Researchers are making it sound like smoking causes diabetes. I don't think so, I believe its diet and obesity. Of these smokers and those exposed to second hand smoke, how many had a poor diet and are obese? The article did not identify the people participating in the research.
I woulda thought inheritance and obesity are causes. Second hand smoke = emphysema. Steel mills and 3 electric coal buring plants = asthma in 50% of our school children.

Our automobile and pick up trucks are tested every two years. This program is privatized but paid for by state and federal. I do know that one American diesel engine manufacturer is spending 2 million dollars each day to improve its clean air - and it already is better than anyone else.
I have wondered if clusters of certain ailments are directly related to vehicle emissions or a particular water source or trace elements or buried bad stuff from long ago, unmarked and forgotten.
