Insurance companies would be money ahead if they paid for psychotherapy which would cut down on the expensive anti-psychotics. A months supply of psycho drugs can cost about a grand a month and they often do little more than sedating the patient. Guess the problem is that the pharma plans are separate from the med insurance. I have an adult child that has tried every drug there is and is worse off now than when he started and weight gone from 175 to 235 in 3 years. He get psychotic when he stops taking the drugs but never get a chance to totally let his system stabilize.
Only weight gain and diabetes are mentioned. What about the other parts of Metabolic syndrome which the atipical - antipsychotics (including Zyprexa,Abilify, Seroquel, and Geodone) can cause. These can be blood clotting disorders, Gout, Hi triglycerides, and elevated levels of bad cholesterol. These do not work much better in the younger population either, because of the same side effects. I am a retired psychiatric and behavioral health nurse. The side effects of these medications can destroy all good physical health in the person being treated for mental health problems.
