Think of Strawberries and Chocolate as a stepping stone to cure cancer...
Then again, sweeter strawberries and tastier chocolate has a market, a simple and quick cure for cancer won't make as much money in the long run as 2 years of cancer treatment...
point exactly JerryVan: it's all about the money. and its sickening most times. the article says it could help make strawberries that have a longer shelf life and "look better" because right now i guess real, or how ever distorted they already are, strawberries dont last long enough in stores or look very good. btw it doesnt mean the fruit will be healthier, it just means they can leave it out in the store longer without the consumer noticing how old it is. thats not how nature works. makes me kinda sick to know im one of the ones that eats this since its become so commercialized now
If every single scientist in the world dedicated all their research time to curing cancer, never-mind that it's a specialized field which would require training and resources that would have to be paid for, we still wouldn't have a cure in any reasonable amount of time. In addition, it'd hurt the economy that pays for such research in the first place.
Crop R&D helps feed the world and more people die annually of starvation than of cancer. While strawberries and chocolate are more of a luxury, it's still related. Don't fool yourself into thinking cancer research is the most important thing these scientists could be doing. They're providing the world a service and everyone should look at how they're contributing before pointing fingers.
Will admit that most of this went over my head, but if it makes buying strawberries easier than good! So often, even in prime height of strawberry season, fruit is damaged and so much waste if you want them for fresh fruit. Can only make so many smoothies.
The chocolate world needs another fruit flavor like another whole in the head. Really don't think strawberries compare to raspberries and chocolage, but that imho.. :)
well there goes the last of REAL fine chocolate. I hope Guylian (the Belgian chocolatier) doesn't stop using real fruits and foods in making their product. Hershey chocolate was lost a while ago; sadly, their quality is NOTHING compared to european chocolates. What ever happend to actually putting in the hard work to get your product? EVERYTHING about business now has shifted to fast production, high quantity, lower quality and, for foods atleast, less good for the consumer. I don't know if I like this world I live in anymore... nontheless I'll be living through it again tomorrow. -_-
When will scientists learn that just because they CAN doesn't mean they HAVE TO. I don't want some weird variety of manufactured chocolate or strawberries or anything else. I'm speaking specificially of Monsanto. I'll bet anyone that they are or soon will be all over this.
There are many countries in Africa and So. America that produce fantastic chocolates, the best I've ever tasted. The people who farm the cocoa need the work i.e. the money for their livelihood. Who needs chocolate from the lab.
America produces the best chocolates you have had? lol. buy some Guylian chocolate, or another european maker and you will see brands like Hershey, Russell Stover, Whitman's, have nothing on european chocolate. why? plain and simple: because they dont use all those manufactured ingredients and when they do, its not nearly as much as you will find in American chocolate. when i was living in Belgium it was unbelievable how much better even the average quality chocolate over there out-does the chocolate here in the US. but thats exactly what happens when all they care about is money. people will learn.... once it's too late.
I've had Western European Chocolate. I've never had South American Coco bean, but have heard of them and how satisfying, but could not say from personal experience. I could do without American Chocolate, but if I lived in Beligum, I could possibly live on chocolate alone!!
I did notice that when i was a child back in the 70's a peach tasted like a peach, everything had seeds ( by the way where do the seeds come from for seedless grapes?) and flavor.
They have engineered the taste out of most all our grown foods. The need for taste and flavor was to be eaten by and carried by animals to spread the species.
I wish we could stop this. GM crops are going to be the death of us all. Only in America. No wonder the world thinks of us as evil. It's all about money.
Oh no! Those evil mad scientists are doing more of their dastardly research! What next? Possibly <gasp> practical applications. <dun dun duuunnnnn>
Think of the children! Won't anybody think of the children? At this rate, the next generation will understand the world better than we do, and they might even live longer, with better health and higher quality lives as a result.
What kind of a world lets the pursuit and application of knowledge trump ignorance and paranoia? Stupid Prometheus and his fire-bringing. He started all this. I say punish all those vile scientists the same; feed their livers to the eagles. And throw in the engineers for good measure. And the mathematicians and philosophers, just in case.
Never mind cancer... Scientists are working feverishly to splice genes and create a chocolate-dipped-strawberry bush!

We need to walk before we run.

Like the farmers actually make that much money. All the money goes to the processors, not the farmer.
I'm all for better chocolate for sure, I'm a choc-aholic. But give me the real thing...
