You are indeed a very lucky man. I had throat cancer so I can fully identity with your issues. In addiion to ending up with dry mouth, I also lost my taste buds for nearly a year, lost about 35 llbs and my wife made large cups of hot chocolate with loads of whipped crean....that saved me from needing a feeding tube. It has now been 12 years for me and you will never forget it.
Hang in there Michael. I'm 4 years post treatment for throat cancer in July. Don't worry about the weight too much. I lost 40 pounds and only gained 10 back and I feel great.
I hope you boys are right. I do not understand why they cannot or will not disclose better said, what sort of cancerous tumor it was. That would preclude a better knowledge of whether it can reoccur. I have had 2 friends that have had throat cancer. Neither of them lived past three years to tell of it, as a matter of fact, both died within a year. I hope he is one of the lucky ones.
I was diagnosed with lung cancer about the same time as we heard about Michael. My treatments ended about a month ago. I feel great, especially compared to how I felt during treatment. Things look good at this point according to the Pet scan so I feel very lucky. My cancer was Stage 3A and there is still a possibility for surgery. I agree with Michael's comment about the deep feeling you have for your family and friends......the support I have been receiving has been amazing and I will never forget it.
I recently got done with 7 weeks of radiation and chemo for tongue and lymph node cancer and mine had the HPV in it. Mine was Stage 4 due to the size of the mass on my tongue. I had to have a feeding tube inserted as I lost 31 pounds (from 134 to 103) in 3 weeks. I am slowly weaning from the PEG and my taste buds are slowly coming back. I had my treatments at the OSU James Cancer Hospital in Columbus OH and can't say enough good things about them. I had wonderful docs and nurses and 35 radiation treatments and 7 chemos. Turned down the surgery and go back this week for my first follow up.
I hope Michael does well in his recovery. I still get where I hit the wall everyday and not back to work yet but each day I feel alittle stronger.
My symptoms were trouble swallowing and extreme pain in my left ear. I was misdiagnosed for months by my primary care doc and went to an ENT who noticed I could not hold my tongue out straight. He stuck his finger down my throat and felt the hard mass on my tongue...........so if you can't hold your tongue out straight; get to a dentist or doc!!!!
My friends have meant the world to me and have been with me every step of the way. You find out how loved you are in tough times like this.
Thanks to your acting you have given so much pleasure to so many, now it is our turn to wish you all the best in your recovery, I think many people will be praying for you. All the best...................
Best of luck, Michael. I've had 2 friends with throat cancer and know how awful it can be. Many, many people are sending you good thoughts for many years of health and happiness.
God bless you, Michael. Your courage and optimism are making a difference in your recovery and I am happy that you have such a beautiful family to keep you optimistic and hopeful. I have every good hope, wish and expectations for a long and healthy future for you and I look forward to seeing you in many more excellent performances onscreen.
Bravo to Douglas for the upbeat attitude. I'm sure he has had many private moments of fear, but his public persona helps me give him back a smile. I'm looking forward to seeing him back up on the big screen in no time, and hope he'll be there for many years to come. He's one of my favorites!
I sure have been paying attention to his illness and want it to work out. He sure is starting to look like his dad more and more. Also I saw a picture of him younger and then a picture of his son Cameron, sure see the resemblance there too. Funny how you can't see something and then get a certain glimpse and see it. Just with my daughter, she has lighter hair and i'm darker hair, and just could not see it when others would say we looked just alike until one day she put on a dark brown wig and bingo, I could see it.
We are sure all concerned and want you to pull out of it with not too many side effects from the radiation as well as chemotherapy, or as I read, the new normal afterwards. You are such a cutiepie "smile"
I'm a survivor of this treatment (5 years) and the dry mouth is PERMANENT! As they move from IMRT radiation to Cyberknife hopefully the salivary glands can be spared.
Also a 5 year survivor. They told me to keep water with me at all times - I just avoid places that state NO BEVERAGES. Me and my water bottle are good friends. They also said the taste buds would come back, but 5 years later I'm still waiting. While dry mouth and related problems are a pain, they sure beat the alternative.
It sure is nice to hear some GOOD news !...The public today has a morphine type fixation with Bad news....My mom died last year of stage IV lung cancer. No-one on the planet is immune! I'm 51 and grew up watching Mr. Douglas, I couldn't believe his father was still alive.
As a survivor of cancer of the tonsil, 5 years I congratulate Michael Douglas. I saw my oncologists yesterday and continued to get a clean bill of health. While I've been told that reoccurrence is is ALMOST nil, there always is a possibility.

Aunt Bush, as I understand your concerns and desire to know, don't you think the man still deserves SOME privacy?
He may have very personal reasons for not wanting to reveal the cause or allowing all information to be openly presented to the public.
