It is amazing how many celebs consider themselves experts on everything. They live in a fictional world while acting and this must carry over to their real lives. They have lots of time on their hands between acting jobs and just seem to acquire grandiose delusions of all kinds involving the real world, of which they are often really ignorant.
Unfortunately the public just reinforces their behavior because they are just as delusional about their "idols."
Mel Gibson behaves badly and everyone is shocked as if they know the guy personally. No people he is not Mad Max, He is not Braveheart. He is just some guy that acts and you dont know squat about him personally.
We need to stop calling them "stars" too. They are overpaid adults playing 'make-believe" for the big-screen and often not very well.
I hate celebs. They've taken the art out of movie making. >:(
I think that we should all listen to the celebrities and do what they say because of how beautiful and smart they all are. If you think about it, they didn't get to be so beautiful and intelligent by accident; they are attractive and smart because they are doing all the right things in life and that's how they got that way. If more of us followed the leadership and examples of celebrities, our society would be better off and the world would be such a wonderful place.
Why would anyone take health advice from a celebrity unless that celebrity was an MD??? Just because they have the public's attention doesn't mean we have to listen to them.
I'm not sure if the point of this article is to make fun of celebrities or to try to put an end to these nonsensical ideas. You'd think they would have a more comprehensive list if they were trying to stop the spread of misinformation, so I have to assume that that it is the celebrities that are the target.
I would laugh at them, too, except that I know highly intelligent people who believe the exact same idiotic things. I worked with a guy who went on the lemon-honey-cayenne diet almost 20 years ago, smart as a whip, but he was convinced it was a good thing nonetheless.
Besides, I'm not sure how believing that holograms will up your energy level is any different than, say, wearing a cross and thinking that it will protect you. Millions of people do the latter and not only do they not get laughed at, it is usually taken as a sign of a good person, even though they are just as delusional.
Yes, "highly intelligent" people some of these things; critical thinkers don't. In this society, we erroneously equate the two. This is the reason our country is collapsing.
Problem is, most celebrities cannot differentiate between fiction and reality. Spending time in front of cameras, acting out roles, confuses the ones with personality disorders to begin with. Actors and actresses need down time. A chance to become normal, to live as a normal person.
Lack of adjustment creates a fantasy world and opens the door to psychological suggestions. Any outside influences, however strange, become a stabilizing force, resulting in a false sense of security.
Unless "snake oil" remedies are harmful, let them think they are helping. Something like placebos, mind over matter.
Without reading the SAS article, I can only assume they didn't address Jenny McCarthy and her cult of anti-vaxxers. Either that, or MSNBC is afraid to put that part in their take on it.
Honestly, the placebo effect can be harmful if it is treating the symptoms of a deadly disease, such as tricking the mind into thinking the pain is gone, but not treating the disease. Placebos work great for things like colds (which there is no known cure, or even a slowdown, other than massive doses of antiviral drugs), but not on curable diseases, no matter what the patient thinks. Placebos can work on allergies, but not cancer.
But the anti-vaxxers? They should definitely be put on an island by themselves, then given rubella, pertussis, tetanus, mumps, and measles. I have no sympathy for them, I have no words to describe my feelings of disgust and hatred towards them. Putting innocent children at risk because some quack made up a study, was debunked, but is still out there promoting homeopathy as a suitable defense against germs. Homeopathy itself is bad enough, but actively attempting to discredit science so you can increase your celebrity status, sell more juju "medicine," and appear all hip and new-agey... I honestly hope they do contract a horrible disease that could easily have been prevented with a vaccine and suffer immense pain and anguish for it.
Man those are dumb claims-the sperm, bracelet and charcoal (WTF?) being almost beyond belief- Also, detox is for suckers. Why not just starve yourself for two weeks minus the tablespoon of maple syrup or table sugar?
Anyone stupid enough to buy these products deserves to be swindled. The people that push these things are just like the hucksters selling Jesus, God, Religion or acerage in Alaskan Cactus Farms!
Garlic necklaces are known to ward off vampires. Silver repels werewolves and some types of Mississippi-based vampires. Other than that, all celebrity health claims are baloney.
Bill: Nasal rinse with Holy Water helps cure colds caused by spirits. Just be sure to start slowly because the nasal ectoplasma burns when contacted with holy water.
Anyone stupid enough to buy these products deserves to be swindled. The people that push these things are just like the hucksters selling Jesus, God, Religion or acerage in Alaskan Cactus Farms!
Read it again dumbass. It didn't say EAT your sperm. The point is that he has sex and doesn't ejaculate. I don't know why he's calling it "reabsorb", but he's not talking about eating it. In fact, this is a well-established Tantric practice of hundreds to thousands of years. Whether it has any of the claimed effects is probably left to those who practice it to answer. But anyone claiming it does not or cannot, unless they have tried it or directly observed those who have tried it, is just speculating. Last I checked, speculation isn't science, and these doctors who comment on things they don't know anything about are just as much quacks as people who say things work when there is absolutely no evidence that they do.
carles - If you don't ejaculate then there would be nothing to reabsorb. The whole notion is baseless and ridiculous. It would be like saying I unzipped my pants, stood at the urinal, and didn't pee because I wanted the health benefits of reabsorbing my urine.
RU Kidding carles? I have this detox system for $19.95....but wait...... if you call now you'll get two detox systems (just pay separate S&H)
...and these doctors who comment on things they don't know anything about are just as much quacks as people who say things work when there is absolutely no evidence that they do.
Yea, What does some quack "reproductive research scientist at the University of Manchester" know about REPRODUCTIVE RESEARCH? I'll pick that quack over a cage fighter anyday.
I didn't think he ate it. I posted that I was reading it while I was eating lunch and found that bit unappetizing. Now who's the dumbass? Hmmm? I don't want to know what he does with his ejaculate.
He would be better off eating it. That is not my cup of tea, but if he wants to get the nutritional value back into his body, he needs to just gobble it up.
The Master Cleanse is legit and detoxing is not a joke. Our entire food supply is poisoned from processing and preservatives. This article is meant to push people away from legit alt medicine by grouping the master cleanse with "sperm re-absorption". I have gotten tar ropes out of my intestines doing this program. NO joke!
Oh my god. Tar ropes?? That is a very disturbing mental image. I'm not surprised you'd want to do a cleanse if you were eating, what, bitumen sandwiches? Har har. No, seriously, if you have photos, don't be shy.
josh-588351 - There are no scientifically proven medical benefits known to be obtained by 'cleansing' be it of the 'detox' type or the pure colon cleansing type. In fact, it is terribly unhealthy and as someone who claims to have health training you should definitely know your sources and shouldn't be recommending pure quackery of this sort. Do you also recommend ear-candling?
Judd-2749800 - I stand corrected and amend my statement to include the text "with the exception of detox methods involving orifice picking (to include but not be limited to nose, ear, butt, and belly-button)"
Didn't General Jack Ripper (played by Sterling Hayden) in "How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love the Bomb" state that he denied women his precious bodily fluids? Just before he started WWIII and committed suicide...
Not having sex before an athletic competition is a pretty common practice. In case, he might be having sex, but just not ejaculating. It's different, and maybe he's just looking for a loophole (pun if you will), but it's not any more crazy than any of the other superstitions that most pro athletes have. And you know what, they can do things you can't, so who are you to say you know what works and what doesn't?
carles, as many coaches have repeatedly said, it's not the sex that's the problem (the night before a game, competition, etc) - it's the staying up all night looking for it!
There was a long-time (he passed away a few years ago) sports reporter in Toronto who always asked both head coaches, the day before the CFL's championship game, whether or not they wanted their players to indulge or abstain. Most gave the usual answers, but one simply said "if you usually don't, then please abstain. But if you usually do, and it works for you, then PLEASE indulge." His team won the game.
And Elvis is still alive, aliens really did land in Roswell, there is a really evil plot behind the JFK conspiracy, Bigfoot is real and is a fan of Elvis, and ancient aliens gave science to the Mayans.
Alternative medicine is nothing more than witchcraft and voodoo.
And a degree in holistic health is supposed to impress us? There is more unproven crap coming out of "holistic" practices than most any other health practice. If you want to cleanse something go to a holistic practitionor, your wallet will be very clean.
No, there is more unproven crap coming out of the Western medical establishment. Recalls on Big Pharma, laser-surgery radiation machines that aren't being checked and calibrated before treatment, antidepression medicine that INCREASES the risk of suicide... Meanwhile insurance, pharma, medical device companies are experiencing record profits.
"Holistic health" might be a false concept - "health" is sufficient - but when most people think of the Western medical approach as the sole authority on their bodies, can you really blame people for looking for an alternative given the abuses mentioned above?
Notice, who are the ones instituting recalls, finding out that routine calibration of certain machines are necessary, and finding the side effects in those anti-depression meds? Doctors. Scientists. The FDA. For every highly publicized "Big Pharma" drug that gets recalled, there are hundreds that treat and cure terrible diseases that work great. Certain anti-depression meds do increase suicidal thoughts in young patients, but they also make life livable for those suffering and their families (ever have a family member with clinical depression? Not fun).
There is no such thing as "Western" Medicine, there is only medicine. You show a research team something that works and how it works and they'll jump on the profit bandwagon. Do you have any idea how much scratch Homeopathy and Magic Wristbands alone make? Any business that didn't give a @!$%# about their product actually working would get behind those in a second.
Did you know that the foundation of accupuncture of the ear is based on the fact that an ear "looks like" a fetus. The ear is seen as representative of the whole body so the accupuncturist can access "chi" (or "xi") more easily. Essentially, this practice, as well as all acupuncture is no more than sympathetic magic made to look scientific.
Further, the "fluxions" that chiropractors claim cause health problems are non-existent. This myth has been debunked numerous times in double blind studies.
Celebrities shouldn't be giving health advice... nor should they be publicly endorsing presidential candidates.. they should keep their thoughts and opinions to themselves and stick to acting. They have very large egos and people are so gullible they eat it up. If Angelina and Brad Pitt say it, it must be so. Well Oprah said... and so on and so on.
Youhave the wrong emphasis there. Celebrities don't sign away their rights to free speech, etc simply because they are celebrities. However, thinking people don't pay attention to them.
The problem isn't in what any given individual is saying but the lack of critical thought of those who pay attention to them. Unfortunately, critical thought simply isn't being taught in too many places, and is anathema to organized religions. That's why so many people are so very gullible.
"Re-absorbing sperm" is not what you think......part of tantric yoga if I recall correctly is an "internal ejaculation". Supposed to keep your "spiritual energy" within you.
Mystical nonsense, like "holisitc healing". No science, only supersitition and anecodtes, usually from people selling a service or nooks.
I've yet to hear why people's life spans are decades longer now than in the 'good old days' when everyone ate "natural food", or at least what was left after the insects and crop diseases got through with the fields, assuming they didn't die of scurvy or pellegra or some of the more interesdting fungi that can live in damp, rotting rye grains, among other little charming wee beasties nature has out there in a pure "natural" state.
Celebrities often have fools surround them, trying to stay in the entourage. Get their ear and you can brag to your friends that your their newest, bestest buddy. Celebrities also want to stay on top of the newest, brighest, shinyest. Look at the ones who have had bad plastic sugery. I'm not going to call them stupid, but I will say gullible. EXTREMELY. The thing is, some idiot fan will read that so and so does this, and they will do it also. It makes them fictionally closer. Hey so and so is into heroin and Jack for breakfast. I'll do that to. It made him a celebrity. Man has a diet from thousand of years of evolution. Wearing magnets and crap is like trying to buy talent. It don't work like that. Magic is fiction in cases like this.
They are more con men first. Actors can be just as stupid as the next guy. Money and fame draws the quacks and loons at the speed of sound. Read about the Beatles and Magic Alex. Mail order ministers/doctors for their basement born religions and concoctions.
Cheapster, of course there are recalls of actual real medicines. Would you think that cars are recalled more often than boxes of magical air? Of course, cars actually do things. Medicine has actual effects. If the medicine is produced incorrectly, or if scientists (doctors) find a problem with the safety or efficacy (which are periodically checked by actual science) then recalls are performed.
Holistic protocols, ie., boxes of magical air, do nothing -- so who'd know if it broke, failed to work, etc...
What's the harm? Dunno -- why is cocaine illegal? Could be because the detriments outweigh the benefits. Check out WHATSTHEHARM.NET
Maybe due to the fact that "holistic" products aren't regulated? If they're sold as "supplements", they aren't regulated by the FDA as actual medications or medical devices. That's why it took so long to get ephedra off the market, even though there were documented cases of deaths even at the manufacturer's recommended dose.
Part of the problem is the experts never give evidence the claims are false, fake , lies, etc. Just saying it "aint so" isn't enough for those who still have the gullible brain and also fail to convince the weak but functioning brain folks. There a lot of "believers" out there who will join their fellow believers who are now on the other side of the sod. Too many of our medical profession would rather pile up their dollars rather than "waste" their time on this worthless junk and do not give willingly and freely the information to kill off this junk.
Are you high? The scientific side of the argument is all about posting their data! Use a search engine or read a scientific journal, "the experts" are literally exploding with evidence and would love to show you, but nobody bothers to do the least bit of looking beyond newspaper quotes.
Check out Dr. Barrett's excellent site at http://www.quackwatch.org/. Dr Barrett freely presents good scientific evidence that debunks many claims of the huckters and quacks out there who would rob you of your money and health for their profit.
I disagree. Too many people are willfully deluding themselves, and pay no mind to evidence. Show them evidence that a conventional medication works better than an herbal concoction, and they will tell you the study must have been funded by a pharmaceuticals company. Tell them that vaccines have only very rare side effects and prevent terrible diseases, and they will tell you there is a government conspiracy to kill Americans and that your data comes from a corrupt government agency. Check out comments pages attached to articles about vaccination vs. nonvaccination.
C'mon, if it was that good you would be selling it in 1 oz. bottles for the same price -- costs less to ship. Oh, and make the price $29.99 -- looks better to the consumer. Marketing! ;)
Sounds like Holy Water. I was raised Catholic and my mom had a little bottle of it around. Plastic bottle with a gold cross on it. I doubt the bottle was free.
Ah ha ha ha ha. I love the sperm reabsorbtion one. When i was younger some friends and I hatched a scheme to try and convince an empty headed bimbo, uh, i mean young lady, that sperm had an enzyme that would aid in weight loss (if you have to ask why you should be on nick.com)
Shoot, if I could get Ashton Kutcher to say it, it would be gospel and I'd be a hero to men.
This reminds me of a girlfriend I had. I would tell her that her hair looked a little dull and she needed some protein. She always knew just what I meant and proceeeded accordingly. No joke!

They do know how to push drugs though, I will give them credit where credit is due.

More recalls of Medical prescripted drugs than holistic recalls
and what harm if it makes you Feel/act better?
1. More unverified claims for herbal remedies than prescription drugs.
2. More scientific evidence for effectiveness of prescription drugs.
What harm if it makes you feel/act better?
- That same argument can be made for narcotics and alcohol.
I have some super special magic water to sell. It was blessed by a Certified Shaman. $30 / gallon. Guaranteed to cure everything you never had.
C'mon, if it was that good you would be selling it in 1 oz. bottles for the same price -- costs less to ship. Oh, and make the price $29.99 -- looks better to the consumer. Marketing! ;)
Of course, isn't marketing a form of acting?
Sounds like Holy Water. I was raised Catholic and my mom had a little bottle of it around. Plastic bottle with a gold cross on it. I doubt the bottle was free.
What? Eat right and exercise? That is the craziest thing I have ever heard!!
No joke!
Trucker....so she washed her hair with a raw egg? (my guess not) My guess is an outtake of "There's Something About Mary".
