Never leave you glass unattended. Years ago my mom was visiting and we had some wine. My husband and I didn't know she'd left her's on the table unfinished and in the morning our one year old finished it. We couldn't understand why his face and ears were so red and his behavior was odd. It took a couple of hours to realize what had happened. We were lucky he wasn't seriously injured. If this was an accident, I feel sorry for all concerned. Btw, the article doesn't say that they intentionally gave the child alcohol. She may have drunk from an unattended glass. Don't judge so quickly.

Exactly, and thank you. This could happen to anyone who allows alcohol into their home. A thirsty child can take a very large swallow and that could be enough to kill her; also if the drink was sweetened in some way she might willingly consume it.

Let's not persecute them until the whole story comes out. Kids will drink anything. It may well be that they (the adults) left booze unattended and she drank it.

A similar thing happened to my family. I'd just gotten home from 3 months at sea. My wife and I were celebrating my return with some Scotch on the rocks and catching up on what transpired while I was gone.

I noticed that my wife's glass was nearly empty and chided her about her consumption since my own glass was still pretty full. She looked at her glass and then at me in surprise, replying that she'd barely had a couple of sips.

About that time our 4 year old daughter walked over to the coffee table and picked up the glass. From the outcome of this story, we were probably lucky we caught her before she was "over the hill". She was obviously drunk and we kept her active and awake until the symptoms went away.

It happened right under our noses, so to speak. We were just so engrossed in our conversation we failed to notice her helping herself to mom's drink.

So, it's safe to say that pappadave, oomyaqub and b-875713 have all made mistakes that may have endangered their children with liver failure, kidney failure, brain damage, etc-- unintended mistakes with (luckily) no bad consequences. Can you tell me then why a gal in California is currently facing a $500,000 bail because her kids ate one of her pot cookies? A drug that cannot and will not cause permanent harm?

Where did I say I personally had ever done this? I said MOST people do, since most people do keep alcohol around and don't bother to lock it up. As for that "gal in California" it's just ridiculous that she was given that kind of bail. Why take something that is already wrong and apply it to even more people?

It's a four year old. Most likely they left something out and the kid drank it. Some of those malt liquor based "alchopops" would fit the bill perfectly. It wouldn't take much to kill a four year old kid.

We don't even know yet if there was a "crime" at all. The police have been known to jump the gun before, only to have all charges dismissed. If there is, it will probably be some form of negligence.

If a child should come across some alchohol that was left within reach by some act of negligence, and consumed any amount, they would more likely than not regurgitate before consuming enough to end their life.

That's absurd. I know this because half of my family is Jewish, and I've seen some tradition-minded Jews give their kids small amounts of wine on holidays. My husband tells me Italians have a similar tradition. The kids don't throw up. You got it right, Oom. Alcohol begins entry into the bloodstream upon contact with soft tissues-- the lining of your mouth, esophagus, and stomach. By the time you are throwing up you already have alcohol poisoning and it will only expel what is in your stomach waiting to be processed, but has no effect (obviously) on the alcohol already in your blood. That's why people with severe alcohol poisoning often die after vomiting.

By the age of four either of my sons would have been perfectly capable of opening the screw off top of a bottle of liquor or wine, at least if it had already been opened. Duh, that's why prescription drugs come with "child proof tops". Alcoholic beverages do not. Perhaps they should. When my kids were young and there was sometimes alcohol in the house, it never even occurred to me to lock it away. I doubt it occurs to most of us. In other words, there but for the grace of God go most people.

I don't necessarily want to be in charge, but a year or two of mandatory classes in parenting as part of a high school curriculum sounds like a pretty good idea.

Who makes up the 'test'? Who administers it? Who has the authority to tell those people how to run the test or what to put on the test, the government?

What is on the parent test, questions like:

And if they pass the test and still fail at parenthood, do we jail the tester? Do we jail the committee that came up with the failed curriculum? Do we jail you for coming up with this 'solution'?

Actually, an alcohol bath, under the supervision of a doctor, is used in some treatments. Alcohol on the skin tends to evaporate quickly, and lower the body's temp.. So some one was treated that way due to an illness, and thought it would solve all temp. problems. Limited knowledge is a dangerous thing: ignorance can be fatal.

I don´t think they intended to rub the girl with alcohol. They most probably gave it to her to drink. I´ve seen a haitian father give Barbancourt rum ( which is strong as hell) to a 2 yrs old boy. It´s a cultural problem.
