Jack you are really something. As much as you can't stand a black man in the Whitehouse, not everything is Obama's fault. Some things are the fault of old George W. And somethings are just your own ignorant selfs fault.
I wonder how many people died from a direct result of me doing burnouts in my cars all those years when I was younger? I couldn't keep a set of tires on my cars, they knew how to build muscle cars back then. Wow, I feel like crap now knowing that. Now people will start legal actions against drag strips and race tracks all over the country! Great going Sweden! Jeesh!!!
choosing the wrong religion is more dangerous to your health. just pick up a history book. no need to waste money on studies.... 300+ years of crusades were already conducted to test the theory

not enough salt

driving on black ice without studded tires (sorry, studless aren't as good no matter what you try to tell me - tried em' already)
driving on black ice WITH studded tires!!! (our newest arrival)
On and on.... and on.... and on.... I like my studded tires and have been harassed every season about "all the damage" they do to the roads - that I pay for with my taxes! But since that hasn't worked, let's just make it another 'health hazard' so it's everyone's business!!!
But how many people drive down the road with their windows open in the winter time and how many people have studded tires in the first place. My car has an air infiltration system in the car and filters out the bad air.
"Microscopic road debris kicked up as the tires' spiky metal posts meet the asphalt could pose risks to health, not only for drivers, but also for the people living near highways, Swedish scientists suggest."
Is there no end to the stupidity these people promote?
O.K.....maybe I don't understand the concept of studded tires..,(but I do live in the "lake effect snow" belt).
It's winter...aren't vehicle windows usually closed??? ( so, maybe the particles come in through the heater vents.) As for the people living near the roads..not sure how far the particles are going to be thrown. I drive behind snow plows now and again, and don't see the "snirt" (snow/dirt) being thrown more than 20 or 30 feet.
You guys are right funding for yet another stupid study...at least it's not OUR money (surprised at that, though....LOL!)
Watch, some day they'll tell us due to a health study, we're no longer allowed to drive with our windows down, cause its bad for our health. Gimmie a break!!
The tires remain popular in Nordic locations ... where motorists believe they give a better grip, improve traction, and make them feel safer on icy or snow-covered roads.
Why the phrase "motorists believe"? Is there some doubt about whether metal spikes grip ice better? I've walked in cleats, tennis shoes, and dress shoes. Cleats grab best; tennis shoes slip a little; dress shoes slide all over the place. To subtly suggest that studs don't help with traction reeks of an agenda: paving the way for outlawing studded tires.
You just pass out. So, parents, when your kid threatens to hold his/her breath (do they do that anymore?), let them! You will have a few moments of peace! LOL
If studded snow tires on cars can cause all that road damage, what about the road damage caused by semis using several sets of tire chains?
Fact: I would much rather use studded snow tires than have to sit waiting 24 hours for the Grapevine to reopen just because a few inches of snow fell on the highway.
Fact: All-season tires really aren't!!!
And yes, I'll agree that the brake dust issue is far worse than the studded tire issue when it comes to micro-particulates in the air that we all breathe.
I've snowboarded for nine years with all season tires, never stuck once...big trucks use changes as little as possible, normally when the DOT posts the have to for saftey, compared to six months of 24/7 studs
It's not out of the realm of possibility. We use many harmful materials in everything we build. However, how much exposure is actually needed to be affected? Unless your licking the street, I fail to see how people are going to fall ill from it.
Please remember that we are now using paving, both concrete and bitumen. as a means to dispose of waste, some of it hazardous: low grade scrap metals, plastics, electronics (including circuit boards and integrated circuitry), low grade radio-actives (In paving, the disbursal is just above normal background radiation.), as well as used paving material. Dust dispersion can be direct or indirect. Dust from the road can fall on fields, to be raised by plowing, cultivation and harvesting. This will convect dust higher into the air than the direct dispersion. Oddly some highways already have dead zones as a result of the accumulation of rubber dust along the shoulder. Brake dust, some still containing asbestos, is also an issue.
For all who want to poo-poo all this, remember the smog deaths of London and southern England in the 1950's. Remember asbestos. Remember PCB. Remember DDT. On the near horizon, phtalates (used in plastics like PVC) and lithium (the basis of the next-gen batteries). All known to kiil the healthy through cancers.
They still do not know where all the rubber goes from normal tires let alone studded tires!!! I m sure we are all inhaling and drinking and eating tire particles along with everything else we trash this place with!!!
When it rains after a dry spell the creeks in my area which receive stormwater/road runoff always turn very dark. I think that is some of the old burned off tire stuff that gets washed off the roads.
The real story here is that roads are made of toxic materials. Not that this will surprise anyone. It's not the studded tires causing the problem, it's the toxic and poisonous materials we use in everything around us.
Something just doesn't smell right about this article... It reminds me of that TSA article that was posted trying to minimize the idea of radiation concerns through the new scanners.
It just seems convenient that it's released just as budget contstraints are becoming a bigger issue. You think it's got anything to do with the idea that studded tires hasten road deterioration?
In IL, over the past recent years snow removal has become atrocious. Equipping winter tires on my car is the only way that I can commute. ...and if they can't plow, you're *@#$ right that I'm going to get studded tires!
I hear they say loss of traction and crashing your car is also hazardous to your health.
Of more concern to me is how annoyingly loud studded tires are to anyone within two miles of a road where they're in use.
I like how the article shows its bias against the use of studded tires by effectively suggesting that their benefits are all in the head:
The tires remain popular in Nordic locations, such as Sweden, where the study was done, and in Norway and Finland, where motorists believe they give a better grip, improve traction, and make them feel safer on icy or snow-covered roads.
It's not about what drivers "believe" or "feel". The effectiveness of studded tires in northern climates (and their detrimental effects on roadways) can NOT be disputed.
Next time, Mr. Nierenberg, leave your personal opinion out of it.
Agreed! But it's not just their own traction that helps. It's the fact that they dig in and help break up ice, Regular snow tires can have a polishing effect on Ice which makes it slicker for EVERYONE.
"Studded tires may pose risks to your lungs, heart"
This title was rather misleading...I thought, yeah, and the rest of your body if you get run over by a car with them!!!! LOL. What a waste of news reporting!
The article specifically refers to those living near the roads, like 95%+ of us do. Infiltration air is NOT filtered unless done intentionally. People do not live entirely indoors. And, where does your car's cabin air come from? Unfiltered intakes at the front of the body. You may not breathe your exhaust and road dust, but you breathe that of everyone in front of you. Try following another car on gravel roads during a dry summer.
Are you kidding me?! Ugh, it is obvious that you were not into biology. Our lungs are fragile to many things (simply put) and without those white blood cells which line our lungs we wold not survive very long. Our short existence would be quite unpleasant.
Well here is the classic example of a choice between two evils. You can ruin your health with studded snow tires or you can slide off an icy road and tumble down a cliff. Either way you look at it, driving in snowy weather is lethal. :)
The majority of people that use studded tires drive on ice and snow not on warm dry pavement. The toxic chemicals the road department dump on the roads to provide traction and eliminate the ice are the real danger.
Take a look at the front wheels of every car on the highway......that "DUST" you see accumulating on the wheel is also accumulating on the linings of your lungs. Now "google" the material composition of brake linings for an eye-opening revelation that NO ONE talks about!
Brakes used to be made of asbestos, but was phased out.Oh NO!! Now those annoying lawyer adds are going to add "anyone who has driven or worked on the brakes of any vehicle over the past 100 years may also be at risk of Mesothelioma". For a free consultation, call toll free, 1-800-dropded.
Nice....and what was it we were just debating about "imagine for a minute being homeless and having to beg from highway medians.."?.. like the DJ voiced homeless guy?
Yet another problem caused by too many people.
No Mo' aliens, Nomobama.
Jack you are really something. As much as you can't stand a black man in the Whitehouse, not everything is Obama's fault. Some things are the fault of old George W. And somethings are just your own ignorant selfs fault.
Obama's black... The roads are black.... coincidence? I think not.
Just kidding, its Bush's fault. No, I'm kidding again, its just my own ignorant self being ignorant.
Wow, Jack! Did your "1 Uncle" bounce you on his knee too many times when you were a child? Strange post, indeed.
I wonder how many people died from a direct result of me doing burnouts in my cars all those years when I was younger? Studded tires turns to Obama. Does he even use them?
That along with:
smoking - second hand smoke - third hand smoke (no joke)
fireplaces burning wood (campfires too)
too much cholesteral
not enough of the right cholesteral
overweight

So, is this the new report that proves that studded tires cause Autism??
But how many people drive down the road with their windows open in the winter time and how many people have studded tires in the first place. My car has an air infiltration system in the car and filters out the bad air.
So Sweden wastes money on studies too.
Ya think?
Let's just get it over with and do a study to see if cancer is hereditary in lab rats.
Was it a foreign grant? Guess you know where I"m going with this.
HERE'S a scientific breakthrough: Ashtrays and cigarette lighters in cars are bad for the heart and lungs. Can I get my million dollar grant now?
JK, maybe we could do a joint research/study about gnats.
Conclusion: they're pests. Now show me the money!
I heard they also did a study on studded condoms.
LOLOLOLOL
That was truly funny! :O
Oh, what were the results of the study?! LOLOLOL
Do gnats have gnuts??
Just don't breathe when you are driving.
@all of you
LOL
I am amazed -- Living causes death! I should get some funding to prove this theory.
"Microscopic road debris kicked up as the tires' spiky metal posts meet the asphalt could pose risks to health, not only for drivers, but also for the people living near highways, Swedish scientists suggest."
Is there no end to the stupidity these people promote?

Actually, this is about the dumbest friggin' thing I've heard of in a month of Sundays.
I would venture to guess that ANY tire is going to kick up microscopic debris.
John in Texas-486419: Yours was the best and most sensible. Thanks
Watch, some day they'll tell us due to a health study, we're no longer allowed to drive with our windows down, cause its bad for our health. Gimmie a break!!
Indeed. Look at this excerpt from the article:
Why the phrase "motorists believe"? Is there some doubt about whether metal spikes grip ice better? I've walked in cleats, tennis shoes, and dress shoes. Cleats grab best; tennis shoes slip a little; dress shoes slide all over the place. To subtly suggest that studs don't help with traction reeks of an agenda: paving the way for outlawing studded tires.
More concern should be from tire and brake pads wear that have been spreading minute particulates in the air for years and then settles in your lungs.
Don't give them any ideas. We might be peddling soon. Oops, still dealing with tires.
The only way to combat this disturbing trend is to hold your breath.
And if you over do the holding breath thing...you die also...ha
Send funding for my common sense study, to gordo13..thanks
LOL
You just pass out. So, parents, when your kid threatens to hold his/her breath (do they do that anymore?), let them! You will have a few moments of peace! LOL
Yeah and without them in many situations death comes much faster!
If studded snow tires on cars can cause all that road damage, what about the road damage caused by semis using several sets of tire chains?

Let's face it, the polluted air we breathe, the polluted water we drink, the contaminated food we eat, what's one more minor irritant?
Ain't life grand?
Well, guess now we should all load up on HeLium and fart out our backsides and fly....
George, so long as its not sulfur. Rotten eggs anyone? Come to think of it, remember the early catalytic converters?
That is why you s...t for brains will be lost one day.You have your head stack up your ass.

really? come on. can't countries spend their money in a better way than all these stupid studies.
The real story here is that roads are made of toxic materials. Not that this will surprise anyone. It's not the studded tires causing the problem, it's the toxic and poisonous materials we use in everything around us.
Technically, everything is a carcinogen in the right context.
Like, you remember them saying that you shouldn't cook your steak well done because the burnt particles are a carcinogen? ...or french fries?
Something just doesn't smell right about this article... It reminds me of that TSA article that was posted trying to minimize the idea of radiation concerns through the new scanners.

Slow day in the News Room.
I do not believe that white blood cells line the inside of human lungs. Also, to have any validity, you need to take air samples inside the vehicle.
Joann,
The article specifically refers to those living near the roads, like 95%+ of us do. Infiltration air is NOT filtered unless done intentionally. People do not live entirely indoors. And, where does your car's cabin air come from? Unfiltered intakes at the front of the body. You may not breathe your exhaust and road dust, but you breathe that of everyone in front of you. That's a great point! ...and what about the chunks of road that the plows take with them as sparks fly across their dragging blades?
you could add just about anything to a petri dish of human white blood cells and see chemical markers of inflammation yes?
Yes it looks like the study proves that you should not inject studded tire dust into your body. Doesn't prove anything about breathing.
Seriously I think there is a type of hard plastic tire stud that does not damage the road surface as much as the metal ones.
What a waste of whatever government money.
You know oxygen @ a concentration of 21% for 72 years will kill 50% of all Americans, eventually it will kill everyone!
So will drinking water for 70 something years.
Take a look at the front wheels of every car on the highway......that "DUST" you see accumulating on the wheel is also accumulating on the linings of your lungs. Now "google" the material composition of brake linings for an eye-opening revelation that NO ONE talks about!

You can still buy asbestos brake pads in many places and they are the cheapest.
Nice....and what was it we were just debating about "imagine for a minute being homeless and having to beg from highway medians.."?.. like the DJ voiced homeless guy?
