You mean "one of the few species". I wonder what the gene is for compulsively correcting another's grammar...
Back on topic, I'm not surprised that some people are "just made for each other". I have a friend of the same gender who is about 15 years older than me and, ever since she moved away, I miss her terribly despite the fact that we correspond frequently and talk by phone.
I wouldn't expect anything definitive to come from these 'studies'.
Maybe this, maybe that, correlating by the casual, a gene linked by dopamine, perhaps epinephrine, perhaps......
I'd say face it; there's as many reasons for my picking my decor, my dogs, my clothes as there are bricks in the local community college. With all the people on the earth, there's bound to be some that are more compatable with others because of the 'as many bricks' theory.
Some things, science needs to concentrate on. Others, forget about it.....
Hah.... yeah, really. It seems the more you're attracted to someone, the more likely you're somehow related, so what's to come next? Your lovers now your brother, gentically we're attracted to ourselves and those genetically similar? Jerry Lee Lewis is going to be a forefather of the new age?
I mean really, money is going towards this.... OUR money?
Know some from West Va.; they've got aunts younger than their nieces and nephews who's cousins are their sisters mom and dads grandparents of their uncles and aunts.....
scary..... they're actually AHEAD of the times and have been in the right all along?
Don't these scientists know that we all come from a single female; therefore, are inbred idiots? -------------------------------------------------------------
I believe that is the RELIGIOUS point of view that we came from ONE FEMALE. Scientists have proven, without a doubt, that we did not come from one female. Just like they have proven that the Earth is more then 6000 years old. If you want to believe that you're an inbred idiot they go right ahead....
Fiscal Conservative is correct ... and they are tracing the footsteps of mankind through history based upon the analysis of both the maternal mitochondrial genetic links and the Y chromosome genetic links
It is called the "Atlas of the Human Journey - the Genographic Project"
They are showing the path of migration over the 6 continents over at least the past 40,000 yrs, at which time homosapien sapiens had 4 or 5 different races of humans like Neanderthals they co-existed harmoniously with and successfully intermated with (since we successfully mated, we couldnt be separate species - successfully mating means bearing FERTILE progeny as versus sterile progeny). Currently, based upon genetic analysis, we have only 1 race of humans left, homosapien sapiens and the genetics bottlenecked to the point we do not even have a sub-race within our one and only race.
One of my dad's closest friends was always like a brother to him. In fact his friend always called him brother and introduced him to others as his brother. They have the same last name (about as common in their area as 'Smith') so it people always accepted it. Well, at my father's mother's funeral the 'friend' showed up because his mother told him he had to go. Turns out they are indeed relatives, cousins of the 4th degree or something like that! We still get a kick out of that story.
In the USA, we are not legally considered "related" if we have more than 3 degrees of separation, however, in Europe and elsewhere and especially in the Christian religion ... anyone within 7 degrees of separation are considered family and too close for marriage/reproductive purposes without a special waiver from the church (like the royals marrying 1st cousins, etc). Any sexual activity within 7 degrees of separation is considered incest. In the US, since we didnt base our laws upon religion, we suffice with 3 levels of separation as the farthest extension of our family and can marry those beyond that level of separation without fearing incest charges. We have 1, and only 1, state in the USA (cant remember which one, but it is a south eastern state) that allows first cousins to legally marry. If they are catholic and in that state, even though civil law states they arent incestuous, their religion would if they dont get that special waiver by the church prior to "sexual relations".
I hate to argue with a comment that "sounds" so official but 26 states allow marriage of first cousins, along with all of Europe. It double the risk of birth defects from 2-3% to 4-6%. It is estimated that 80% of all marriages historically have been between first cousins, while only about 20% of current cousins are. In the US only about 1 in a 1000 marriages are between first cousins.
Recycled - The 4th Lateran Council, in 1215, rescinded the 7th degree rule, (which also included 'spiritual' relatives such as the son or daughter of a God Parent), setting the ban at the 4th degree.
Mmmmm.....so what about those who flock to another because of the other's wealth (material gain)?
or those who connect because of a similar trauma experienced (emotional support and gain)?
or those who are dog lovers and attend a dog training group every Saturday. Where's the genetic connection there? The humans get together because the genetics of their animals are 'similar' :)
Non-sexual attraction is more a product of admiring traits that one honors or greatly respects. There is obviously a chemical component to what we see in someone, though, I would give greater weight to one's lifetime of experiences, including pain/suffering, upbringing, education and existing relationships.
How often are we attracted to a person that displays the traits that we find lacking in our own lives. That is more seeking inspiration, in a new friend, than anything else. One does seem, though, to seek "friends" on blogs due to wanting to be recognized as sharing commonality. Maybe, we all need to spend more time OFF of the web and talking to real people.
There is something inside us which "drives" us, is what we read and heard in the past. If it´s part of our programming, in our genes, which drives us here and there in life, than it does make sense. From this standpoint I do agree to it.
I am personnally quite sure, that we´re all not "blank" when we come to earth, we all carry some info inside. And we depend on it.

LOL, proamerica-1148973! This story also begs the question, why don't more of us want to hang out with our actual family members?

So if you have a friend who becomes your lover are committing incest?

Come on really??? I bet any 5th grader could even leap to this conclusion! I hope there weren't too many government grants wasted on this study!
I slept at a Holiday Inn Express once and already knew that people friended people that were similar to them, even genetically.
Didn't even read the article, did ya?

Actually, I believe you're wrong. In the field of genetics, there absolutely is something referred to as the Mitochondrial Eve.

There is an interesting book based on this research: The 7 daughters of Eve., by Bryan Sykes.

Scientists are finally discovering that most people prefer to hang out with other people just like them. Especially the dumb ones.
Consider all 3 factors equally: nature-genes, nurture-parents, and the environment throughout the life.

Hmm - so I am not a real person? Then what am I, AI?
