With diabetes being such an enormous issue, both from a public health standpoint and from a fiscal perspective, I wonder how this ties into arguments for or against universal health insurance. Clearly, this study points out the massive benefit to diabetics who are covered. Early diagnosis and strong treatment of diabetes can prevent most or all of the major complications for a lot of sufferers. Maybe the costs of NOT insuring these folks (by way of complications, surgeries, etc.) should be factored into the political discourse on the still rather controversial issue of a national healthcare system.
