Dude you stole my plan. Damn it now I have to check the place for bugs.
I find it ironic that they mention New Year's Eve and hooking up and planning ahead, but nowhere do they mention alcohol or getting to liquored up and suggest to drink in moderation. I'm guessing a lot of the young people going out are hoping to hook up regardless but since they flock to bars and liquor stores on New Years Eve I'm sure the booze has helped up the statistics.
ka56: My bible reading friends (at least the girls) tell me the complete opposite. And they get grossed out by anything other than missionary and some believe it is only for reproduction, not pleasure.
LanaD - I know a few Christians like this too but I think their beliefs come more from faulty church teachings than from reading their Bible. Songs of Songs for example mentions everything from oral sex to stripteases (within marriage). Anyway, here's what my church says about sex:
Regarding the functions of sex, the Bible gives the following purposes for marital sex, and each is beneficial to the marriage:
Pleasure (Song of Songs)
Children (Gen 1:28)
Oneness (Gen 2:24)
Knowledge (Gen 4:1)
Protection (1 Cor7:2-5)
Comfort (2 Sam 12:24)
Great problems occur when any one of these purposes is elevated as the sole or primary purpose of sex. When that occurs, couples will love sex and hate children, for example. Or, love children but only have sex when the woman is fertile, which biblically is not frequent enough.
That concept will probably be forced upon us when Palin is president and O'Donnell is vp.You know, the born again virgin and no masterbating bill. Then what am I to do with my lonely penis?
All I know is when they have come to me for "sex advice" oral sex is something they want to hear nothing about whatsoever. Same thing with exotic positions and toys. They claim it is sodomy. One girl tried to tell me her abstinence teaching told her women cant even have orgasms until they are 26 so she thought I was lying about how good my husbands lovins are.
When that occurs, couples will love sex and hate children, for example.
Haha what is wrong with that? Sounds just like my husband and I.
This article rates right up there with "Don't use your blow dryer in the bathtub" or "Don't iron pants while wearing them." How dumb do you have to be to NOT know that unprotected sex -- with a stranger or otherwise -- CAN cause pregnancy????
I worked at a retail store and worked in the health and beauty section. You would see teens and woman asking about pregnancy testers right before School started, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines, after the prom and after the school year ended. It seemed like these were peak times when an unplanned or unexpected pregnancy occurred. Just look at all the births in September (one of the most popular months to be born).
In the U.S., about half of the more than 6 million pregnancies that occur each year are unintended and more than 1.2 million end in induced abortion, according to government figures.
1.2 million murders. All in the name of a "good time." Happy New Year.
BTW, how many orphans have you adopted, since you're so worried about children and their rights? One? Two? Three? Or none? because you sure want to control what women do with their own bodies.
Do you vote 'yes' to increase welfare taxes? Because when a woman is forced to carry a pregnancy to term she can't afford, she needs health care, housing and food for that child for 18 years. Are you going to be in favour of supporting her during that time? It's expensive. Usually Teabaggers like yourself are against anything that costs them money or taxes. They don't seem to see the connection.
Put your money where your mouth is, Longing. Put up or shut up.
Yes, I have adopted children. They were not orphans but they were unwanted by their birthmothers. The number is none of your business. I have, in your terms, put my money where my mouth is. Also I have given my time, and my love to them and continue to. I did it not because it is my opinion but my belief.
I am not, as you suppose, a "teabagger." And what I wrote was not a political statement. It happens to be my personal belief to which I am entitled. Yes, I pay my full share of taxes and as to how I vote, that is no more your business than how you vote is mine.
As for your "polite advice" to "shut up", whether I have "put up" to your satisfaction or not, I am entitled to voice my opinions as much as anyone else. Ergo, I will not "shut up" about this now or at any future time.
Try to maintain some civility on public forums. Your "tough" act does not impress me or anyone else for that matter.
Tired of Silly - that is your belief and I support your right to express it. Personally, I believe life begins at conception.
Peridot-1693859Do you vote 'yes' to increase welfare taxes? Because when a woman is forced to carry a pregnancy to term she can't afford, she needs health care, housing and food for that child for 18 years. Are you going to be in favour of supporting her during that time?
Increase welfare taxes? Since when is welfare taxed? It would be better to start scrutinizing the recipients of those welfare payments, and pay only those who TRULY NEED the help! And how rude you are to tell someone to "shut up". It's usually those who NEED to, that tell others to.
I bet there are a LOT of people who would have gladly adopted one of those unwanted children, if this country's adoption laws weren't so ridiculous. (Notice how many people adopt from abroad? It's easier to get THOSE children, than it is our own.)
and Tired....you need to read more science books and get out of the comic books. And no, I'm not a "Bible thumper". Scientific studies are now showing that life begins at conception. Even now, they are just realizing that shrimp and lobsters can, in fact, feel the pain of that boiling water people throw them into while they are still alive. Did you sleep through the last ten years, or weren't you born yet?
Maybe both of you could learn to contribute something worthy to this country, outside of your ignorance. Although they DO say "ignorance is bliss".
Conway, those who cry foul at 'shut up' shouldn't insinuate that another makes no worthy contribution to society. It makes you sound both rude and self righteous.
Having said that, I agree that adoption laws should be amended to recognize that there is a serious divide between people who have children they don't want and people who want children they can't have.
I agree with you further that ignorance is bliss. I often find myself envying those who's opinions are based solely on dogma. Being completely free from doubt and self-reflection due to the indisputable truth of my position would be liberating if it weren't so repugnant.
I do take issue with your scientific reasoning linking studies indicating that lobsters feel pain with the hypothesis that fetuses feel pain for one reason; neither are people. Inflicting pain on a lobster is different than inflicting pain on a human being, which is yet still different from inflicting pain on a fetus.
Also, I'd like to think in the total of things I contribute to society my newsvine opinions are an immeasurably small part, and I try, oh do I try, not to tell people to shut up.
Longingforcompitence, good posts, both. I disagree entirely with the line of reasoning that 'life begins at conception' but applaud your poise and decorum. While I agree with Peridot that unintended children are a part of the problem and adoption is a viable and admirable solution, pregnancy itself has it's own costs. Ask any pregnant woman, though for the sake of safety do so at a reasonable distance as it can be hazardous. In terms of physical costs, emotional turmoil, and employment ramifications, pregnancy itself can be devastating to an individual. A woman with a rising career can be put off track for years by a pregnancy, something that contributes to the 'glass ceiling' inequality.
Now I am not a rabid pro-lifer, I believe abortion should be legal. But let's call a spade a spade, please. Pregnancy begins at the moment of conception, so if you have had sex and then the next day do something to stop a possible pregnancy from continuing, you are not "preventing" pregnancy, you are terminating that pregnancy, i.e., aborting an embryo (your future child). Just think about it.
Face facts, and editors, please use correct and truthful vocabulary.
No pregnancy begins the moment the embryo attaches to the wall of the uterus. You know there are many conceptions that take place and are naturally flushed away before they can attach.
if you have had sex and then the next day do something to stop a possible pregnancy from continuing, you are not "preventing" pregnancy, you are terminating that pregnancy, i.e., aborting , an embryo (your future child). Just think about it.
Science doesn't support the theory that EC functions by causing a fertilized blastocyst to fail to implant.
What is so special about the new year. It is just a mark on the calandar. Man made the calandar, so there is no real importance to the number changing.
It is not even close--the 3 weeks or so following the beginning of fall college semester is the busiest time for sales of Plan B. This is from a pharmacist, and believe me the sales of Plan B then are 4-5 times more than any other time of year.
I'd like to think that there is a spike in EC purchases after blizzards, hurricanes, etc. People needing EC after preplanned holidays such as New Years and Valentines day is just another example of how dumb some folks can be. Never mind the fact that one can contract a sexually transmitted disease while babymaking...I wonder why common sense doesn't travel over the synapse!
come on ladies. You're the ones who get pregnant & if you decide to keep the baby 9 times out of 10 the father WILL NOT be participating. Think about it. Why would you want that? How many forms of over the counter birth control are there?
My daughter got pregnant from a one night stand. Didn't even know the last name of the father & doesn't know how to find him. My grandchild will never know her biological father much less any family medical history. He doesn't even know there's a child out there of his.
Where does the father fit in besides no rights what so ever...If a man and a woman had sex, made love or what ever terms you would use to call it - the father who is considered in fact to be half, 50% (not 49.99% or less) of creating this beautiful little human growth. Why is it then that he doesn't seem to have any rights as to decide if his child lives or not...if a man and a woman make love consensual then the man should have the right to raise that child even if the mother doesn't want it...the law needs to change as to giving both parents the decision as to abortion or not. If the father wants to raise the child then the woman needs to give birth of their child and give the child then to the father. I think then you may see a little less unplanned pregnancies....???? Yes there are millions of responsible and great fathers.
When science is developed to the point at which a woman can hand over a fertilised ovum to the father of said ovum, provided he wants it and he wants to carry it to term, then this will make sense. Until that time women should continue to have the right to choose.
Every single one of my friends who has had an abortion did so because the prospective father refused to step up and take responsibility. All three of them. Don't tell me about responsible fathers. None of them wanted anything to do with being a father. As a matter of fact, some of the women already had children when they were married and the fathers had nothing to do with their sons after divorce.
Sperm donors. That's all they were. As long as women have to provide everything, being mother and father, we deserve the right to choose.
Why is it then that he doesn't seem to have any rights as to decide if his child lives or not...
Umm . . . mebbe 'cause he doesn't have to carry it and give birth to it? When he can figure out how to do that, then by all means let's give him a say in it . . .
I really hate how the Pro-(whatever) trolls pop out of the woodwork every time a story like this shows up. While I can understand the mixture of passion and ignorance in the under-20 crowd (ignorance not being an insult here, but merely a statement of fact: they DON'T yet know squat about what they are talking about but rather just parroting propaganda they are fed) - most of the trolls aren't that crowd. Just like you are condeming these people for engaging their genitals without engaging their brains, why don't many of you engage your brains before engaging your mouths (or in this case: fingers)?
a) People have engaged in spontaneous, risky sex since the first primitive couple were going at it and heard bear/wolf/whatever in the bushes and decided to finish before they ran away. The ability to think clearly when aroused is highly impaired in both sexes even before beer was invented. Grow up already and deal with the fact that it is GOING to happen.
b) For those of us who are Christians - yeah, it still happens to us. And while you are fumbling around for the perfect verse to condemn someone, please remember that the one you are actually looking for in all moral matters is, "Judge not lest ye be judged." ALL the rest are directives from God to YOU, not for YOU to OTHERS. Your 'message' and mission to others is to live YOUR life as an example, not to beat and berate people with the Bible. Well, that is what Christ commands, and if we are to call ourselves Christians, we should probably listen to Him.
c) ProLife/ProChoice: Ok folks, think for a moment: Both sides have been around going on 40+ years as official organizations. The fight is STILL at the 'Roe v Wade' point. HUNDREDS of lawyers of both sides have drafted hundreds of laws that don't pass Constitutional muster; a challenge even a law STUDENT could pass. The leadership of BOTH sides makes millions of dollars personally in salary and benefits every year. The politicians who come down on one side or the other take in millions of dollars in 'contributions' every year. Do you REALLY think either side is actually TRYING to win anymore? What? And have to find a REAL job? In THIS market? Drop both groups already - turn your time and efforts (and dollars) to ways to actually deal with the problem of supporting orphans and supplying aid to young, single mothers of unplanned pregnancies to give the women involved an option. Abortions, legal or not, will happen - they have occurred throughout history: grow up already and deal with it. Treat the problem (of the women not feeling they have another option plus the social stygma) instead of the symptom for a change and quit making a lot of parasites rich.
Finally - for all the hot-heads, bigots and idiots: if you are going to rant and vent, at least get your facts straight:
Tolerance INCLUDES yourself tolerating others with different views
The Tea Party includes as many ProChoice as ProLife members. Its views are focused on what you do with your vote and responsible government instead of the pointless arguement of responsible sex
Many ProLife supporters also support welfare for poor mothers (not to mention having a number of other organizations offering financial support) - those are two separate issues
The reading (much less study) of the Bible lowering ability to think... ok, that is just so stupid that I have difficulty rebutting it without being incredibly insulting. Accepting ANY belief system (even a secular one - which Athiesm is: you are believing in something for which there is no proof and accepting it as fact) dogmatically and closemindly reduces the ability to ACCEPT other points of view or think clearly.
Yes, Gecko, you're exactly right. However, there are times when I lose my temper when I read feedback on threads like these and I see some moron post
1.2 million murders. all in the name of a 'good time.'
These religious trolls go from thread to thread and make comments where it's completely irrelevant about abortion being murder, blah blah blah, etc., etc.
I've ignored dozens and dozens of them but on occasion I lose it. This was one of those occasions.
The fact that the Tea Party includes such hypocrites blows my mind. I could never go against my own principles in that way.
The fact that Sarah Palin herself had an abortion when she was in college, and considered having an abortion when she found herself pregnant with a Downs Syndrome baby makes her an absolutely disgusting hypocrite in my eyes. That she's the poster child of admiration for conservatives in spite of her pretenses makes my head spin.
I'm bigoted against bigots and I hate a hypocrite.
No woman should have to ask permission from a man whether she can have an abortion. That would be putting women back into submission to men again.
ThinkAboutIt, you're wrong and foolish. What about rape and incest?
Great post Gecko. You are a truly wise person. Nearly everything you have written resonates. That being said, disbelief in spite of evidence is an act faith. Disbelief that results from the absence of evidence is a logical conclusion. There is a difference. The argument that you allude to (believers and nonbelievers are logically equal) is not valid, imo.
One last comment to clarify my last sentence as it sounds like I am taking a side. I believe the depths of life are more then what can be articulated logically so I don't see the need for just one or the other (believers and nonbelievers). Many of the universe's answers are found within.
To shorten my previous post....give both parents the right to decide if an abortion should happen or not and if one of the two parents say they want the child and will take full responsibility then the mother should give birth and the abortion not allowed. You may (would) see less unwanted pregnancies....??? I am a father where the woman I was with got pregnant. I wanted that child dearly but I had no rights to this decision and had experience my child being killed. That child is not here today because I had no right to save him/her. He or she would have been 14 sometime last month.
You're mistaken. The only difference would be that illegal abortions would cause women to die of infections and botched abortions. When abortion was illegal only poor women were unable to obtain them. Just like today, back then women with resources were able to get whatever they wanted.
You're allowing your disappointment to override historical facts, ThinkAboutIt. Here's another idea, which may be painful for you to contemplate: perhaps she didn't want to have a lifelong connection to you? That's what a living child is, you know, it's a connection between two people. If the two of you didn't get along, if she was in school, if she had other plans for her life, why should she have stopped them to give you a child? Pregnancy is uncomfortable and full of dangers. It's the most difficult time in a woman's life. Some women die from complications of pregnancy. Some have strokes, some never recover from the health problems that arrive with pregnancy. You make it seem as though she was meant to provide a child for you. We aren't walking uteruses.
What if your child had been born with a birth defect or a learning disability? Would you have given up working and stayed home to take care of him/her full time? The mother's always expected to deal with these things and she has to expect that something like that can tie her down for the rest of her life.
There must be a real emotional connection with a woman for her to want to give a man a child. It's a huge investment in time and love and resources. A one night stand or a short term relationship isn't enough now nor is being a sperm donor and impregnating a woman sufficient. It's her choice now.
Whether it makes a difference to you or not, she knows the age her child would be, too.
debate with Peridot...there are risks with every pregnancy...There is a commitment with every child born that is honored (or not) by father and/or mother...every child that is born we all start with the assumption that the child will be healthy and the parent will take care of them, we don't start with the assumption that the parent won't take care of the child or that he or she will not be healthy. If the desire and commitment is there and shown..that is the beauty of giving the child the chance when there is at least one parent with that desire. We don't kill or terminate anything on what ifs...if one parent wants no connection with the other parent then they don't stay connected. She relinquishes her rights if she wants.
the other possibility is she may have cheated and didn't want that other persons child or her current mate to know. it can be determined early on through DNA before the child is terminated, the truth would be known early on who's child it is. If both parents of the child don't want him or her then that is what they live with and the laws today seem to be OK with that.
I am pro-choice and against no-choice, but that is what I as a father have in today's laws. no choice....I would rather have a choice. the laws have developed that we are all equal....except here...as a father I have no-choice.
Again, with a law of equal-choice maybe contraceptives would be taken more seriously.
Or you could, you know, just plan ahead and do what I do... Just have no game whatsoever and be ugly, boring, and poor enough to not get laid.
I have to say, it works every time.
Aw, you poor guy! If you lived close by I'd invite you over.
Or, one could use a condom. They do help. My husband and I avoided unwanted pregnancies for seven years using condoms alone. Serious.
Buying batteries is a lot more effective than a condom and the morning after pill put together.. lol
Why don't you just keep your pants on and try staying sober for a change. You just might find the New Year will be a new year.
Does anyone remember Rome?
None should worry about it and reading the Bible tonight is a awesome idea and I will be doing just that. Happy New Year everyone.
Just for the record, my Bible-reading friends have way more orgasms with their spouses than my other friends do hooking up with strangers : )
BUT bible reading lowers the ability to think for oneself. Not worth it.
A-rand said nothing about a Bible.
What does Rome have to do with anything?
ka56: My bible reading friends (at least the girls) tell me the complete opposite. And they get grossed out by anything other than missionary and some believe it is only for reproduction, not pleasure.

Instead of sticking it into the "baby hole", try sliding it into one (or both) of the other two holes that can't get the girl pregnant...
That's just nasty. lol
It's also lacking in imagination... there are at least 6 holes you can use if you're creative/persistant enough that won't cause pregnancy :)
Sign of our feminist times. HIV people; keep that in mind the next time you want that "hot", likely married, guy or girl.
You are perverting the name of feminism for your own insecurities. Grow up.

I think I lurve you :) Very nice statement. Let's be pro-active instead of re-active to our difficulties.
Yes, Gecko, you're exactly right. However, there are times when I lose my temper when I read feedback on threads like these and I see some moron post
October 5 is the most common birthday in the USA. That's the 278th day of the year. The human gestation period is usually estimated at 280 days.
Happy New Year to you and all those clumps of cells!
