not what she said - and what she said is the the truth.
Native New Yorker - AMEN Hit the nail square on the head.
deathmagnet, agreed, the post was meant as illustration through absurdity.
Hahahaha!
Heckuva job here, Brownie!
And the 2 million new enforcement jobs will make obamas job numbers look better too..We will all soon work for the government just like the old USSR
Wait wait do we also get to do "special" pat-downs on people to see if they not smuggling illegal sweets too?
LMAO
Way to take an issue and blow it way out of proportion. If your post weren't so pathetic they would almost be funny. It's like the McCarthy era all over again. The ones that are most upset by this action are the ones that probably need it most. Fat and ignorant are not the way to go through life. And stop drinking the Fox News cool-aid. It's making you FAT (between the ears) and PARANOID!
Thanks Idiocracy!
Kind of funny you mention overseas trips...haven't taxpayer dollars been paying Obama's vacations and "business trips" to Muslims territories?
Nutritional meals at schools? Have you eaten at a public school lately? The meals are not nutritions - loaded with fat and carbs.
Heaven help that geat Republic. Unfortunately it sounds pretty typical of just about any public school.
This would be laughable if it wasn't a sign of the future under our current administration.
How's that hope and change to new world thinking working out for you now!
Thank God my generation didn't have such Idiots-In-Charge running the country.
T
Texan, how exactly are schools wasting money?
Have you ever seen the number of employees in the Federal Dept of Education all the way down to local school boards. How much money is wasted on administrative costs that could be used to fund classrooms?
Watch the movie The Cartel, available now on Netflicks if you want to see what happens to all the money. It certainly doesn't go to the kids.
OMG!!!
Get the Government out of my life!
Amen brother, amen!
Sorry, just looked at your user name again I mean sister <G>.
That's fine until we all have to pay for diabetes treatment on these morons that don't eat right.
Granted this is a little heavy handed but doing nothing is also irresponsible.
leave all the fat in the lunchroom, but get rid of the carbs from home?
ask the state of Florida how they changed the lunch room menu
kattlekween
FYI
there are lots of skinny people with diabetes, it is not just about what you eat, but how the body functions, heredity, etc.
It is better to be thought a fool than speak and remove all doubt--Abe Lincoln
And government regulation of bake sales????????? This is beyond crazy. If it wasn't real, it would be hilarious.
Homeless on the street, veterans uncared for, unemployment at over 10 per cent, jobs allowed to leave this country like water through a sieve
AND THESE @!$%#S WANT TO REGULATE SCHOOL LUNCHES???
Tell the TWIT and his wife to mind their own goddamn business, stay the hell out of our lives and we promise not to revolt.
Let them dip their cookies in that!!
And yet the obamas think nothing about flying in airforce one to chicago for some nice fattening pizza!!
your comprehension isn't so good, is it?
michelle obama pressed for expanded school meals, it was "public health groups" that pressed for this stupidity in regulation.
in other words, special interest groups, again.
And why do you think the goverment needed to step in, in the first place?
John Carter For President......Well said!
hitler would be proud of this current dismal administration.
you obviously know nothing about hitler if you think that.
Hitler Hitler Hitler...Only about 1/10 of the people who use his name even know WHAT the man stood for or did.
His name has become a catch-all insult for anyone people don't agree with.
Until your kid trades that PB&J to a kid who's alergic to peanuts and then the lawyers control that....
The peanut allergy has been give enough exposure over the years, kids who are allergic already know what they can eat and what they can't. Two year olds are instructed to stay away from peanuts until it's confirmed by a doctor that it's ok that they can eat them anymore.
Um yeah, like a two year old would be in control of themselves enough to do that. (rolls eyes)
I guess it's easier than dealing with PROBLEMS!
Federal Gov't: GET OUT OF MY TUMMY!!
The whole food stamp program should be run like the WIC program. Only good, wholesome food is sold, no junk food. Pretty simple, huh?
"Good wholesome food..." According to whom? I realize that potato chips, candy, etc. are not wholesome.
But pretty soon the health nuts will take it further and have us all eating tofu and lettuce (excuse me, ORGANIC lettuce).
.
United States of America - home of the FREE...... n/k/a Chinamerica
And after all this hard work the Obama's will probably need a Vacation. North Korea woud be a nice spot.
Or maybe mountain climbing in pakistan !!
