Don't let the oppressive, conservative "Moral Majority" minority dictate which women may receive medical care.
Girls seeking sexual health or reproductive medical services are considered "of age" to consent to treatment without an adult's approval. Therefore, they should also be able to access Plan B-type medicines the same as a 50-yo woman.
What a crock of nonsense, claiming that this will lead to promiscuity, blah blah blah. If the girls are seeking Plan B, they're already having sex. Let them be responsible for the consequences (or how to prevent certain consequences) too.
While I agree with you, it seems in this day and age there is no responsibility taken and in the case with Plan B, young girls need to know this is not a repetitive solution and need to seek actual Birth Control. I think it can be abused if girls don't understand it. And with the current statistics on teenage pregnancy, age of kids having sex, and so on - I don't think girls (or boys) are understanding much and parents and schools are either not educating, or doing very little to educate.
I'm all for BC being open to all. If we can get enough people behind it it would rock.
It always kinda sickened me that the very people who were against abortion were also against many of the means of preventing it. It's like they WANT to screw people over, not something Jesus would do.
Yeah K, don't Catholics (and I am actually inquiring from what I've heard, not trying to blame, accuse, or make fun of) say you aren't allowed to be on birth control because they believe it's like abortion or something? Although birth control PREVENTS anything from happening in the first place, they say it's also like preventing a life from ever happening? But then wouldn't they be against menstruation and masturbation because those do the exact same thing? (Waste of cells, not being used.) It's 2011, I don't think you're going to get the choice of abstinence out of people anymore.
I'm all for prevention! Just don't come crying to me when you refused to use it and need a solution! That I'm not all that supportive of under most circumstances.
You think teens are uneducated and will use this pill as a form of BC? Teens today are very sexually aware today. They are being taught facts and truths like no other generation before them. If they have a question and they don't want to talk to an adult or parent, the internet is a safe resource without reprecussions. I think you should give teens more credit.
I think the morning after pill is a good pill. I have nothing against it.
It's hard to give teens credit when I see so many of them pregnant. I don't have very much faith in them because I've heard children as young as 12 talking about sex, and I don't think they are very smart about it. I am 26. In 2003 I graduated highschool with 9 moms. Did you hear about the school in Tennesee where, what, 90 students were pregnant or something? Sure, I'm sure they look stuff up online, but I think a lot of them get that "It won't happen to me" mentality and I DO think some girls may use it more often than they should if it's that available to them - there just needs to be proper education about it.
Some things you may want to consider. First.....there are way more teens that are NOT preganant than are. Just because the right winged conservative media hypes a story, it isn't cause for panic....it is cause for true and reliable research because not all teens are getting pregnant. As for Tennesse ( and I will tread cautiously here)....remember - most southern states ( not all) are conservative bible belt folks who still teach outdated and irresponsible abstinance programs for sex ed. The states that dicate via religion are the ones with high teen preganacy rates. Instead of empowering our youth with proper education and understanding of their own bodies and choices....they teach fear and shame. They teach that sex has a bearing on a womans character and that men are pathetic uncontrollable animals. It is so wrong. Sex is fine. Sex is natural and okay regardless of marital status. Sex isn't a weapon or tool.
As for this pill and all other BC methods.....give theese teens some credit. If BC didn't work....ALL teens would be preganant at some point and that just NOT the case.
Maybe I can clarify this - many birth control options - including Plan B and the IUD's - prevent the egg from implanting, but an egg implants after conception occurs. So as far as the Catholics and many other religious groups are concerned, conception has happened. That's why they have such a fit about things like this.
On a medical standpoint, I agree that education is needed, because repeated, chronic use of these hormones could have long term effects on a woman. So I hope there is some education in school regarding these.
Still not enough. Unwelcome pregnancies will lead to abortions. That's how it is. Rome is going to need to back down on this one if they are serious about decreasing the Abortion rate in this country. There is a trade off here - there is no having the cake and eating it to.

PGH,
What is your aversion to this pill?
