The Mexicans despise us. They send their most impoverished people and criminals here to the US. The illegals work on farms in California and have contaminated the crops with their excrement for 50 years knowing that you will be eating it. The farmers have made their fortunes off of the cheap Mexican labor and, in the end, betrayed America. Hope the next generation can straighten out the mess or we will be ruled by LaRaza.
Well, can ya blame 'em, Michael? But, that said, I'm just glad I'm one of the folks to whom cilantro tastes absolutely awful/poisonous (raw celery has a similar effect on us...apparently it's a genetic thing). So, I won't need to worry about any of this stuff getting into my system.
mescans deficating in the fields again. farm to cheap to provide a port a potty. the fda sure is doin a fine job protecting americans. just think about how often this is happening now. profit trumphs health and safety now.
doc - you are correct but since produce is not screened for E-coli (thanks in part to the "organic food" movement) we cannot prevent these kinds of outbreaks until someone gets sick. We have a huge problem with contaminated foods in the US. The sampling programs we have in place tests less than 10% of the produce that is grown here or enters this country. Fortunately US citizens are generally very healthy and the GI distress symptoms they experience most often go unreported.
Actually Michael, we don't have a huge problem. Estimates (and these are rough) from the CDC is that ~13% get sick, ~0.03% are hospitalized and ~0.00085% actually die from food related illnesses. Those are some pretty small numbers. And it is virtually impossible to determine if the illnesses were cause by the food company or the food handler which can also mean home preparation.
And produce IS screened for E. coli. Unfortunately, there is no way to test 100% of the product. And even if there were, nothing is 100% effective nor 100% risk free. And it has nothing to do with the Organic Industry.
Long story short, there will ALWAYS be recalls due to microbial contamination unless food is completely sterilized before consumption and that is not practical nor is it smart. Our bodies need microbes to be able to build resistance. And some of them are actually good for us.
The root cause is the industrialized food production we have in this country. All of the problems have come from large growers shipping to large processing facilities. The small producers don't have these problems.
Of course not. Local recalls won't make national news unless multiple people die because of it. If you want to see just how many recalls happen on a daily basis, I would recommend signing up for the FDA, USDA and CDC email alerts. You would be surprised how many recalls occur.

Yup, wouldn't doubt it,driven by the fields of that company a number of times in years pas..Mostly Mexican field hands doing the work...
And what about the cilantro that's sold, unpackaged, in the produce department?
Hate to break it to ya folks, but this isn't about mexicans pooping on the veggies... Salmonela isn't a "normal" bacteria in the intestines.....

Small producers can still have recalls. The only difference is the size and scope of the recall.
Yes they CAn have recalls, I just haven't seen any on the news

Buy how exactly do vegetables get contaminated with Salmonella and E-coli? Seems strange to me...
Those organisms are everywhere. And since vegetables do not go through a kill step (pasteurization) it is then much more difficult to control them.
And as I said above, nothing is 100% safe. It just isn't possible.
