This is a woman we should admire. She is a true American, not heroic, but a fighter.
Palin could take a lesson from someone who walks the walk, not an idiot who can only talk, blame and complain yet offers no value or solutions, only selfish rhetoric.
No ,Bobby Charles,YOU shut up. Unless you're in third grade, which seems highly likely. Then you also get a time-out. BTW, fadman is rubber and you're glue...
I agree that this women is a true American. She has devoted most of her life to improving our country.
I disagree that Palin needs to take any lessons from her. Gabby will have her hands full with recovering and does not have time to teach anyone how to be a good citizen other than by example. Maybe in a couple of years. I don't understand why Palin's name even comes up in this discussion.
There is a guy that I know named Bill (Not Clinton) that is a real jerk; self-centered, egotistical, mean and a bigot. I would like to use this forum to tell everyone that Bill is an idiot and no one should ever listen to what he has to say.
This is great news for her and her family. I hope she does well and makes a full recovery and can return to her job, if that is what she wants. A near death experience causes one to realize their own mortality and they sometimes change directions. I just hope this young woman lives the rest of her life doing what is most important to her.
I'm trying my best to avoid blaming the heated poticial rhetoric filled with hate/gun rhetoric. It really doesn't help for the founder of the Tucson TeaParty Trent Humphries to come out and say that it was Giffords fault because she didn't have security body guards due to death threats and the vandalizing of her office. And the most likely culprits of the death threats and vandalizing were right wing Republicans, Tea Partyers.
Excuse me Trent, but death threats and vandalizing go beyond freedom of speech and lively debate. What would have helped is the Tea Party owning being a part of the problem and toning down the rhetoric.
If I am to avoid reaching obvious conclusions about Jared Loughner's politics, I am left with concerns about Arizona gun laws and someone like Jared falling through the cracks of mental health services and going untreated. This is especially the case that since the shooting, mental health services have been cut back in Arizona and there is a proposal for college professors carrying hand guns.
Bodyguards for Gifford most likely would have had their own Glock hand guns to fire back. Then you would have had Jared and others firing high caliber hand guns that were semi automatic pop-pop-popping at each other up to 30 times in a row with large magazines. Each of those bullets would have an extended range limit. You could miss your target and hit someone watering their lawn a half mile away.
The answer to gun issues is not more guns. It is a thorny issue, especially in Arizona, but we MUST consider the gun laws necessary to make future repeats of this type of shooting impossible. For example, when John Hinckley tried to assassinate Ronald Reagan, James Brady was hit. He became a vocal advocate for gun control and got laws passed to prevent the same type of incident from happening again. Under the Brady Laws, Jared would not have been able to purchase that type of hand gun. Those laws expired during the Bush administration. They need to be reinstated.
Arizona is an open carry state. People that have gun permits can carry their weapons in open anywhere in Arizona. Even if Jared showed up in costume looking like Wyatt Earp, no one would have stopped him.
We need a bipartisan effort to prevent shootings like this from ever happening again. Republicans were inspired toward passing gun control legislation when it was Reagan as the target. We need the same type of reassessment of gun control laws.
Giffords carried a Glock 9 mm herself and mentioned that she was a goood shot with it. No amount of legislation is going to prevent this type of incident. Jared could as easily purchased his gun from his local drug dealer. How does it work that if you are willing to murder 6 people a person would say, I better not use a gun because that would be illegal?
I lived in Tucson some number of years ago. The open carrying of guns works very well there. Certainly a lot better than the restrictive cities such as Washington D C , Detroit, Chicago and New York. By the way, no gun permit is needed to carry a gun openly or concealed in Arizona. If Jared had been carrying openly, he certainly would have attracted attention. People intent on committing a crime didn't carry openly.
Instead of blaming guns for this incident maybe more emphasis should be placed on the drugs that distorted Jareds mind. Nothing is going to make a repeat of this impossible. Every anti gun law passed just makes it easier for the criminals and mental defectives to procure guns. The Brady Bill is proof of this. What is needed is fewer laws and learn to enforce the laws that exist.
Toasty, can't you just leave it alone? Some of us find comfort in the idea that there's a greater force at work in the universe. Yes, it took quick actions from her staffer and surgeons, but there was still something awfully amazing going on that allowed a bullet to pass through her brain without killing her or to this point at least causing massive, irreparable damage. You can call it luck, I can call it a miracle. There's really no need to disagree on the subject, just accept that other people see the world differently and stifle it.
I just think thanks should be given where credit is due. The heroic actions of people on the scene that day, and the incredibly dedicated staff of University Medical Center saved her life, and I think it's very important to credit them with both her life, and for saving others from making the death toll even higher.
To the antiGod crowd. What none of you know is to what extent faith in God hashelped Giffords directly or indirectly. The surgeon, for example may be as good as he is because of his faith in God and the resultant dedication to be the best he can. Did God want this all to happen? Of course not, but all good actions following the pulling of thetrigger may have everything to do with faith in god by the parties involved.
I am THRILLED that the Congresswoman is alive and improving well enough to perhaps go home on Friday. Then MAYBE the MSNBC editors will get this stale story off the front page and find another newsworthy topic to exploit ad nauseum.
Steve my point is .. its foolish to say god wanted her alive .. but god wanted a innocent 9 yr old girl and 5 other people DEAD ... You also saying god wanted part of her head blown away ... Just be realistic .. God has nothing to do with this stuff .. just like God diesnt when a 5 yr old kid dies of cancer .. its just life and some of us get lucky > often others who a the scum of the world survive and the innocent die .. you telling me this is god's action

I don't know who or what gets credit for Rep. Giffords survival and recovery. I suspect luck had something to do with it. If the bullett had been a touch to the left or right, or had traveled 1/64th of an inch farther, the results might've been different. Some get comfort crediting a higher power and I have no problem with that. I don't think we need to be critical of those who take that comfort. No one looks more intelligent while taking swings at others.
From something terrible and of unspeakable evil, comes something good and beautiful … Christina Taylor Green makes a difference beyond her years.
“She wanted to make a difference in her life. She wanted to make her mark, and she did so in so powerful a way that even she cannot imagine,” said Bishop Gerald Kicanas during his homily.
Make no mistake about it folks, good always conquers over evil. From something terrible always comes something good. Such is the case of the eye-tearing and senseless loss of 9 year old Christina Taylor Green whose life was taken far to soon at the hands of an evil madman Jared Loughner. Christina Taylor Green was born on a day of unimaginable horror, September 11, 2001 and died on another, January 8, 2011 during the Tucson massacre. From the terrible loss of the little 9 year old girl who tugged at our hearts, COMES LIFE. The organs of Christina-Taylor Green have been donated to a Boston-area child. Christina Green lives on … and saves lives in death.
God is in charge; he supervises the circulation of good and evil; and He does it in a way that satisfies his Goodness, that is, with total respect for man's freedom. Let Lewis speak. "In the fallen and partially redeemed universe we may distinguish (1) the simple good descending from God, (2) the simple evil produced by rebellious creatures, and (3) the exploitation of that evil by God for His redemptive purpose, which produces (4) the complex good to which accepted suffering and repented sin contribute. […] A merciful man aims at his neighbour's good as so does 'God's' will, consciously co-operating with 'the simple good'. A cruel man oppresses his neighbour and so does simple evil. But in doing such evil he is used by God, without his knowledge or consent, to produce the complex good — so that the first man serves God as a son, and the second as a tool. For you will certainly carry out God's purpose, however you act, but it makes a difference to you whether you serve like Judas or like John".

Toasty, I call shenanigans. You and Texas Rancher seem to share one goal and one goal only- to intentionally inflame. You knew exactly the reaction you would get when you posted your comment. It only furthers the rhetoric so many claim they want to see die. You are entitled to your beliefs as is everyone else here but there are times where, as adults, we just have to know when to leave well enough alone.
Well .. i will close with .. Sadly humans have been harming and killing each other since day 1 ... and sadly this will not stop ... but we fight on and hope to improve the world and the people in it ... and i wish GL to the Congresswoman ....

G Giffords is my congresswoman. I have lived in Tucson most of my life and worked at one of her fathers stores in the 1970's. She is in my opinion an exemplary politician and public servant. She seeks common ground and avoids extremes that may be popular at the time. Despite the lies and misrepresentations from Jesse Kelly and the RNC and numerous other corporate funded attack groups in this recent election she retained her dignity and ran an honest campaign. If you are part of the recent politics of anger and hatred that is running amuck in this country, you need to find a way to better yourself and rise above this. People who have any foresight know that it will be short lived and can only do harm while it lasts. Do not take guns to political rallies. Do not scream down your congressperson at town halls. Do not listen to and believe the hate mongers. Strive to be part of a civil toned society and we will all be better for it.
Steve--We on the left condemn such rhetoric no matter whose mouth(even if it's the President's) it comes out of. When is the right going to own up to their vitriolic rhetoric?
The effectual fervent prayer of the righteous availeth much
Actually studies have shown intercessory prayer to be totally ineffectual. But I guess it gives people something to do while waiting for the Doctors to save people.
Right. And the use of gunsight crosshairs----errrrrrr, surveyor markers, was not inappropriate at all, according to Ms Pitbull with lipstick.
But criticizing her for using those symbols and exhorting her constituents to "reload"??? Well...the criticism is irresponsible and reprehensible, says Ms Grizzly, the self-made perpetual victim.
Heh, I do have to admit, New. I honestly agree that Sarah Palin has as much comprehension of the United States Constitution as a dog with a brain the size of an easter egg.
Being a surveyor myself, I never looked at those cross-hairs and thought, "huh, lookit the surveyor marks." I have asked all the other surveyors that I know and nobody thought they were surveyor's marks. There is a surveyor's symbol that is a circle with two lines in it like that, but it almost always has one upper and one lower quadrant filled in, in red. The remaining quadrants are filled in, in white. It is never used on maps but is used in company and association logos.
Palin must think everybody is as stupid as she is if she thinks anybody buys her lame dissimulation.
I'm praying for Ms. Giffords as well. But a full recovery, absent a miracle of immense proportions, is not possible. MSNBC should temper its enthusiasm.
I also think that a way too positive picture is being painted. Having been thru something similiar with a family member it seems clear that the damaged she sustained is severe and how much the brain can recover is limited. The miracle has already happened...that she survived.
I do hope the left will finally stop with all their hateful rhetoric and calls for silencing and even death to those they disagree with but I fear that is a miracle we will never see!
Thank God that her health care medical insurance is the one that was written into law by the good old boy Washington politicians. As for the other shooting victims' medical expenses--- wipe all saving, sell the house, move in with the in-laws ??
geeez, i would think her insurance is maxed out..come on a hole in the head, that's some serious stuff..i pray she recovers without any further problems..i find this recovery hard to believe without long term hospitalization or delicate care...
Must have been shot with a full metal jacketed shell, or else half of her head would have been blown off. She is very lucky. I only had to read the first post to see where Palin is already mentioned. You Palin haters really need to take a breath and calm down, jezzzz...
The only reason it has become a political issue is that those who don't know what they are talking about make assumptions (and comments) without knowing what is going on.
They aren't trying to make it a political issue. They just want to blame Palin. I don't like the woman, but these people are out in orbit. Should a simple IQ test requiring one point over idiot to vote be introduced?
To be fair, Palin is far from the only person who contributed to the attack. She's just the only one with blood on her hands who's on national television day after day actually trying to portray herself as a victim.
"If this Congress keeps going the way it is, people are really looking toward those Second Amendment remedies."
- Sharron Angle, former member of the Nevada State Assembly
"If ballots don't work, bullets will."
- Joyce Kaufman, Radio host, Tea Party activist
"Let me tell you what you've got to do. You've got to make the fellow scared to come out of his house. That's the only way that you're going to win. That's the only way you're going to get these people's attention."
- Congressman Allen West
"I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous . . . The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
- Currently serving United States Congresswoman from Minnesota Michele Bachmann, leader of the Tea Party Caucus, paraphrasing Thomas Jefferson
"Sarah Palin has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district and when people do that, they've gotta realize there are consequences to that action."
- Currently serving Congresswoman from Arizona Gabrielle Giffords
Statements. Palin didn't pull the trigger, but a mentally ill man in Arizona did; that is a fact. When Obama talked about bringing a gun if they bring a knife, punishing your enemies, and making those who disagree sit in the back of the bus, where was the outrage? Sensible people know he was not making suggestions, but speaking figuratively.
why do stupid people blame palin about this shooting. explain to me. what did she do that no other politican has done. obama has talked trash about republicans. he has sued arizona. now he acts like he cares. i dont get it.!! the shooter was a nut. always will be nuts on both sides of the parties. palin has a right to talk.!! the rest talk. msnbc talks. joy behar talks trash. no-one blames them. i feel for a innocent little girl that died. this senator should know to have top security there. especially she had gotten death threats. stupid.!!!!
The Dems had a chart out at the same time as Palin's that had targets on states they hope to swing into their column. In my opinion harmless metaphors, but very hypocritical to call on side out and act as if the other did not do the same.
Giffords is not a Senator, she is in the House of Representatives. Security would likely not have had time to respond in the first few seconds. People would have still been killed and wounded. Death threats go with the territory of being a public official. The shooter is definitely insane, but he has still not been linked to ay political party.
I have to say some of you are just ignorant. This was the action of an unstable person who was displeased with government and not political parties. To say Palin had anything to do with this just shows you probably need as much help as Loughner needed.
oh because his action was triggerd by delusion and of course all people, right, center left and tea party are equally delusional......look in the mirror Toasty!
I'm glad she is okay she seems to be a remarakable woman. The media should let us know how the rest of the injured are as each and everyone that was shot are remarakable in their own ways. To often we don't look at the common folk. Gabby I be praying for a full recovery for you as you sound like the type to pull thru.
I have read all over the Internet and on these MSNBC pages how this was all the liberals fault. Less than an hour after the news of the shooting became public, conservatives were blaming Obama and liberals. Typical con?
Hey everyone: Screw politics. I can't imagine anyone posting here wishes her anything but well. I'm amazed at the news that she is going home. Let's just leave it at that, OK? Some things are too fundamental to spin, regardless of your political views.
Full agreement from me, Rick. I'm starting to think that those who keep trying to push politics (left, right, blue, red, democrat or republican) into this tragedy are as obsessed and delusional as Loughner.
I tend to also say that this is a miracle. As a retired RN in Critical Care Units, I have never seen a person with such an in and out gunshot to the head, walk out of the hospital with mental facilities intact.
Why one cannot accept that miracles/divine intervention happens, is not for me to say, only I personally do believe that such is this case. As well as wishing the best for the Congresswoman and her family, when was the last time people rallied from all over the world for genuine concern and compassion? Perhaps this is one of many coming wake up calls for all human beings to learn to come together as ONE!
walk out of the hospital with mental facilities intact
Well, no one said she was walking out OR had her mental facilities intact. No one has mentioned her SPEAKING and the bullet went through the speech area. She will most likely never be 100% again, may never speak and may have lost other abilities. But if I were her I'd be happy if I could remember my family and have some quality of life. It is far too early to tell what her quality of life will be though.
Unfortunately, you are likely right, kaviaq, although the effects of a brain injury can be hard to predict sometimes. A 1 millimeter blood clot in the wrong place and a person drops dead; then there are cases like Phineas Gage from the 1800's who had a tamping rod shoot through his head, and yet he survived (albeit with a big personality change) for about 12 more years. I will predict that her receptive language abilities will be recovered; her expressive language abilities will probably remain significantly affected (I hope I'm wrong); and she will have some difficulties with decision making and executive functioning. Also, left frontal lobes injuries correlate with depression. On the hopeful side, her recovery so far has been spectacular, so MAYBE she'll be one of those rare cases that get a profound head injury and truly recover.
On the hopeful side, her recovery so far has been spectacular, so MAYBE she'll be one of those rare cases that get a profound head injury and truly recover.
Even if she never gets back to 100% or returns to work there seems to be a good chance she can still have a good life. And she certainly is making amazing progress!
This is a woman we should admire. She is a true American, not heroic, but a fighter.

Oh ... and you are so wise ???? Toasted McGrath.
I am fully aware of GODS awesome Grace and Miracles ... I personally witness them in my own life and in the lives of many others...
you don't have to believe it as you may serves the ultimate purpose of simple evil mentioned above.

Strive to be part of a civil toned society and we will all be better for it.
so political hate speech like Obama's in the following:
"Punish your enimies" when speaking to a Latino crowd. Or "They bring a knife. We bring a GUN!" Is that what you were refering to?
Steve--We on the left condemn such rhetoric no matter whose mouth(even if it's the President's) it comes out of. When is the right going to own up to their vitriolic rhetoric?
God is good. The effectual fervent prayer of the righteous availeth much, and Gabby has the world praying for her recovery.
Actually studies have shown intercessory prayer to be totally ineffectual. But I guess it gives people something to do while waiting for the Doctors to save people.
Yea! Pray in one hand and ... in the other. See which one fills up first.
Which is not to say I'm not happy for her. She is a strong person and has good doctors. No invisible fairies necessary.
Wow, that's an incredible recovery. Good luck! Miracles do happen.
A long road ahead for her I am sure, but good news.
However I seem to have missed reading or hearing from the left that it now appears this was a lunatic acting alone and not Sarah Palin's fault-
He was acting alone, but she clearly played a role in setting the state.
Are you kidding? Those weren't crosshairs OR surveyor marks! They were lower-case T's with circles around them for emphasis. T's for tolerance!
Please don't associate pitbulls and Palin. Putbulls are wonderful dogs.
The best things about pitbulls are their conservative views and understanding of the Constitution.
Don't forget all the hateful rhetoric on the rightwinger side too, while your at it. Or do you think it's alright if it comes from the right?
i agree.... alaskan1st.
Will this be continued at home with a daily reality show series?
Good old boy congress will never let this go away !They will continue to milk the shooting for their own political gain !!
Thank God that her health care medical insurance is the one that was written into law by the good old boy Washington politicians. As for the other shooting victims' medical expenses--- wipe all saving, sell the house, move in with the in-laws ??
WHICH GOD???
Comment # 12 deleted. Very grenade trollish remark insulting a the Tea Party.
TN420, you are suspended for a day for violating rule # 1 of the Code of Honor.
geeez, i would think her insurance is maxed out..come on a hole in the head, that's some serious stuff..i pray she recovers without any further problems..i find this recovery hard to believe without long term hospitalization or delicate care...
Congressional Health insurance never max's out. The good old boys saw to that !!
Must have been shot with a full metal jacketed shell, or else half of her head would have been blown off. She is very lucky. I only had to read the first post to see where Palin is already mentioned. You Palin haters really need to take a breath and calm down, jezzzz...
I THINK the scenario was a 9mm Glock, jacketed bullet, close range.
WTF does this have to do with Palin?!?!?!?!?!?1
Absolutely nothing. Some people are still trying to make this a political issue, despite logic and overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
I remain disgusted by those who are STILL trying to turn this into a political issue.
I am as well, but it would seem that the uneducated seem to latch on to whatever they think might be the cause without doing adequate research.
There was an assassination attempt on a politician. There's a reason it's a political issue.
Attempts to justify politicization of this mass murder/attempted assassination just add contempt to my disgust.
To be fair, Palin is far from the only person who contributed to the attack. She's just the only one with blood on her hands who's on national television day after day actually trying to portray herself as a victim.
You confirm my opinion, Toasty McGrath.
That tends to happen. I bring facts, you bring opinions.
That does not compute in the mind of a leftist .
I'm still waiting on Toasty to bring on the facts. Or a fact.
- Sarah Palin, former Governor of Alaska
- Sharron Angle, former member of the Nevada State Assembly
- Joyce Kaufman, Radio host, Tea Party activist
- Congressman Allen West
- Currently serving United States Congresswoman from Minnesota Michele Bachmann, leader of the Tea Party Caucus, paraphrasing Thomas Jefferson
- Currently serving Congresswoman from Arizona Gabrielle Giffords
Facts.
This is an example that God works miracles in this day and age.
No, it's an example that dedicated and professional citizens work miracles.
Great progress but NOT THRILLED about "obtained" email.
why do stupid people blame palin about this shooting. explain to me. what did she do that no other politican has done. obama has talked trash about republicans. he has sued arizona. now he acts like he cares. i dont get it.!! the shooter was a nut. always will be nuts on both sides of the parties. palin has a right to talk.!! the rest talk. msnbc talks. joy behar talks trash. no-one blames them. i feel for a innocent little girl that died. this senator should know to have top security there. especially she had gotten death threats.
I agree with TCfromMI - WTF does this have to do with Palin??? Paranoia and defensiveness is running at an all time high with that comment.
Obama has led the way in blame. They are just following the leader.
I have to say some of you are just ignorant. This was the action of an unstable person who was displeased with government and not political parties. To say Palin had anything to do with this just shows you probably need as much help as Loughner needed.
Anyone with a modicum of sense is in agreement with you, Jeff.
Amazing! This is a miracle!
Clearly?
oh because his action was triggerd by delusion and of course all people, right, center left and tea party are equally delusional......look in the mirror Toasty!
No, because only the far right has incorporated violence into their rhetoric.
I'm glad she is okay she seems to be a remarakable woman. The media should let us know how the rest of the injured are as each and everyone that was shot are remarakable in their own ways. To often we don't look at the common folk. Gabby I be praying for a full recovery for you as you sound like the type to pull thru.
i guess you missed the part about it not being political. Nothing of value to add, just insults, typical lib.
"Investigator say that the shooting suspect Jared Loughner is mentally unstable and was not apparently motivated by a partisan politics."
I'm starting to think that those who keep trying to push politics (left, right, blue, red, democrat or republican) into this tragedy are as obsessed and delusional as Loughner.
agreed.
Sittin' on the fence on this one.
Elvis-- I hope you're not wearing those tight pants while sittin' on the fence. Could be mighty uncomfortable.
Make that left frontal lobe, singular.
Even if she never gets back to 100% or returns to work there seems to be a good chance she can still have a good life. And she certainly is making amazing progress!
