Haiti is the basket case of the western hemisphere, no real government, no infrastructure, no real currency, no exports, (except charcoal they burned their forests down to make it, and erosion has wiped out agriculture), no banking system; it relies totally on outside help. it should become a UN protective and attempt to rebuild itself in about 50 years ! Most of the aid sent is still rotting on the docks, since the different fractions are fighting on who should control the distribution >
Most of the replies to this thread make me so sad. Everyone is so willing to write off the entire nation and millions of people. Blame it on them, blame it on their history, blame it on their leaders. Complain about how rough we have it here. But at the end of the day, the monumental suffering of innocent men, women and children knows no relief. If I were 20 years younger and not struggling to feed my family, I'd be there trying to teach them the basics of sanitation, education, and self-sufficiency. I pray to God someone with some compassion and energy will do what I cannot. And yes, I donate to US charities as well. The human race is struggling. We need to band together and stop thinking of this as US vs. THEM.

This sickens me. The richest country in the world is a hundred miles from the poorest one. We as Americans should be ashamed to let this happen literally in our own back yard. Screw Afghanistan, screw Pakistan, screw Korea. If we can't make things right here, we are never going to make things right anywhere else.
Why is it up tp America to make it right? We didn't cause the earthquake or the create the greedy, broken government. America has poured billions into Haiti with absolutely nothing to show for it in the way of better living conditions and economic conditions. It's a money pit, literally and we need to get out. We also need to stop sending money to Africa and any other place, as well as stop making "loans". It is China's money we are giving/loaning not America's and America's tax payers are paying the interest.
Oh, and BTW; we are not the richest country in the world any more, or haven't you been paying attention to the news? China and India are richer than us. We are rich in debt.

But we all all know that everyone is about 5 or 10 missed meals from total anarchy...thats why we shell out billions to people that don't live in the USA, and they in turn still hate our country.

How are you measuring your distance I have Haiti some 750 miles from Key West Florida. Are you forgetting the history of Haiti and the slave rebellion of the 1600's? AS a people they have been struggling ever since and are the poorest of the Caribbean. They just cannot govern themselves for whatever reason they expect handouts from others and will do nothing to help themselves. There is probably a sociological reason for this somewhere.

This is spot on, Illinois. If the 3rd world wants help then they need to play ball and stop breeding. All of your money that goes to food and medical aid help to keep their over sized populations alive. Populations that must now spill into your own countries because those countries are unlivable hell holes.
Why are they unlivable hell holes? Because there are too many people kept alive with outside support in countries that do not have the social infrastructure to make it work. In the middle ages in Europe people also bred uncontrollably but then plague and famine would cut down the population again. No one helped them. But because of that they were better able to develop instead of being overwhelmed by their own mass. Instead all this excess must now be exported to you.
Stop all food and medical aid to Africa and these little bannana republics. Let the population reach a naturally sustainable level and your own immigration issues will go away. You are funding your own inevitable doom.
That country is so grossly overpopulated and they live like wild animals. Mother nature is striking. Who could even live in those deplorable conditions. Those who died are the lucky ones. Death is much better than living there.

I agree on both sides. I have relatives that live there and they are amogst ofcourse the educated and elite, however to me Haiti is mimicking the Unites States where the rich makes all the money and the poor has a weight put on thier head to carry the rich. There is not a good education system available to the poor so they stay dumb and the rich wont teach the poor because if the poor gets educated who will wait hand and foot on the rich. SO yes they need to learn to help themselves but on the other hand they need someone to teach them.

Good Question the reason is they need a cheap workforce that is dependant on them. As sad as it sounds thats just how it is in many poor nations not just Haiti. It's done here... do you think you if you knew the secrets to wealth as the mega wealthy in this country do. Don't you think your financial situation would much better? You POS. If you are so intent to helping someone, load up your SUV with blankets and food and deliver them to a homeless shelter. the go to your bank and empty it out and donate that to the homeless Veterans and other less fortunate AMERICANS that protected your ass.
That would be a fine and humane suggestion, Hagie, but unfortunately it doesn't work like that. By keeping all these people alive artificially you make it nearly impossible for their countries to develop. Too many people that cannot be supported by their own societies level of development.
Not only that, due to the sheer population pressure in such hellish conditions a % will spill over into your country. So giving medical and food aid will inevitably result in you having mass 3rd world immigration that will destroy your own culture.

If any of you actually did any kind of fact checking, you'd know that the UN base has been dumping human waste into the water supply and not an "act of god." I read this article in the Time Magazine a few years ago about a mother somewhere in Africa being very upset that her 2 kids died... of the 8! The article was clearly written to solicit sympathy but really all it does is make me go glazy eyed. It is unreasonable to expect you to donate when they are just breeding uncontrollably. It is in everyones interest to not send aid as it will reduce their populations and poverty. Europe went through it...
If fact in the anti-colonial political parties in Zimbabwe, South Africa the policy was to encourage blacks to have as many kids as possible so that they may force out the whites with sheer numbers.
