It is not just cheese that smells rotten... Govt. passes law to regulate very, very small farms...then recall...maybe sabotage...Oh, but that only happens in communist countries...Right? What about socialist countries?
The small farms are exempt from the regulations, as long as they don't make anyone sick. She would have had to comply under thew new regulations because her cheese did make people sick. I am personally all for access to good quality foods, from a farmers market or from the grocery store. I am glad that the large argi companies of the US will have to comply with regulations and I am also glad that the smaller companies get an exemption UNLESS the make people sick. Obviously there are more details about who gets the exemption, but it's not socialist/communist like you imply.
I do feel for her, believe me. Using raw cows milk, raw goats milk, or other unpasteurized products is a huge risk, and people unfortunately got sick. Part of this is 'consumer beware' as there are risks to consuming these types of products. She filled a need obviously with her handcrafted cheeses from raw products; and what we saw with people getting sick were the consequences that may happen.
Lets see if the inspector tests any cheese for E. coli. Just not seeing something, is on thing, but if the packaged cheese does have E. coli, that's another. Amazing she went 8 years without a problem. The sick people "could have" sliced the cheese after NOT washing their hands after a trip to the bathroom.
I have never heard of Bathrooms in people's houses having E. Coliin them... I do no they have plenty of Bacteria, but E. Coli would be a rare one...
This is a Typical small business owner... I hate Rules... I have always done it this way... And I would rather loose my INCOME, then comply...
Hormel used to say the Exact same thing... My Grandfather died from sloppy practices that Hormel had made him apply in his daily tasks...
They shutdown Hormel and made them follow the best practices... They seem stupid until you get E.Coli...Then it seems Smart to follow certain practices...
I would hate to see her Close...But It is clear...the sickness id traced to the business...she Has to see the Writing on the Wall... Clean Up... or Close Up..
Just a note for Ron--E.coli is naturally found in the lining of your gut, and it happens that ~50% of your fecal matter is made up of the bacteria. So not washing your hands after a "number two" and then touching food would theoretically transfer E.coli from your bum to your food. Delicious, eh?
The Report... Tested the Floor of the Cheese Plant... E.Coli found!!
Wash your Hands.. Is one of the Basic and ENFORCED BEST PRACTICES...and the PLANT is run down.... Second Problem that the WOMEN denies is a PROBLEM...
Your Point is Fact.. BUT it is the PROCESS that contaminated the CHEESE... NO MATTER how you wish to Look at it...
She is WRONG for not wanting to Understand that this is Science that traced the E. Coli... IT was Found... She was NOT willing to realize Best Practices... Her Intransigents is the Problem... Not the Governments...
Just because it NEVER HAPPENED in the Past...Does not Mean IT CAN NEVER HAPPEN... Period...
Ron-- relax, I was just trying to educate you on the frequency of E.coli in bathrooms in general because you said you'd never heard of it being there before:
"I have never heard of Bathrooms in people's houses having E. Coliin them... I do no they have plenty of Bacteria, but E. Coli would be a rare one..."
There was no opinion either way on the cheese plant issue.
e. coli OH:157 is the strain that can cause severe disease in humans - generally comes from cows. Usually not what is excreted from otherwise healthy humans...but can still cause an upset stomach for sure if ingested.
"My argument then was that I have never made anybody sick in 30 years."
What a stupid assumption. People get food poisoning all the time. From the CDC: "We estimate that foodborne diseases cause approximately 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths in the United States each year."
This cheese may have caused many sicknesses over the years without being traced back to her business. Unless there is a widespread outbreak, it is very hard to find a pattern leading to the source. This is a low quantity food business that gets shipped over a wide area.
Food poisoning may take several days to develop. Try to find the culprit among any number of restaurants, delis, or supermarket bought home prepared food eaten in several of the past days. People don't track down everywhere they ate and tell that business they got sick because they really don't know who's fault it is.

They should try this tack with the oil and pipeline companies...actually make the DO something about safety instead of just talking about it.
