My chocolate lab ate a raw chicken quarter leg every day, raw bones and all, until he died at age 15 in August. He had beautiful white teeth and a gorgeous, shiny brown coat and would draw a crowd at dinner time to watch his special technique flipping the quarter leg in his mouth. I miss him dearly.
My dogs get raw turkey necks and chicken feet on a regular basis. They go ballistic over them. On occasion I get lamb shanks or shoulders, marrow bones or lamb breast (ribs).
Best treats you can give them. Not only are they great sources of protein but great sources of natural glucosamine and condroitin. They exercise the jaw and keep teeth clean and healthy. When they can't get RMBs they get bully sticks.
Who is the factory that slapped this company's label on this food? What other brands do they produce. I doubt this supermarket chain is running their own pet food factory.
A "well established name " means nothing. Science Diet, Eukanuba, ProPlan etc etc are the WORST QUALITY "foods" ( and I use that term EXTREMELY loosely) are the worst garbage you could ever feed your pets. Dogs and cats are not supposed to be eating CORN and by-products, mill floor sweepings, hulls, middlings, 4-D ( dead, diseased, dying, decayed ) meats, roadkill, rancid grease and whatever other refuse these companies are making their food from.. They are CARNIVORES with no use for nor the ability to process carbohydrates.
Dogs and cats should be fed a raw or meat based GRAIN FREE diet and certainly NOTHING that comes out of a bag or a can at your local supermarket or Walmart or 90% of the garbage that's sold at Petsmart/Petco or any big box or warehouse store.
I suggest you all take the time to read this and then start educating yourselves on how to feed your pets a BIOLOGICALLY SPECIES APPROPRIATE diet instead of poisoned food industry waste products.
Dogs and cats should be fed a raw or meat based GRAIN FREE diet and certainly NOTHING that comes out of a bag or a can at your local supermarket or Walmart or 90% of the garbage that's sold at Petsmart/Petco or any big box or warehouse store.
Can't the same be said about the owners? Better Fluffy is living in a trailer eatting McD's for cats then their alternative.
Enough people wish they could feed their children a meat based, raw unprocessed diet. Cut them a break because they feed Rover and puss some kibble.
That this food is not deadly is a reasonable expectation.
Several years ago, this is when I started on Newsvine; pet food recalls. Then, it was melamine that was shutting down cats and dogs kidneys, liver failure, etc... and it was expensive as well as the cheapest of the cheap involved. Well over 2,500 posts. Innova, Iams, Blue Buffalo, Diamond, Nutro... the list goes on and on.
Point is, although for a different reason and also denied for some time I would HIGHLY doubt this will be confined to Kroger's foods; mass produced, mass storaged, all from one major location and shipped..... likely, the tip of the iceburg for what's to come. However, I don't know how toxic or life threatening this type of fungus/poisoning is, so research is warranted.
But, again.... the buck's not going to stop here; similar to meat recalls due to mass storage/ monopolies. One bad steer equates to $200,000,000 in recalls. Ain't corporate mass production SOOO much better than individual, American capitalistic business????
the so called food safety bill will affect your choice of what you eat. it is being pushed through congress by big ag and coporate food makers, they want to make it so hard that you can't even grow your own foods
see no nais dot org for more info. this website also covers the travesty of the govt wanting people to file reports on every animal they own. ,
The real problem is that if any remember, the melamine poisoning from approx. 6 - 8 yrs. back entailed most every dog/cat food that was produced; canned and bagged alike. To think that this is confined to Kroger's foods is ridiculous and certainly goes beyond 'their brand'.
The original poisionings were from China, and even the most expensive and trusted were involved because basal ingredients were imported and stored together, later being 'ingredients' in just about any food made/produced . In this case, it's domestic and poor quality control, but again I believe it's going to go way past brands listed.
There should be a recall on so many other pet foods being as they contain something called meat-by products which is any dead mammal, like when your prets are put to sleep by the vet they are brought to the rendering plant where they go, bag, flea collars and all into a big soup.. road kill also added. My husband saw this when he worked on some electrical for the rendering plant less than one mile from our house...we often smelled the soup...he was sick for 3 days.
Ever since I lost my Boston Terrier to a "top of the line established name brand" dog food I switched to all-natural, human-grade oven baked. I get it through Flint River...dogs love it, thrive on it and I don't have to wonder if they're eating poison. Do some research on commercial pet food and you may think again on what you purchase. No one in the commercial business is watching them and they'll cut corners wherever and whenever they can. Also, the process that is used to prepare the "food" strips it of all nutrients...they have to add back to it and that's always iffy.
Flint River is only a step above crap. It's right down there w/Natural Balance.
How do I know ? I was a distributor and now I"m a pet nutritionist. There are MANY better quality foods out there. That's why I don't sell it anymore. The more I studied the more I learned about what dog's and cat's SHOULDN'T eat. #1 is GRAINS.
Once again our pet's food is contaminated! Kroger obviously does not have strict guide lines for quality inspections from their suppliers to safe guard against these recalls. Also note that it is Krogers private label brand ( inferior quality to the name brands we trust). This is why I would never buy grocery store brand pet food!
And what are YOU feeding ? Some overpriced junk like Science Diet or Pro Plan. ( HINT: they're all made out of the same CRAP as your grocery store pet food .... by products, diseased meats, contaminated grains and anything else that's been rejected for human consumption ) Oh..and by the way...if you're not feeding food made with HUMAN GRADE USDA inspected ingredients... your food... BY LAW... must be "denatured" so it cannot re-enter the human food supply. Denaturing requires dousing the ingredients in CARBOLIC ACID or CREOSOTE....both CARCINOGENIC CHEMICALS.
ALL those responsible for this pet food fiasco should immediatly be incarcerated, pets lives should be as important as a human life, Greed from a corporate level should be delt with immediate incarceration!
they want tell u where the product was made at (CHINA?) THE new normal is that products like coke - pepsi and most products made now will say on the side of the can made by independent contractors for the distrubuting for ckor pepsi so they aint liable for selling cheap products and u want know that it wasnt made in usa
I had a friend who didn't think the food he gave his dog made any difference. "Just a dog," etc. etc. Dog was put down when he was 4 years old for overaggressiveness as well as with various serious ailments including eye, hip, and kidney problems.
Trust me folks, the food you give your pets matters. It is because of the attitude many pet owners have (just a dog/cat/whatever) that manufacturers basically pile in tainted garbage for dogs to eat. And yes, better food = more money but if it costs you $30 a month vs. $15 a month to feed your dog, it's not a terribly large sacrifice, especially when you are responsible for an animal's well being.
Better food doesn't really cost more money. That's an ILLUSION. Better food is only expensive "up front". If you break it all the way down to a "cost per serving" basis you can feed a 50 lb dog a quality food like say Wellness Core or Innova EVO... 33# bag for $60 ( and there are plenty of superior foods like Nature's Variety Instinct, Merrick BG or Canidae Grain Free you can get for about $50/bag ) for only $25 more a year than feeding the same dog say ProPlan or similar @ $30-35 for a 40 lb bag.
Not only is the dog getting FAR FAR superior nutrition from REAL USDA HUMAN GRADE meat, NO grains, NO by-products, NO chemicials, NO antibiotics, NO artificial ANYTHING.....you save thousands more by not having to purchase Flea products, over-the-counter products for eye, ear, teeth, breath, skin, coat, digestive and other problems.
My dogs & cats have NEVER had to see a vet for anything other than their rabies shots and to get "fixed". They've NEVER had a flea, rarely a tick, their coats are full, shiny and soft, their skin is healthy, they smell CLEAN all the time, they have plenty of energy and are probably in better health than most humans.
THE EXTRA $ is worth it for your dog/cat to have a better quality life, better health, better attitude and longevity.
Aflatoxin comes in several varieties all are lethal. You could have one kernel of corn in a million kernels with the toxin and once you grind it up it can affect the entire batch and you will never know what bag it is in. All of Kroger'spet foods are private labeled for them buy some very large pet food companies. These companies make the very high end and the very low end. By-products is not dead or road kill animals. By-products are things like liver, kidney, spleen, lungs etc. You need to read the label and look at the first 5 ingredients and that will tell you all you need to know about how good you pet food is. If the majority are grains then you have a grain based pet food. Just do not get caught up in the hype as most pet food companies stretchthe truth. Those that claim to be all natural to 100% organic. Most of it is hype,I know I created Nature's Recipe pet foods, which created Lamb and Rice among many diets which where naturally preserved and the Lamb was grass fed. This started the whole craze in pet foods several companies are legit but most are misleading you.
CLUE: Cats and Dogs have NO USE FOR GRAINS. Neither of them have digestive systems that are able to process grain or carbohydrates.
SOLUTION: Feed your dogs and cats a BIOLOGICALLY APPROPRIATE DIET... aka MEAT PROTEIN w/small amounts of fruits/veggies/herbs for vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, antioxidants and make sure they take fish or salmon oil and flax oil supplements for healthy heart, brain, skin and coat.
When I was a teenager, I worked on a hog farm for my uncle. Anything that turned up dead on the farm went to the pet food plant. I remember going along for the ride one week and what I saw was not fit for consumption by any animal in any way, shape or form. Dead cows, horses, pigs, etc. that had been lying in the heat for way too long. It was gross.
Oh no, here we go again, what the heck is up with pet food safety? First the Chinese try to poison our pets, now we are poisoning them. I think these people that are so lax with safety should be make to eat some of the tainted food, as part of their job. If my cat get sick, I will be pissed.
Where is the truth of who is responsible for this? China again? Our whole food industry needs fixed. People need to find another job for not doing what they get paid to do, keep us safe.
I agree, grains are not natural for dogs to digest and Jeffrey, you are right, you need to READ the ingredients in your pets foods. Also, don't go by what you vet may say is okay...they are getting PAID to push those foods. Science diet is not good and neither are most things you buy at a grocery store or Walmart for that matter. You need to get educated and read labels. Also, if your dog eats foods that are high in proteins and some veggies, they don't need to eat so much....give the bad type of dogfood and they want more and more of it...just like when people eat too much fast food, you crave it and can't get enough of it.
Stopped buying pet food in stores a couple of food recalls ago. Food these 2 books that not only have easy recipes but my pets are healthier. Woofing it Down for dogs and Lapping it Up for cats. I believe the author is Patricia O'Grady.
It just goes to show that you should spend the extra few dollars to get the higher quality stuff. Always use added caution when buying wet food and avoid cheap dry food brands.
This is probably why our dogs all lived to ripe old ages... they eat mostly people food with a few canned /bagged treats thrown in for good measure every once in awhile.. of course the downside is we have to eat holding our plates up in the air, and we have to eat very quickly while the 2 dogs and cat circle around, salivating and getting ready to pounce.. but hey they are healthy...spoiled rotten.. but healthy...
where do I find the lot numbers on the dogfood that has been recalled?
Why are you feeding your dog this CRAP and not real food ?
My chocolate lab ate a raw chicken quarter leg every day, raw bones and all, until he died at age 15 in August. seriously , if you love your pets ..you wouldnt buy processed pet food ..always fresh cooked meals from home , for a happy healthy animal
I was under the impression that table food was bad, not enough nutrients.. but it sounds like a good idea, my cat does love chicken nuggets.
I wonder if they make a pet "cookbook" surely they do.
DaveM,
My cats also love chicken...I have to wrap my chicken bones in four layers of bags, or they tear it apart.

When are the greedy morons going to learn that corn, wheat, gluten, along with artificial colors, flavors don't belong in dog food.
Aha, I knew it. I thought it tasted kind of funny. Guess I should spend my SS dollars on better stuff.
