Many of the countries on the continent of Africa, including Sudan, discriminate against, imprison, and murder their citizens who happen to be homosexual. For the Carter Center, UN, or any country, organization, or individual to provide any aid or assistance to those countries is a travesty. Let the countries take the scant resources they have and spend it on improving the lives of all their people, not on discriminating against some of them. Until those repulsive, bigoted countries change their despicable ways, and learn to treat all citizens the same, they should be boycotted and treated as pariah nations. Jimmy Carter should hang his head in shame for supporting the oppression, imprisonment, and murder of so many innocent people.
That sounds like an excuse to do nothing.
Carter has done a lot of good in his lifetime - he's one of the great men in history.

Just because someone is a good man, does not mean that automatically are a good President. President Carter has done a lot of good since he left office, but he was a HORRIBLE President.

Jimmy is eradicating a terrible disease. It has nothing to do with the politics of any one nation. The scourge has affected all of mankind He is to be applauded for all of his great work.
First, "Jimmy" is not eradicating this parasite. It will exist in animals and will only stop infecting Humans when sources of affordable and reliable clean water are implemented. Something that is highly improbable in Africa today. So to use the term 'Eradicated' is just plain factually incorrect.
Second, "Jimmy" was an abominable President, his last couple of days as President a symbol of the totality of his term. Good thoughts and intentions are no substitute for real action. He failed on the last point miserably and that is fact, no matter what the Nobel Committee says.

The other side of the story is that Jimmy Carter is in bed with the Arab/ Moslem military dictatorship in Sudan which perpetrated genocide and is still killing and oppressing the African residents of Sudan. It may have been better for the Sudanese if Mr Carter had used the money to help bring freedom and democracy to Sudan rather than wining and dining with the monsters who murdered hundreds of thousands of Sudanese and driven millions off of their land. Jimmy Carter is arguably the worst president of the 20th century, but certainly the worst ex-president we ever had.

Helping people should not be political. Jimmy Carter, like many other people has done both good and bad things. This is a good thing. He has not done it alone. Other organizations, both secular like UNICEF and WHO, and religious medical missions have had a part in various countries over many years, as well as various governments (not all of which were nice democracies either). At one time this worm was found in many other parts of Africa, as well as parts of Asia, including India. Some places wells have helped with this and other parasites. Other places, filters like mentioned in this article are the best option.
But, no matter what you think of Jimmy Carter, of the government of Sudan, if you were a person unable to work because of this, if you were a man, woman, or child whose health, and possibly life, were at risk because of this, to eradicate this worm would be a good thing. The World Bank says the economies of countries where this worm has been eliminated have improved greatly.
For the record, I remember the Carter presidency as a disaster economically. Since then, I think he has both said and written some pretty anti-semetic stuff, and I know of several million Baptists who wish he would go ahead and leave their denomination instead of criticizing the views of the majority of the members and then threatening to leave it over and over. And I think his anti-Bush statements were in poor taste, because most former presidents usually refrain from criticizing current presidents. (And so far Bush has been pretty quiet about Obama, which is as it should be.) But when Carter is into actually helping people instead of spouting off his left-leaning politics or liberal theology, he has actually done some really good things like this and Habitat for Humanity.

James Madison famously said: "Deliver is from the tyranny of the majority." The majority in the USA voted Carter out of a 2nd term. Imagine what this country would be like now. Do some research, Jimmy Carter was far better than the BS rumors spread about him. His stance on oil and solar power alone makes him stand out from any other president in modern history.
His stance on oil is exactly what made him the biggest idiot to ever try to negotiate an energy policy. His actions or inaction destroyed the American oil industry. The discovery end of the oil industry still has not recovered. When he went into office there were 15,000 drilling rigs operating in the US before he was finally put out of office the rig count was under 1500. The causes for all of that are history and Carter had a lot to do with what happened.
Keith-1952: Nope. There was not enough oil being produced in the US to supply the US. We were already dependent on mid east oil and did not know it until the 1973 opec oil embargo against us. Carter did set the Alaska pipeline in motion and by the end of his term gasoline prices had fallen substantially.
Ben if you read my comments I never said anything about the US producing enough oil to supply ourselves. But I am sure if we had continued the drilling program that was going prior to the bust we would have a healthier domestic supply than we have now.
Jimmy Carter doesn't give a damn about personal credit for anything. He's going to do the best he can, for all he can, in whatever way he can. It's just who he is. The man is something else! Always has been.

In spite of all the distortions surrounding his being a champion for the rights of Palestinians, Jimmy is an incredibly decent guy, and that is the reason perhaps that his Presidency went so badly. It's hard to be a nice guy and be President of the US - just ask Pres. Obama - he has clearly learned this and is tough as nails, in spite of being a decent guy underneath. President Carter has done so much since leaving office - he may see some recognition for that in the living years (e.g. the Nobel Peace Prize) but will only get universal recognition after his passing.
Jimmy Carter is an awesome Christian man who has done so much good for so many people. His life since his presidency has been one of total selflessness, striving to eradicate disease & poverty in some of the world's most out-of-the-way places. No matter how history shows him during his years in the White House, his most important role has been that of humanitarian.
Mr Carter is a true American hero and certainly rates as one of my favorite people ever. Few people have done anywhere near the good he has, no other former President, that's for sure.

Jimmy Carter is a fine human being who genuinely cares for other people. He has always been under-rated, but his compassion and tireless work to improve the lives of others and his giving and selfless nature without desire for any praise or credit for himself speak volumes about who he is as a man and a Christian. Bravo to you, Mr. Carter. Just imagine what the world would be like if everyone reached out to others with such kindness and compassion!

I have to believe that every person that enters the areana of public service, does so because they have an idea that they can make things better for a lot of people.
Jimmy Carter is one of those people. He may not and is still not a politically motivated person, but he is sincere and genuine. I don't think he cares about his legacy as a president, I think that he cares about his legacy as a human being.

Through the years I've always known President Carter to be a good man so hearing stories like this comes to no surprise. Its a shame a man like Carter who truly cares about people didn't get a second term as president.

Both the Screwfly and the Guinea Worm existed long before man. We do not have a complete knowledge of their role in ecology except that they must have a function or they wouldn't exist.

Former presidents having the letter "R" after their names seem to be making themselves a lot of money.
The only past President doing anything for Humanity is Jimmy Carter. Clinton, either Bush, nope. President Carter is a great Christian and a Southern Gentleman he does what he does for Humanity, not politics and you cast a shadow on a fine man when you inject politics into this discussion.
