I have an idea for a charity that will work, fund the proliferation of freedom and property rights. Not sure how this can be done, but with those two things any people can become a great nation. We are proof.

I am an auditor, and speaking from experience as far as administration occurs, the salaries become bloated to unbelievable levels (until they hit news sources) because the people that donate (great people!) don't take the time to read the audit reports. Get copies of their audited financials and check out the salaries column and see if it makes sense. There are good charities out there to donate to, they are just hard to find!

The best charity is your local charity, one in which you can verify their activities, salaries and expenses. These national and international charities have proven to be prime targets for scam artists, of which this is a great example.

Sorry Bono, but you can't save the world. What you can do is find a group of doctors and other medical professionals willing to serve and send them to areas that need their help. In other words, the only real solutions are our individual involvement as we simply cannot trust large sums of money to anyone. Not government, not charity - their are simply too many rotten people willing to steal and cheat.

i came across this type of scam with a burn foundation in California. It was a big story years back when the Fire men did a relay and raised a little over 1 mil in funds. Months later they learned that the people running it bought themselves new cars and was trying to claim them as transportation vehicles for burn survivors that needed to get back and forth to their doctor appointments. The sad thing is, they never did take people to their appointments, family members and friends did it for the burn survivors, and then they had it so that 97% of the funds went to the administration salaries and expenses, and less than 1% went to burn victims. It has since changed and all the people running it as been replaced with better people.

It didn't surprise me when I read the headlines that a fund backed by celebrities would have a problem with corruption. Most celebrities barely have enough intelligence to tie their own shoelaces, but they become overly impressed with their own self-importance once they become obscenely wealthy for doing next to nothing. However, I was surprised to find Bill Gates on the list of contributors. He has to have at least a bit of smarts to accomplish everything that he has done with his life. On the one hand, one would assume that he would be diligent about overseeing his contributions. On the other hand, $150 million is pocket change to him, so it probably isn't worth his time and effort to worry about where it goes.

The best charities to which to contribute are those close to home. By contributing to the local homeless shelter, home for batter women, or soup kitchen, one can actually see where one's money is being spent. As for curing diseases or fighting AIDS, leave that to your federal government because it is already spending a portion of your hard earned taxpayer dollars for those purposes.

Actually, you are wrong. GMO foods take FAR more chemicals to produce and they are leaving the soil 'unfarmable' or 'dead zones' due to contamination's.

You are mis-informed. Proper organic farming surpasses GMO farming by a rather large margin and at a savings to your health.

It is unfortunate, however, that so much money is stolen when it's intended to aleviate suffering. There should be severe penalties for those caught stealing donations, but when it's the governments themselves doing the stealing, don't hold your breath.

The money would be far better spent on something like micro-credits to engender self-sufficiency.

Salvation Army; if you want to give, that is the best run organization there is, I believe the top pay for the head is about 45 thousand per year, about 95% of all donations get to those that It was intended for; Haiti; at last report at least 50% of all aid given is missing !

Greg, the pharmaceutical companies have never cured a disease that doesn't kill a person quickly, like cancer and that one is just sometimes. There are no cures for any chronic diseases. They have tried to find cures, or so they say, for chronic diseases like AIDS, polycystic kidney disease, crohns disease, diabetes... the list goes on and there won't ever be a cure available even if someone found one, there is too much money in treating illness not curing it. They will just find drugs that supposedly work better maybe or maybe not with less side effects. Yes, they have made our lives easier with vaccinations and antibiotics but don't say they've cured diseases, they haven't.

None of us could possibly be surprised. I am however sad.

Let's start with Haiti. How it is that DR is doing a better job than Haiti? It has to be the government and the way things are set up in that country. I remember when the earthquake hit, the news media explained that there were so few jobs in that country that relatives, friends wired money each and every day so that Haitians could buy food. This system has been going on for years. Money has been thrown at that country with absolutely nothing to show for it. Bill Clinton has been at the helm and makes up all sorts of excuses for why things are so bad. Bill is too busy to watch where the money is going, just like Bono apparently isn't keeping a close eye. I have an uncle who has been in insurance sales for his entire adult life and who also, at one point, called people up to ask them for donations to charities for such things as cancer research. He told me that for every $20 or so dollars he collected from donators over the phone he himself pocketed about $10-12 of it for "self compensation" and that by the time other administrative costs (like paying people to fill out paperwork) were paid for it resulted in something like less than $5 out of every $20 donated actually going to the charity. I confronted him once about pocketing so much of the donation money for himself and his assistants and his reply was "What? Do you think that I and the others collecting the money should work for free?".... to which my reply was... "Ummm... yes, isn't that how CHARITIES usually are intended to work? As in you help out others with no expectation of anything in return?" He just looked at me with a smug look on his face.

Contrary to your worship of the process known as "Organic" farming, it was the direct cause of destruction of millions of acres of farm land over the last century. This is a fact of recorded history that has been inspected and analyzed till nothing is left to inspect.

This not to say that on small plots using today's knowledge, Organic farm methods do work with a lot of on hand management. But production is below optimum and often diseased. Often I find the product from Organic farming to be lacking in taste, size, nutrition and storability. Also I question sustainability.

I have worked with hundreds of "back to the Landers", organic operators almost all working with virgin soil over the last 66 years, I have yet to see one replace lost trace minerals, balance PH or give the dirt a rest. The dirt is no different than a brood cow, you must love her and care for her as your wife.

You cannot feed the U.S. without modern farming methods, no matter how you spin the word. GMO crops have never sterilized one square foot of ground anywhere in the world, if you believe it has and can prove it; there are hundreds of people in powerful positions that would just love to have that info.

That is not to say that gene splicing is without problems but it is the only kid on the block that could solve world hunger and until we can contain fraud over there, i'll keep my donations local.

how does a no kill shelter do any good? maybe the poor could eat the dogs we don't need. imagine how much meat we waste at our shelters.

Re organic gardening, I think it is great but the food at the markets are much more expensive. Building the soil organically and using beneficial insects works well but evidently it isn't something that can be done of a large scale. In making the earth "green", we've done away with ddt and now we have bedbugs. Pros and cons in both.

I think my post must have been misinterpreted by some. I am against the idea of organic farming not for it. It is a marketing ploy with the consequences of starving people. Don't take my word for it, Nobel prize winner Norman Borlaug did the math for me, alwaysconsult an expert, even posthumously, may he rest in peace. Just a reply to the anti-pharma people here. I often thank my lucky stars that I wasn't born at a time when we had hardly any weapons to fight disease. I can't imagine the heartbreak endless numbers of parents went through watching their children die from diseases that, today, have either been largely eradicated or that we at least have more effective treatments for, thanks to pharmaceutical research.

Nothing is perfect, and over the years of my life I have found that the truth almost always tends to be somewhere in the middle. But it is scary enough to be a parent without living with the dread of disease that most people in this country had to live with on a daily basis in the not too distant past.

Should the Global Fund do a better job of auditing it's grantees? Yes. That's what they're doing and that's why we're hearing about the corruption that they uncovered. But the Fund itself isn't part of the corruption. They face the same problem that any organization, including the U.N., faces when delivering aid internationally: trying to work with in an often unstable and corrupt government.

I couldn't agree more. Corruption in most of these poor countries is rampant. Just look at what was going on in Tunisia. It's the fox guarding the hen house. I give to nothing anymore. It's a shame.

Sandra, I agree about the corrupt charities within the U.S. The salaries and benefits for CEOs for some non-profit organizations are outrageous. I personally don't care to donate to a charity that pays it's CEO a seven figure salary. That's just ridiculous.

Regarding this story I'm not one bit surprised. With all the money donated to feed these countries these kids should at least be able to eat regular instead of continue to starve to death. The fact that anyone or group of people would steal money that was given to provide medical supplies and feed starving children is plain evil.

For those of you who think that you are not giving to the NGOs think again. Huge chunks of your tax dollar are going to them both directly through grants or indirectly when they bill Medicare, Medicaid and any other government sponsored programs.

As I mentioned in my reply to your previous post, try doing a literature search in respected scientific and medical journals before showing the world your ignorance. Heck, a Google or Wikipedia search will solve this one for you. It is a FACT that 30% of males past the age of puberty who develop mumps are at risk of developing orchitis. Sterility can occur if both testicles are affected. It can happen with women and their ovaries as well, but is much more rare. Mumps is still a significant threat to health in third world countries. Rest assured that anyone who has suffered debilitating side effects from diseases such as polio, mumps, small pox, measles, etc., would jump at the chance to be vaccinated against these diseases if given the choice before becoming ill.

Unfortunately the degree of corruption has led me to say NO to any charities or collections for any cause. I know well that 3/4 of the money goes to the top schmucks. Very little actually makes it to the cause.

Go I (yesterday actually) spent 2 hours doing a food-to-serve for homeless familys at a church. I also along with my family spends at least 3-4 days at our local SPCA fixing things (Last time painted).

Meaning we should as a community assist somewhere even 1 day a year is something.

It doesn't matter if you decline to donate directly to a charity - very little of the money for the Global Fund comes directly from individuals like us.

Your government is donating for you - the US government pledged $4 billion in Oct 2010. Corporations like Chevron pledged - you donate with each fill up. Foundations like the Gates Fund pledged - indirectly, your purchases of Microsoft products support the donation. The United Methodist Church pledged - you donate with each tithe. And for all these (involuntary) donations to the corrupt Global Fund, only the contribution at church is deductible from your federal taxes.

Hooray for the Swedes - ALL pledgers should withold the funds until this mess is straightened out. Effective birth control would probably prevent more cases of AIDS, TB, and malaria than the Global Fund ever will.

I'm not sure anyone really knows where charitable funds go. Large accounts are ripe for picking and fraudulent accounting. Unless you have direct contact with the charity, save your money. Paying for food seems "charitable" enough these days.

Your attitude is the doppelganger of these celebrities: they were too ignorant or lazy or foolish to investigate the cause to which they lent their names. People with the attitude you describe are too (pick your own poison for the reason) to bother to find out which charitable organizations are well run and just paint them all with the same brush so they can feel justified in ignoring the suffering that many of of these charities are trying to ameliorate.

Working in a pharmacy I have seen so many of our own girls and women that cannot afford birth control here in our own country. I think that is a crime in itself that needs to be corrected.

Have them try Planned Parenthood. They've been providing bc pills to the poor for years- and other contraceptives also. I used to get my condoms there for 10 cents each - just a token payment that also helped them along in a minor way

The big danger there is religious whackos who think that their omnipotent god actually needs THEIR help toaccomplish a goal or punish someone's wrongdoing. They're either nuts or they don't understand the concept of omnipotence (just the fundamentals, please!).

I'm surprised that this hadn't come to light sooner. It shows that regular independent fraud audits were not being performed. If I were any of these folks who were giving such large sums of money, I'd demand full disclosures and regular independent audits to expose any weaknesses and fraud. How could they not know their drugs were being sold on the black market. Doesn't anyone keep track of deliveries to the donated clinics?

Yikes! I'll think twice before donating in the future to any cause. We don't have enough watch dogs.

I agree but the current political thought is that anyone in America that needs help is a lazy, ne'er do well person - probably an alcoholic or drug addict. At least that is the Republican/Tea Party agenda.

i dont know if they are lazy or an alcoholic but i do know they aren't entitled to my money. If I choose to help them great or if someone else chooses to help them great. But for the government to take money from some to give to others is just wrong.

you can try to give like that. but then local crooked governments step in and tell you you cant do that. like that couple last week in the news that was told to stop giving away food.

do you really want someone running a free kitchen in your neighborhood? im sorry vagrants cause problems. it may not be pc to say it but the people who eat other peoples food tend to be less respectful to other peoples property. I once witnessed someone giving out fruit in a very poor area. within an our there was orange peels and half eaten fruit left everywhere. and guess who was out cleaning it up. The nice lady who donated the fruit.

they steal bags of rice if that is what you give. Money is obviously more desirable but the only way to give people something is if you can insure that the people who get it are somewhat secure. it is a nearly impossible task in third world countries.

All of this keeps reminding me of a South Park episode, the one where they meet Starvin' Marvin and when they go to his country, they find that all of the food is in a building where a huge Jabba the Hut like Sally Struthers is eating all of the donated food supplies. SOooo funny!!!

Amen, Mister Clark! I've had Brit and Canadian friends ANGRY over this, asking what the hell is wrong with us. For some reason (propaganda) people think that something for the people, by the people is wrong. Well, corporate greed, followed by politician's greed, mixed with third world greed, filled in with a little more greed and corruption and greed, makes continued greed! Lobbyists need to be shut out, period! End of story, or we don't have a friggin chance! Period !

Thats why people from other countries come to the USA to get medical treatment when they have cancer or other deadly diseases.

Also what other country does face transplants? None. The US has the best medical care on this planet, if you want the sub par treatment then move to a free health care country. And pay 60% taxes.

Read my earlier comment. I have family member who from time to time calls people up to collect charity donations. He pockets basically half the donations for himself. It's not just the people at the top (although they are corrupt as hell)... there are also people at the bottom, 1st point of contact who "try to get theirs" as well.
