if this tessalon is so dangerous for children, doesn't it make sense that it could be bad for an adult, i had it prescribed for me but ask the pharnacist to call the dr and get a substitute and they did.also i founfd it very expensive compared to another cough surup just as good.i go with an older tried and true drug, even if i have to argue with the dr. kids take whatever their parents give them ,so be very careful and ask a lot of questions. be mouthy, if it comes to that .your life and your childrens is at stake, and drugs have been known to kill.
I was prescribed Tessalon once for my cough and it did nothing to help. Fortunately, a better doctor then properly diagnosed my problem as "cough-variant asthma" and prescribed an albuterol inhaler - which worked.
This article needs to better explain what suddenly makes Tessalon safer for 10 year olds that is so dangerous for 9 year olds.
I was prescribed this medicine for a cough and it did not work for me and I wish I had known this about 2 years ago when it was prescribed to my 3 year old child. Thank goodness she did not have any troubles taking it.
Might help if we tested drugs on people, or the many viable alternatives out there which are truly safe and far more accurate than animal testing, which is not. But, that would cost the pharmaceutical companies big money, and they'd actually have to report their negative findings! Can't have that now, can we!
You just knew this crew at FDA was itchin to get at as many items that are over the counter as possible. They make the excuse of safety when in fact this stuff has been sold for decades. Control control control is needed when they are in the process of taking over health care. As for Rx drugs they have the long knives out using safety as the excuse.
I do agree that parents should keep all medications, as well as household cleaners and the like out of the reach of children, but I personally think that they should not produce any meds that have even the remote appearance of candy.
Sounds like many people here criticizing parents have do not have children of their own, and have forgotten the mischief they themselves got into when they were kids. The most attentive parents can still experience tragedies.
Couldnt agree more. That makes me sick to think that these people would say such things. Anyone with a 2 year old knows better. I would say I wish this could happen to them so they would know, but I don't wish anything like that on anyone. I have friends who have lost kids, and the amount of guilt that they have, even knowing it wasn't their fault, is so tremendous and it NEVER goes away. I have been fortunate as far as that goes, so far anyway, and I just pray for people like them to have a little tolerance of things they do not understand.
Just because I think it is funny that you people like to spew from the mouth like you are perfect (there is no perfect parent), I have this to say: First, I am a good mother, I am attentive, and as of yet none of my children have been seriously maimed or injured. ALL FOUR OF THEM. That being said, I have had to call poison control several times because of "accidental ingestion" of all kinds of things, not just medicine. The glow in the dark ooze from the glow sticks, the ooze from the balls out of machines, oh, and my personal favorite, table salt. Point being, my 2 year old daughter can climb ABOVE my stove to reach the medicine, can get into every nook and cranny of my house, and child proofed cabinets. She does it on a regular basis, as soon as she realizes I cannot see her. So, instead of criticizing parents, which I believe you all have done things being a parent you wish you could take back, including the common sense thing, maybe you should say "that is really sad that they had to learn one of lifes lessons so cruelly." All parents slip up. All parents make HUGE mistakes, only MOST get to rectify and learn from it. These poor parents didn't get that chance, and you people act like they are guilty of murder.
Before you all start trying to say I am a bad mother, why don't you call poison control and talk to them about how many kids accidentally ingested things that were in a cabinet in a locked room, and how many of those kids are under 4. I know these things because I just got off the phone with them yesterday, after my two year old got above my stove in a child proofed cabinet, and ate almost half a bottle of teething tabs. In 5 minutes while I was downstairs doing laundry. She is my third child, and I know how to child proof a house better than anyone.
So quit criticizing until you all actually know what you are talking about.
wowed by the force- Oh LUCKY YOU! I had one (out of three) of these extremely precociously agile children too! Yes, those with no or only one child have NO IDEA what real life is like in a multi-child busy household. Unless of course, ALL of their kids are the type to plop hypnotically in front of the tube. WE didn't have cable tv- only a video player so it was up to me. You just can't keep an eye on 3 (or 4) active, imaginative kids ALL MOMENTS of every day!
By the way- payback is pretty funny, mine now has a 20-month daughter of her own that is showing the precocious hyperactive trait. It's good to be the Grandma, you'll get there too!
HEHE!!! OH LUCKY US!! Yes, I was lucky in that I have the most even based older two and the most uneven based younger two (youngest only 6 mos), and I had it GREAT with older two. Best kids ever. Payback waited till I was sure that I was in the clear, and had all this down. Yeah Right!! My oldest two act like their father (he was killed when my youngest at the time was one), and my youngest two act like me AND their father (LUCKY ME AGAIN!). SCARY. I was one of those extremely precociously agile children, as well as their father. But, I knew all along that kids could do things that a 40 year old cant do, just thought I had it covered a little better. I learned real quick I WAS WRONG!! Parents are only in control as long as the kids want it, hehe. Luckily, most kids do want it. Thank god!!
BTW, I cant wait to be grandma! It needs to be atleast 15 years from now, if I have my way, but the only reason I quit having babies is the money thing. If I could afford it, I would adopt, too!!
Are you all fools??? Seriously, if this is not safe for children under the age of 10 and can cause death then how safe is it for you? Stop blaiming parents for letting their children become exposed to a toxic substance and ask yourself why you would want that crap in your own body! I say suffer a cold or cough naturally and stay the hell away from almost anything that has had FDA approval over the last 40 years.
Watch the evening news on any network, ABC, CBS or NBC and see how many of the commercials are drug commercials. It is close to 80%. From Erictile Dysfunction to Asprin, including all those cholesterol lowering drugs. Those commercials cost millions of dollars, and that cost is passed on to those who must buy them. I remember when you never saw a prescription drug advertized on television. That may be the first place to start health care reform. Ban the advertisement of prescription drugs.
It is pathetic that there is a need to remind parents to watch your kids and keep things out of their reach.

This was prescribed for me when I sick last year, and it worked very well.

I think that we should make this drug illegal. Pull it off the markets!
Cough 'sizzurp' is dangerous drug of choice for stars, kids ... cabinet or a special place in the house inaccessible to younger children.

stop selling drugs..with no shame and using pesticides that leave you messed up or dead, and the gov approves this legal crack..killers
As tragic as the deaths are, it's not the medicine, but the fools who leave medicine within reach of 2 year olds!
Yes, this article could apply to hundreds of prescription medications. The warnings and child-resistant containers are there for a reason.

Would like to see a bit more scientific information in the news article.
Highly unlikely that a 2 year old would have a heart attack=Myocardial Infarction.
