My great grandmother who lived to 98 once told me that " there are two kinds of people in this world. The fat, happy old farts. And the Skinny, Miserable dead." She then pointed around the room at all the 80+ fat old gits around the room and said. "The skinny ones aint out joggin kid!" In the end I think she died of boredom. She lived on steak, mash potato and mushy peas. If a healthy diet gave you a longer life and she was on it, she would be 136 years old now.
I don't live in the stroke belt, but when I travelled to Georgia, I noticed that the diet has a lot of fats from other sources like fried eggs and bacon - lots of bacon - buscuits and gravy with everything. I think thats whats killing people - all the other fat-bearing foods from breakfast through dinner.
I've been eating fried fish all through my life. People in Ireland eat lots of fried fish and their rates of heart attack and stroke are much lower than the USA.
The whole point to this "Finding" is to refuel the Left with their "we know whats good for you, and you don't" attitude. First they attack Bacon, then just plain old Fat on cuts of Meat( No fat, no Flavor, and skinless boneless chicken proves that), then go after my Burgers and how I'm supposed to cook the foods I eat, then what I wear, drive, do with MY income, and who to support. Is there NO END to the Left "Knowing better?" I am the only person that knows whats good for me, what I want, and where I get the things I like. I will only use these articles for fodder to prove my point that the Left only wants to dictrate EVERYONES'S personal life, but they can stay out of mine.
Did you happent o notice that the study was done in the Predominately Black South, where people have enjoyed these foods for centuries? Did you notice it left out any mention of Pork chops, Roasts, Ribs, Mashed 'taters, gravies, sweets? Only the Leftist next target, FRIED FOOD, was mentioned. Bad for you? Maybe, but it sure tastes a lot better than Steamed or Boiled, and more fun to eat.
In my area of the South, a fish dinner typically consists of fried catfish, deep-fried hush puppies, french fries and cole slaw swimming in mayonnaise and sugar. So maybe the culprit isn't just the fried fish.
The "Stroke Belt" region also consumes lots of fried chicken and other fried foods. Did this study case-control for people of similar race and levels of obesity in other regions?
There is a lot of obesity out there. It may be more obvious in the South, but when I have been up north on summer study trips, obesity is a problem there, too. The UP of Michigan, Wisconsin, and upstate NY are some obesity hot spots that are definately out of the "Southern Fried Stroke Belt". Superior, Wisconsin and Herkimer, NY come to mind as having some pretty hefty folks sitting down at Perkins.
So now is "eating a poor diet by CHOICE" going to be the new disability the Lazy will swarm to use to get more cash for designer clothes and going Clubbing? Probably, because under Liberal policies, no one can be held responsible for their own actions, they are ALL victims of "Society". However, they, the Fried food eaters, create their own Society, and therefore the Taxpayer will pay more for the "Defect".
i know that the quicker one gets to the hospital after a stroke, the better one's chances are at getting better.. I did not see anything that mentions that.
Ray-1033782.....You are really quite silly, I would rather assume that you are making jokes, as if you are thinking clearly I have never heard such nonsense in my life....Things will never change!
mrsmajor----- I jest not!!!!!! ANYTHING that the Left's "Science" happens to come up with by "Financed" studies, where the payer gets the desired results, will become a defect in Society, and will therefore qualify for "Special"circumstance due to the differences in the racial make-up of those eating fried foods, and they can't be held to make their own choices. The Left feels that ANY circumstance, especially choice, should be held as a symbol of the poor ghetto rats and bangers being suppressed. They don't accept responsibility for their diet, but certainly will claim that Heart condition they knew they would get for the cash benefits. When I lived in Charlotte, NC, I did a personal test of who received free Foods from charity. To include toys, and clothes also. At 7 different "Giveaway" Locations, the same 16 cars, with the same driver and helpers, arrived at ALL 7 locations for the "Goodies". Those that needed in reality were being ripped off by the greedy, as the greedy took those items and sold them at flea markets and on the street. Very nice, but after all, they have a "right" to collect?
This is the same city where the Dept. of Social Services chairman stated the fact that "We know about 20% of the receipients of the Service were known Illegal immigrants, but She could say NOTHING". The only time the Dept. could say something is when ICE served the Illegal with deportation papers. How in the Hell does one Agency prevent another from enforcing the law? Expain that clearly, please.
Helping those that NEED the help, if LEGAL, is fine, but, when Welfare, Baby Mamas and Baby Daddies become the family business for generations, then yes, I get very angry. It isn't the general American public approving these giveaways, it's the Left allowing the Law to be broken, and all at Taxpayer expense.
Happy now, lefties, because your giveaways and lack of oversight has made a mockery of the programs that are there to actually help those in need, just to feed the greed of those that don't need it and use them for a "side hustle" in Ghetto terms?
This is much more prevelant than the Programs will admit, and it needs to be fixed.
Fried fish? We have bigger problems than Fried fish. But not one single Politician will say so, for fear of being labled Racist.
I think this is a bunch of BS. Of course fried foods are bad for us, regardless of where we live. Fried foods clog arteries. I live in the northeast, am 44 years old, and have had two strokes -- fortunately minor (if there is such a thing). Strokes occur due to stress, high blood pressure, and weak articles in your brain. It's that simple. Lower your BP, lower your stress, and lower your stroke risk. Stop with this fried fish crap. Just my opinion.
Agreed. Why did they have to say fish? It's been well documented that lack of exercise and anything fried(fish, chicken, steak, donuts, ect) will lead to a higher risk of a stroke and heart attack. I guess they needed to add a specific to make it "new news".
I wonder if this applies only to fish pre-oiled by BP, or is this for frying in general? :-) Just kidding.
The focus on frying is an old-tyme Southern thing. Inland from the coast, frying seems to be the ONLY way fish is cooked. This especially applies to those places where CATFISH is consumed (that's fresh water fish). Along the coast in true seafood country, grilling, broiling, etc. are much more common methods of cooking a meal (at home or in restaurants). Beware of the cream/butter sauces, however.
Just like anything else in the diet, it's a matter of training yourself to enjoy a variety of foods and cooking methods. Frying is easy, but it is the high fat choice.
Pensacola....there is nothing better than the grilled catfish at Crackerbarrel. It doesn't have to be fried to taste good, in fact, it tastes better grilled. I love fish, I just don't like it fried because all you taste is the batter.
Don't kid yourselves people, eating animal products of ANY kind is not heart healthy. Animals are the only source of cholesterol and it is elevated cholestorol that creates heart disease. Fish may be slightly healthier because of the omega-3s, but they are loaded with cholesterol (especially farmed fish) and in most cases toxic ("wild" fish) because of pollution.
There is healthy and unhealthy cholesterol, not all cholesterol is bad. Our teeth are the teeth of omnivores, we have both grinding (molars) and tearing (incisors/canines) teeth. We are meant to consume both animal and plant matter to survive. The animal dies to feed us, that is the circle of life. It has been that way for millennial. I am a pagan, a nature worshiper, and I love animals and have quite a few pets. I still eat meat, because as a pagan, I recognize that we are meant to be this way, and that we are meant to play our part in the great cycle of birth, death, and rebirth.
How right you are. Another feature of humans---our eyes point/focus forward---an obvious feature of omnivores/carnivores in the animal world----cats, dogs, eagles, hawks, sharks, 'cudas, etc.
--we have shorter intestines than herbivores, and no additional stomachs for breaking down plant nutrients like cellulose
--we can't personally manufacture all amino acids like herbivores, so we need to get complete proteins from animals that do
--Vegans fare worse in cardiovascular disease studies than partial vegetarians, not to mention they MUST supplement their diet for nutrients like B12 or else they'll suffer from deficiencies
--Many studies that control for other healthy-eating behaviors (like limiting meat portions, eating lots of veggies, not eating junk) find that supposed health benefits associated with vegetarianism disappear--it's really the lack of produce, oversized portions of high-fat meats, and processed and fried foods that account for why "typical" meat eaters fare worse than vegetarians.
and everything the good people of this thread have already mentioned about occasional meat eating being natural.
"They do not fry their fish in lard over there in the south they do"
Wrong. You are talking about a frying method that is very, very rarely used in the south, or anywhere else, in many years. Oil is the most commonly used medium.
I do not fry my fish or anything else in lard. I love fried fish and fried chicken. Good southern food. And don't forget the hush puppies and biscuits too! Yum, good eats.
Blacks are the cursed race when it comes to healthy lifestyles. As a healthcare worker I am amazed at the rate of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity I see in these people. However, the white people in America, follow a lifestyle not much better. If we look at the proliferation of fast food restaurants and childhood obesity that has tripled since the 60's - the future looks dismal.
This was , indeed, an interesting study and I hope one that opens many peoples eyes, to the changes that must be made in their diet. However, diet alone will not help - lets include regular fitness programs and target the children.
One pound of fat reflects 3500 calories. The approximate expenditure of calories to burn 100 calories is to walk one mile...............so, is that extra cookie worth the calories? Conversely, a 30 min daily walk on the treadmill will burn close to 2 pounds a month - or 24 pounds a year. What a great gift to give our family!
Just hang on. With the proliferation of fast food restaurants in urbanized areas of China (not to mention the high rates of smoking), those "one child" generations are going to be the last of their family lines. Expect a health-care crisis to grip China over the next 10-25 years.
Blacks are not the cursed race, and don't say things like that if you don't want reponses. EVERYONE IN THE SOUTH has been told that science is gobbledegook and we shouldn't listen to it, even if our families are prematurely dying. Black people are not all hockin' down gravy-smothered pork chops while sitting on our butts. Yes, I resent the implication that Black people, who "must" have all these wonderful grocery stores with bitter melon and papaya, would CHOOSE to have fried crap all the time. If grocery stores would be more concerned with societal health than making a buck, and if all kids were taught to garden instead of tweet, EVERYONE would be healthier. Black people don't prefer to be unhealthy, especially since we don't all have jobs and can't afford healthcare. Be quiet.
@Whatever - When you go to the grocery store, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to buy the food that is right for you and your family. Sure the store might sell unhealthy food, but ultimately it comes down to the decisions you make. Same with fast food restaurants too. They sell a product and it is our responsibility to choose whether to eat there or not. If you dont want to get fat and unhealthy, then dont eat there. Simple as that.
It angers me when people that are not black try to discuss Black Americans' habits without proper knowledge. Most black people live in urban areas and in urban areas, the cost of living is higher than non-urban areas. This especially relates to food cost.
The national average cost of a gallon of milk is more expensive than a 2L of Coca Cola, and the national average cost of a Big Mac is cheaper than a 1/2 lb of chicken. If you're working-class, it's cheaper to eat fast food than go to grocery store. Hence, health problems. Work on making organic and healthy produce more affordable, and then you'll sound less ignorant and bigoted.
I cry B.S. on the food desert argument for many people of all races. I'm not the food police, but I do tend to pay attention to what other people tend to buy when I'm waiting in line at the grocery store. (It's more interesting than looking at tabloid headlines, although the store where I do most of my shopping doesn't have periodicals at the checkouts.) I see people loading their carts with prepared garbage that costs far more than what it would cost to put more healthful foods in that same cart. The better foods would be more filling and nourishing; most could be made with little effort. Produce doesn't have to be expensive when you buy (gasp!) conventionally grown fruits and vegetables, frozen vegetables, and/or canned produce packed in juice or lower salt vegetables (regular ones can be rinsed to help rid them of excess salt). I volunteered at a food bank in Pittsburgh for several years and many of the fruits and vegetables went begging, as most who came through our doors wanted the prepared garbage that they were used to eating. Unfortunately, their children are learning poor eating habits as ignorance begets ignorance. My heart aches for those who truly live in urban food deserts with only convenience store foods available to them.
Poor people want the prepared stuff cuz its also costs money to have a kitchen. One really weird thing I remember from the 3rd world is how everybody ate even simple food at the takeout vendors. Then I realized how much its costs to own pots, pans, fuel, water, etc just to cook for yourself. At the really low end, its cheaper to eat takeout (competition keeps the prices low) and the US equivalent is processed food.
maybe its not the fish it self but the amount of salt and oil used whe frying the fish, nothing like a good spicy fried fish! salt of course leads to hypertension etc.. and the oil used cholesterol and heart disease..Â
Salt leads to hypertension only if the person's genetic heritage has made him/her susceptible. If your ancestry includes people from highly leached environments, such as the Amazon Basin, yes, salt will raise your BP. If your ancestors made their livelihood from the sea, salt will usually have little effect, and restriction can make one susceptible to heat stroke.
The last study I read found only about 25% of the people in the U.S. to be salt reactive.
It continues to amaze me with all of the scare tactics that are put out there. Okay, I can understand that it is not great to fry your fish, but lets not blame so much of this for causing strokes....There are so many other factors in our diets that do not help this situation....
Maybe it is junk science? Cause and effect is often ignored when a project is begun with operator bias. What was the intended purpose of the study? Why was it deemed necessary? Were all other causes considered? Etc.....
Read, "Betrayers of the Truth: Fraud and Deceit in the Halls of Science"
Spike, you know what you're talking about. Junk science is s.o.p. for epidemiologists gone wild. Ignore the other causative factors. Think EMF and powerlines. Idiots.
LARD is the name of it and man does it flavor fried foods. I eat fried fish hushpuppies and fries with fish i catch cooked in lard but no more than once a month I only eat steak once a month also. Get out of the boat start a fire cook up some fish and fried potatoes in lard or bacon grease its heaven. Plate of perch and potatoes has less saturated fat and calories than a whopper or a big Mac.
I wouldn't doubt it one bit. We spend the summers in W. North Carolina and when you go out to reasonably priced restaurants, almost everything on the menu is fried. We eat at home a lot when we're there because we know the food is not prepared in a healthy manner.
There are also a lot of obese people in those areas that don't seem to care that they are slowly killing themselves.
Logdump, don't forget the fried candy bars and fried cheese.
Kaara, I am not sure where you go in Western NC, but there are many very healthy dining establishments in the NC mountains. The biggest problem I see is the portion served to one person that could easily feed 3 or 4 people, resulting in over eating leading to obesity and diabetes.
I always like to know who is funding these studies. This one has General Mills name attached to it. Makes you wonder what their interest was. They don't sell fish. If this article is accurate, the study cannot be considered "scientific" due to the many variables not mentioned. I doubt that fried fish 2 times a week is a greater factor than fried food the other 19 meals of the week.
I think we need to ban all of the Busch-era fried fish in the world. It's Busche's fault, everything that is wrong with America. He invented fried fish, didn't he???? I'll bet there all Republician strokes too. No liberal strokes around me Bah ha Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha Happy Christmas.........
Gemini John: What does this comment have to do with anything being discussed here? And how is it possible that you misspelled the name of the previous President not only once but twice in one paragraph? I mean he was President for 8 years; you had to have seen his name at least a couple of times in the news, huh?
I've eaten king salmon at least three times a week for over 30 years(I catch them for a living). My bad cholesterol is way low, and my good cholesterol is very high. If you don't fry fish it is good for you. Fry anything and your hurting your health. The south fries everything.
I live in Mississippi and there is fried everything here so I don't think you can necessarily point to fish being the fried offender. In Mississippi you can get a delicious meal at most the gas stations where everything is fried except the greens which are likely cooked in lard. I am from up north but I must say food from the south is delicious although generally not very healthy.
That is the catch isn't it? Fried food does taste great. The problem is moderation, as in all things, alcohol included. But the liberal midset of our culture doesn't allow for moderation. I'm not giving up fried fish becasue of stuf like this. Eat what you like in moderation and you'll be better off in the long run.
Is it some sort of cult-like mindset to be that political? This has nothing to do with political party affiliation; it's an article about health and food. No liberal group is telling you "Don't eat what you want"; just try to avoid too many fatty foods. Stop being a fanatic and inserting politics in every bloody thing!
we were just discussing this earlier. Appears to be a frequently, "Good Ole Boy" Republican habit of bringing politics into random discussions having nothing to do with politics.
If it were anything other than politics, it would sound absurd and no one would take it seriously. I used to have a friend with a pantyhose fetish that used to bring women's hosiery into every discussion...but, no one thought him "insightful" or attempted to branch off his topic changes at least.
To be fair, it's usually the Good Ole Boy Republicans or the Marxists (on the left). And I mean real Marxists, the ones that call themselves that, not every random liberal that some of the Good Ole Boys call Marxists.
Omega 3's are destroyed by any heat, like even room temperature, I recall reading in a few places. In fact, fish oil and omega 3 oils sold separated by the bottle state to not cook with these-- only to use for salad dressing. The Japanese have derived the benefits only because traditionally they have eaten their fish raw. Of course sometimes, though not most of the time, you'll get bacterial contamination.
I was in New Jersey recently and obesity seems rampant there. Men, women, and especially children. Whats the deal with that? I didn't stay long enough to eat many meals so maybe someone knows. Please know that I don't want to piss off any Sopranos et al. Just asking.
Blacks, whites, hispanics, asians.... let's face it-- All Americans do in their spare time is watch the @!$%#in TV. And on Sundays, they watch other steroid laced fatboy 'athletes' run up and down a football field, and these so-called 'athletes' are ill, sick or dead by age 55. Americans self caged animals who eat fish, chicken, etc--- animals that are just as ill as they are.
As a two-time stroke survivor, I can attest that the causes extend far beyond the arterial sewage left behind by fats and cholesterol. I'll bet those in the stroke belt drink a lot of whole milk, eat a lot of eggs... just like the majority of the rest of our population. Life is short and precious no matter how you fiddle with the math and maps, so eat what you want, laugh, cry and live every minute with a great passion for more. Cheers!
51 yr old male...never had a stroke...love fried food but also love veggies. I'm not stupid...I know some of the stuff I eat is bad for me, but I DO NOT want to live forever...I'll enjoy myself...like my dad said (died of cancer at 80) "live to eat, not eat to live"
As usual for studies that make it to the news, no details.
No breakdown as to other foods eaten or not eaten, amounts eaten, age of subjects, their general health, and by race, since blacks are more prone to strokes...and all the other multitudes of variables. Junk science indeed.
So someone dies of a stroke at age 70 from eating fried fish and someone else dies at age 70 for another reason from something else. What's the difference? We will all die someday. The people who write these articles assume "healthy" people who eat what they are "supposed to" will never die. If it's not from something, it will be from something else. My God, just let them eat their fried fish and quit the scare tactics!
Everyone knows it's not the fish but the frying of the fish. Fish is healthy for the heart but frying anything is unhealthy.
That's not true. It's the oil that makes the difference. Fry in macadamia oil and your heart will be fine.
sounds fishy to me
SUSHI, the answer to all the problems.. HOOYAA
Right along with the parasites associated with some types of fish. And don't forget the food poisoning that accompanies many raw dishes.
Don't forget to eat ginger with your sushi. That kills all the parasites.
But nothing but moving to the Southern hemisphere will protect you from the Mercury and Dioxins ... face it, life in North America is doomed ...
My great grandmother who lived to 98 once told me that " there are two kinds of people in this world. The fat, happy old farts. And the Skinny, Miserable dead." I'm moving to the South! All this stuff sounds delicious !

I never had high B/P in my life! I had a stroke, and it was do to stress. Not from eating fried fish, believe me!
Also, weak articles on line.
This article fails to make any credible connection between eating fried fish and the "Stroke Belt" mystery. MSNBC usually has much better articles.

silvershadows
Gotta give you credit for having a reasonable approach to meat. Breath of fresh air in all the anti-meat nonsense.
Most meat, poultry and fish were healthy food until they became corn fed at least according to one article I read a while back.
silvershadows,
How right you are. Another feature of humans---our eyes point/focus forward---an obvious feature of omnivores/carnivores in the animal world----cats, dogs, eagles, hawks, sharks, 'cudas, etc.

If you want to get all caveman about it; we survived on veggies, we prospered on occasional meat.
How is the stroke incidence in England? They eat plenty of fried fish...
dumb article
They do not fry their fish in lard over there in the south they do
So it's not so much the fried fish but what you fry it in that's the issue.
Not just diet, folks. It's lifestyle.
I think ignorance of healthy eating curses any race.
I think you hit on a factor for stroke with the salt. Fried food just calls out for salt. Salt does drive up the blood pressure.
As an aside, I love watching the Food Network and I think all the cooks use way too much salt.
Maybe it is not the fish itself...but the amount we eat. Choose to eat less, maybe that would help.

"It's called "science".
Don't worry about it. Go watch TV."
I watch TV, and I also read.
Idiots.
Could it have anything to do with Obesity, Fried chicken, Fries and everything cooked in something called Fatback (Pork fat)
Logdump, sounds like real good eats. Enjoy!
I built for comfort, not speed!
It got real silly when they started frying pickles or breaded deep fried bacon
General Mills use to own Red Lobster; Red Lobster serves fried fish. Maybe General Mills regrets selling Red Lobster to Darden Restaurants.
Now I want some fried fish
With fries !!
you said it. I love fish cooked in any manner, but a good meal of fish and fries once in a while is great.
and fried CHEESECAKE!!
I would kill for a side of fries right now.
You forgot the sweet tea with half a pound of sugar per glass.
@charlieb123
we were just discussing this earlier.
Raw fish? maybe, but it better be really fresh. Can't buy that in the store.
Blacks? What is this 1970?
I was in New Jersey recently and obesity seems rampant there. Men, women, and especially children. Whats the deal with that? I didn't stay long enough to eat many meals so maybe someone knows. Please know that I don't want to piss off any Sopranos et al. Just asking.
You may be close to the answer -- pasta. Another one of my favorite foods.
On Sundays, I am busy with the NY Times crossword puzzle and the one in my local paper. No time for TV or football.
