yeah its great...... Why dont we take liquor off the shelf as it causes cancer and all sorts of social problems (never happen) lets get rid of cigarettes cause they cause cancer and heart disease (never happen) lets get rid of democrats because they cause unemployment and deficets, and ghettos (never happen) no, the govt is worried about the meat you eat, etc. So if they tell you the meat has fat in it, are you going to quit eating it? Do people quit drinking because it causes cancer? Do people still smoke? So why dont they just keep their nose out of our business?
They're not talking about getting rid of anything, they're talking about adding information.
Even though there are cancer warnings on cigarette boxes, do people ignore them? Sure. But that doesn't mean that everybody does. Information is great and empowers people to make good decisions. Just because you don't need the information, don't assume that nobody needs it.
Please, Please save us from ourselves. We need a nanny to save us from us. Please care for me, make decisions for me, tell me what I may and may not eat or drink. Please let me sign over my check to the government so I can be a lemming.
Jeff & Gary, you are meatheads. The part of the article that describes the goverment telling us what we should and should not do or getting in your business must have came out of your ass. Having more information allows those of us who do not prefer ignorance to make choices. I'm with the folks who want more information, not less. And I will pay more for leaner, cleaner, and safer beef if I can identify it. This is good for the market, which is the only reason why the beef industry is willing to support it. By preferring ignorance, you are acting like lemmings.
Sanity Check, Frankly arent you a little bit tired of all the crap that the government wants to do to "better our lives"? All they are doing is creating more government union jobs that create nothing but more deficits and that is my point of this whole thing. I dont want government doing anything more except to quit spending money on sh!t we dont need. You want information, go look it up or google it, i dont want more government intervention or information that does nothing but cost us more money. Obama and Michelle eat that penned up milk fed beef that costs 100 bucks a lb, and you dont even want to know how much fat is in that. Obama also sneaks out and eats big juicy fat filled burgers while telling you your not eating right, so i say the hell with them all!
jeff, you're absolutely right. The last thing we need is government regulation. If we let the corporations regulate themselves, they would show us how much they care about us by providing us with the best quality, lowest cost, premium services available. Because after all, they don't care about the bottom line or the mighty dollar, they care about people's health and happiness.
(sarcasm) <-- for those with sarcasm detectors turned off.
Yeah, and obama cares for you so much that he created govt run health care so you wont have to worry about being healthy anymore... ha ha sarcasm sarcasm.... I just love the government sticking its nose in our business because everything they run is so successful: like the post office, social security, medicare, amtrack, all raging success stories and with obama spending money faster than the fed can print it.... awhhh life is gooooood!!
Another dumb idea from the nanny state. Most people don't read the labels, anyway. Many who do, do it because the medical and health communities have made them so paranoid, they are afraid for their health. I wonder how big an office this beauracracy will need.
I don't get these types of comments. How do you know most people don't read labels? I do and appreciate the labels being there so I can make a wise choice.
You're right, James. When it comes to the stuff we put in our bodies, ignorance is bliss, eh?
Seriously, we live in the Information Age. More information cannot hurt, it can only help us to make better decisions to improve our lives. Unless you're James of course.
I don't read the labels either, I've got a pretty good idea of what is healthy or what will kill you. Hmm last I knew of just living killed an awful lot of folks, didn't really matter what they ate. Like James said - more big brother adding costs to items. Do you think they test all this and label it all for free? A whole new gov't department will have to inspect and oversee this. Sorry I rant a little, but there are so many things like this that drives up costs and taxes.
No, it will probably be a shared responsiblity by the USDA and FDA, just like all other nutritional lables that are on food products right now. I for one do like hearing about this. I still wonder about the reasoning behind putting nutritional lables on bottle water though.
I honestly don't think this will do much of a difference. They could put a huge sticker on a bag of chips saying this product will make your a$$ fat and it still wouldn't matter. People know what they like to eat and it's their choice how much of it they consume.
Do you know how the heart diseases cost a lot of American lives?
And, the heart disease has cost a lot of money.
One of the preventive measures of healthcare is to teach people how to take good care themselves.
And, Food and nutrition are important for people have heart diseases.
If you can help to teach those people with heart disease how to read food labels and how to eat right, it will not just prolong their lives but also reduce the cost of healthcare expenses.
I agree 100%. This government is sticking its nose in our business more and more every day. I dont want the govenment lableing anything or telling us what we can or cant eat. I dont want the government feeding kids at school either. Parents should be taking care of this, and if they cant do it, then it is not the governments problem. They are already telling restaurants they cant have toys with meals, cant have salt, cant do this and cant do that, and enough is enough. We are rapidly turning into a nanny state in which the govt has its nose in all aspects of our daily lives, and i dont like it one bit. Of course if your a liberal democrat and you collect your cash and food stamps from your daddy obama, then i guess this is all cool for you.
wow. first off, let me start by saying how surprised i am that this went from an article on providing information on the foods we eat, to a bunch of rants about the "nanny state". secondly, while i agree that adding these services does cost us more, the real culprit of higher costs are labor and a company's required profit margins. basically it comes down to whether you deem this type of information to be helpful or not. i support the labeling if only for the reason that it helps us be a bit better informed. the problem that i have with the rest of the arguments is that it won't necessarily make people eat any better. that falls totally within the realm of personal responsibility and quite frankly, our hectic lives and stretched budgets sometimes force us to make diet decisions that are less than ideal. that, coupled with the fact that as americans we associate pleasure with our meals, almost guarantees that by simply liking and desiring a certain food, healthy or not, is the major factor in deciding what we eat. not its nutritional content. so, for the time being, it seems that the argument for or against the labeling is strictly academic, not political.
Yeah, real dumb. Maybe you've never read about how many people died in the early 1900's...before regulations were put in place. Read up on the Chicago Meat Markets of the time. We have a safer food supply now (still room for improvement and education); do you think that happened because of the good intentions of the food industry?? Dolt!
Yeah real dumb JerryBFF but think a minute...... with all this good stuff they are putting in your "safe" food supply dont you wonder a little bit where all this cancer is coming from now?
Way to add another expense to the cost of doing business. When do we start scratching our heads and wondering why prices are going up?
Seriously, the people who should pay attention to nutritional info already aren't and the people who do pay attention already know where else to go to find the information. But hey, if it helps the USDA justify it's existence, who am I to stop them.
you think this is bad, wait until obama gets gas prices where he wants them.... i swear he wants to punish the people that work in this country any way he can.
well apparently you did not know that BP was one of obamas biggest campaign contributors do ya? Your blinded by democrat slogans and bullsh!t so this is the best you can do?
@eric AND jeff: would it be at all absurd for me to assert that BOTH parties had a hand in it? no one in washington, past, present, or future will have clean hands. isn't that closer to the truth? i mean, we can argue for or against one side or the other but in doing so we are simply ignoring the basic truth: we have been bought and sold folks, and we are far too complacent to look for the truth. which of the evils looks better to you?
Wedidwhat, I understand what you are saying, I am not meaning to imply one party is better than the other, I am just pointing out that, although Obama may have contributions from an oil company, he did not have anything beyond that where oil interest were concerned, where as Bush, and company, had not only campaign contributions, but in depth prior relationships with oil interests in general, which would overall influence their point of view regarding the 2nd high gas prices this country has ever seen. To further that point, in both your statement, and my own, it was in the very last year or two of the Clinton administration where we first saw huge increases in the cost of diesel fuel prices(for those of us old enough to remember, diesel use to be cheaper than regular unleaded), and has stayed that way ever since, with the largest increases overall within the last administration. I would actually welcome somewhat higher fuel prices in the long run to have diesel drop down to its mid 90's levels, and pay less for everything else(for the record both of my parents are either in, or have been in the over the road trucking industry, and for a time I had to handle the accounting, and logistics for my dad when he had his own truck).
So now that your buddy obama is in office, why are gas prices sky high and getting higher all the while obama thinks they are not high enough? If he is so wonderful, then why dont he lower gas prices. This constant Bush did it sh!t from you democrats is getting old. I dont think Bush was a great president, but he did something about the damn terrorists that attacked our country, and that is more than obama will ever do to his muslim friends. So lets talk about right now and lets ask why gas prices are going up every day under obamas watch!
Ummm Rick, go away. Unless you intend to add something substantive to the conversation. Wizard, I know what you are talking about, however I also hate paying for 3-4 lbs of burger, and make half lb patties that wind up the size of half dollars. I grill by the way, screw that fried crap, now that tastes like cardboard. Give me natural wood flavoring over that skillet taste any day.
If you dont like the taste of your burgers, just take a big ole spoon of beef lard and throw it on the skillet when cooking your burgers..... gosh the government would love that!
"In 2014 all wild game will be required to don a nutrition label before going out for the day to evade hunters". According to Tom Vilsack, Ace Bureaucrat from the USDA, "squirrel hunters and possum shooters need to know the nutritional content of the game they are pursuing". Large dangerous animals such as bears and moose will be exempted from the requirement due to the danger in affixing labels.
Hey Rick, the government is already involved as restriciting hunting. Then the herds get so big they dont have food and they starve to death, or you have a bunch of 50 lb deer running around. Of courst those deer will be real good for you cause they wont have an ounce of fat on them. This is our future.... dont ya love it? I cant wait for the day that the government will put warning lables on a standing rib roast cause its no good for ya..... possum is too greasy too..... same with ground hog, so they also will have labels on them.
good grief girl, chocolate has rat s h i t in it and there are nothing but insect bits in any cereal that you buy, but if you really want to know whats in everything thats up to you.... then you can decide if what is "being offered to you" is worth buying it. So if a rib eye steak says it has fat in it, your not gonna buy it? The nanny state is coming very fast!
Food Inc is for lemmings that want the government to take care of them all their lives. Its for people that cant think, sit and gaze at pics from obama their Messiah, and then blame Bush for all the worlds problems...
The way I see it, putting nutritional labels on food stuffs is the least intrusive thing the USDA does. And, if they do it or not doesn't make a spit of difference.
Here is an idea...put a nutritional label on that ethanol made from corn. I would like to know how much food I'm I'm pumping into my gas tank and burning by government mandate.
I want fat back in meat too. That is where the flavor is. Then the USDA can lable the new taste like, ".....like yummy no1.'
You are already paying for the ethanol that is going into your gas tank by higher prices for milk, eggs, meat, cereal, etc. The govt subsidises this stupid idea and we all pay for it back in higher prices anyway. They wont drill for oil where it is known to be so we go thru screwy bulls h i t nonsense of ethanol, wind power, green this and green that, and getting no where in the process. We have a baffoon flying around in private jets yelling about global warming when the whole world is a frozen tundra, yet that is their mantra and it makes a lot of people rich.... we need government to stay the heck out of our lives, period.
Way to go Jeff-935318--If more people would wake up and realize that all this green energy in doing putting a lot of money in a few peoples pockets and will never help the working people in the USA, just cost them more money. It is time the working people stand up and say we have had enough...
There are two people i know of that will score big on this crap, and that is Al Gore and Obama. They wanted cap and trade so bad because Gore and Obama have it set up where you can buy and trade carbon credits and that will make them both rich.... nothing like a bunch of crooks feeding off the global warming phony crisis is there? Notice that everything that Obama does has to be done immediatly to avoid a crisis. The whole government makes me sick with all their lies and bullsh!t they feed us.
When was the last time you look on the label on the packaging of a fryer, steak or pork chops? I would think most of us are too busy to give a sh!t. As long as it looks fresh, we buy it. We know a steak with strips of fat in it has more cholesterol than a roast with no visible fat. Please Uncle Sam, go do something useful, like NOTHING!!
its like a seasoning, but bleach helps out too when the meat gets a little dark. Its good for ya though..... dont worry, be happy, obama will make sure your meat is taken care of...... by the way.... in beecher illinois they have a great meat market called Beecher Meats..... good selection, and nobody beats their meat.!!
Dumb. The ones who most need to read labels & lose weight don't buy raw meat and cook their own food... they eat fast food, restaurant food, and junk food.
if you do not know what the label means and how you do the counting.
I do my counting by the scale. If I eat X amount, and I gain Y pounds, I eat X minus 1. If I still gain, I eat X-2, etc, etc until there is no gain. And it's common sense that the gain is not from eating vegies and fruits, but from meat, potato with sour cream/butter, bread, ice cream, pie, candy and cookies.
Thank you for FDA; for those people have no idea of those labels mean; perhaps, when they are sick, all those food labels have meanings for them.
One of the preventive care for Healthcare cost is to teach people to eat healthy and right. And, how do healthcare experts do it?
One of the approaches is to teach people to read food labels and to take care themselves to eat RIGHT, in which it is going to trim the healthcare cost.
Yeah, but then you have Beck and Limba saying that the government is trying to controll people, and what they can eat. Look at how they blasted Michelle Obama for trying to bring awareness to childhood obesity, and educate children on proper eating habits. "DON'T TOUCH MY FRIES!!!" take your own advise, portly. Although you do have to keep in mind there are many cases of obesity that are a result of thyroid issues as well, and no amount of healthy eating is going to take care of their weight problem.
Billie-yeah FDA is a joke. They approve stuff, for only half the time it to be taken off the shelves or whatever a few months later. I should add though they don't normally do that until incidents or problems and or deaths have occurred. @Eric so not to go off on the whole campaign of M Obama's 'issue', yeah I totally love how they don't half the time take into acct not everyone is obese or overweight by choice & that pressuring those ppl round the clock isn't going to help
How about the number of days the animal was cruelly confined or neglected or the number of times the animal was beaten or kicked before killed? That's information.
Oh really!! yes,, that is how they tenderize meat now.... they poke them and beat them real good while alive, and that gives meat a more tender natural taste. I like mine kept in a real tight cage where they cant move and then feed them milk, you know, like the beef that Obama and Michelle eat that costs 100bucks a pound. Now that is some real eating for ya! I would settle for just a good beating now and then to bring out the flavour!! ha ha
they should ya know, why stop at just food? Lets do it all.... and then lets have a govt inspector at the door of every grocery store peaking in to see what you bought and to check your size to see if your fat or not. If your too fat, then the govt can cut off your govt run health care cause your not taking care of yourself..... wont be long now.
certainly if your too stupid to see that your fatness is causing your health problems you shouldnt be getting any assistance at all. like a govt provided drug treatment.
What's next? Labelling apples and oranges? Meat and poultry have fixed nutritional values that can readily be found on the internet or the library. This is a waste of time and money and will only lead to more expensive meat and poultry.
Not everyone has the internet and cities are closing libraries every day,and unfortunately, the people who could best use this type of information don't have access to it.Labeling is the next best thing.
Given the problems so many in the US face with obesity, it makes one pause to wonder where the Federal goverment could go with this. On the surface it appears reasonable in trying to help people with their grocery shopping decisions. But (there is always a but...) statements by goverment representatives that Americans need to be encouraged to eat better and healthier could make the suspicious sect of society foresee a time when the "food police" will regulate and monitor what we eat and how much. I can see it now..."step away from the hamburger helper and pick up the tofu or we will tazer you...we know what's best for you"
This is easy, what you feed your animals you get. Wild animals, if you are aware have very little or no fat and the meat is dark, and sometimes strong tasting if you do not dress, clean and age your kill correctly, however, wild game or fish is the healthiest meat you can eat as it is "pure organic" and not supplemented with harmful ingredients. So get out there and harvest some wild game and you will live longer and healthier.
how bout some good organic rat, or skunk? very lean and very democrat for you too....... ground hog is good too if you cook it slow in the oven and marinate it with owl piss...... yummy!
Dave, your making me miss home. We don't have elk that you can hunt here in the midwest, though white tail is pretty tasty though, really good in chili.
tks for re-posting this :) yes, this could very well be an end result of taking things to extremes, rather than teaching balance (as mention later comment). We're all human, so if things are pushed one way 'too' much like is now days, the pendulum will swing the other direction (esp with young ppl) and eating disorders (various) most likely will sky-rocket-sad but true. My husband and I both found it interesting, as fighting battle with this myself, that they would put this amidst things on here and other sites too about weight loss, diets, & labels. These stories usually get shoved aside. I just wish they had given one day with only this nationally, and none of the rest. I read that everyday.
We really need to move on to, Soylent Green. It can be fashioned into many shapes sizes and flavors. Just add water and heat and serve. Monsanto and ADM would thrive on such a venture. Hell, their contributing a lot of by-product into our foods today anyway.
Thank you nanny state. I feel so much safer now. The government allows hormones and other supplements to be added but I don't notice those items noted on the nutritional labels. I find it comical, in a non funny way, that the government tells us that so many poor children are obese in our country but then tells us that there’s a crisis because so many go to bed hungry. Can't wait till they take over health care.
yeah, it's a very hypocritical, mixed message it seems, no matter what your age. It's tough to be in the world but almost having to separate yourself from this crap or maybe even use earplugs..ridiculous.
Our federal government continues to passe laws and regulations based on the dumbest and most irresponsible citizens among us. When will we stop the this monstrous government from taking complete control over our lives and pocket books with this type of legislation?
god- and G Man, Everything our government does costs us all money. Even if it's labels on our food, the manufacturers pass that on to the customers. As long as you don't see how much of your money the government costs you, you two will bumble along thinking how great everything is. Or do you guys work for the FDA? That might explain your blind allegience to big government. And for your info, I watch that guy on MSNBC with the lady's name, Rachel Maddow, just as much as I watch anything on Fox News. Unfortunate that there are those among us that need to be told the simplest of things.
Wonderful news.
yeah its great...... I love the people who get angry at the idea of having more information available to keep businesses accountable to customers.
Oh dear lord, let us stay ignorant. Things is too complicated for me to understand.
Hopefully they will list all the chemicals they inject/add to the meat on the lovely nutrition list (not likely).
For anyone making comments on the "nanny state"....you may not read labels, but many do. I want the info (even if it's not complete).
Jeff & Gary, you are meatheads. The part of the article that describes the goverment telling us what we should and should not do or getting in your business must have came out of your ass. Some of us put health above costs, but you can do the opposite if you wish.
you think this is bad, wait until obama gets gas prices where he wants them.... i swear he wants to punish the people that work in this country any way he can.

In 2013 they will require nutrition labeling on ice cream cones except that in Hawaii the shave ice will require labeling............
I want the fat back in my meat! It all tastes like cardboard. It just isn't right when you have to add oil to burgers so they don't stick.
wiz - You shouldn't be eating burgers unless they are soy burgers,
Sincerely,
Tom Vilsak, Ace Bureaucrat
Ummm Rick, go away. Unless you intend to add something substantive to the conversation. Oh yeah Eric grilling always the better choice. Burgers or any nice hunk of beef. But once again no fat on steaks either. crispy fat mmm lol !
It's probably been genetically modified.
Perhaps they could afix the labels on the larger animals with a robot, kinda like the police use. --- just joking -----
Good one, Rick. LOL
I cant wait for the day that the government will put warning lables on a standing rib roast cause its no good for ya..... possum is too greasy too..... same with ground hog, so they also will have labels on them.
jeff - I get my possum as road kill cuz I can't find it in the local supermarket or the woods. No labels on that road kill possum. lol
Hey Rick, if you need a reciepe for that possom we can get u one.! Gotta be aged road kill though..... aged road kill is the best... adds flavour!
Food Inc. movie tells the story..........Yes, we need to know what is being offered to us .........before we decide to buy it.........
good grief girl, chocolate has rat s h i t in it and there are nothing but insect bits in any cereal that you buy, but if you really want to know whats in everything thats up to you.... then you can decide if what is "being offered to you" is worth buying it. So if a rib eye steak says it has fat in it, your not gonna buy it? The nanny state is coming very fast!
food inc was one of the craziest movies ive ever seen
How hilarious this is for a country in which its people don't read.
I know they don't read street signs. Ya know like the big red ones.
Is botulism bacteria in meat considered a protein or a supplement?
Both.
seasoning
its like a seasoning, but bleach helps out too when the meat gets a little dark.
I have taught Diabetic people how to do calorie and all nutritional count.
Think about yourselves how can you do it if you do not know what the label means and how you do the counting.
I do my counting by the scale. If I eat X amount, and I gain Y pounds, I eat X minus 1. If I still gain, I eat X-2, etc, etc until there is no gain. And it's common sense that the gain is not from eating vegies and fruits, but from meat, potato with sour cream/butter, bread, ice cream, pie, candy and cookies.
stop jobseeker your makeing me hungry
I call that pre-market tenderizing.
Oh really!! yes,, that is how they tenderize meat now.... they poke them and beat them real good while alive, and that gives meat a more tender natural taste. I like mine kept in a real tight cage where they cant move and then feed them milk, you know, like the beef that Obama and Michelle eat that costs 100bucks a pound. Now that is some real eating for ya! I would settle for just a good beating now and then to bring out the flavour!! ha ha
I like my animal beat and terrorized first.
Why don't we just label everything....including alcohol...everyone should take note that is the industry which is left alone.....hmmmm, wonder why?
Like the sticker my brother put on a bottle of expensive wine that said, Caution: consuming contents may lead to pregnancy. :)
they should ya know, why stop at just food? Lets do it all.... and then lets have a govt inspector at the door of every grocery store peaking in to see what you bought and to check your size to see if your fat or not. If your too fat, then the govt can cut off your govt run health care cause your not taking care of yourself..... wont be long now.
certainly if your too stupid to see that your fatness is causing your health problems you shouldnt be getting any assistance at all. like a govt provided drug treatment.
jeff-you know as funny as that sounds, we're not too far from them stepping over that line ya know ;)
What's next? Labelling apples and oranges? Meat and poultry have fixed nutritional values that can readily be found on the internet or the library. This is a waste of time and money and will only lead to more expensive meat and poultry.
Except for the hormones, sodium pumped into chicken to 'plump' it... It couldn't hurt.
Elk roast is AWESOME! Boar is great too... I need to start hunting again :)
how bout some good organic rat, or skunk? very lean and very democrat for you too....... ground hog is good too if you cook it slow in the oven and marinate it with owl piss...... yummy!
Dave, your making me miss home. We don't have elk that you can hunt here in the midwest, though white tail is pretty tasty though, really good in chili.

What is a sad consequence.
Teach parents and kids and people how to eat right. Eat healthy wiith a balanced diet.
tks for re-posting this :) yes, this could very well be an end result of taking things to extremes, rather than teaching balance (as mention later comment).
Better the "wonderful" FDA should demand labeling: Hormone's, GMO, ANYTHING not "normal" that would be far more beneficial!
I would prefer organic free range grass fed and finished meat.
Only meat and nothing but the meat. Just the way God intended it.
You would.
Great waste of governments ever growing power! People need to learn how to make decisions on their own, if you don't want to eat it don't buy it.
Our federal government continues to passe laws and regulations based on the dumbest and most irresponsible citizens among us. When will we stop the this monstrous government from taking complete control over our lives and pocket books with this type of legislation?
Like you do with Fox News?
god- and G Man, Everything our government does costs us all money.
