There has been no prevention of prayer in schools, just prevention of forced prayer in schools.
Here's a thought: if religion were allowed in schools, which one would it be? Yours? Mine? Fundamentalist hateful Christianity? One would certainly be against that, wouldn't one? The Westboro Baptist Church teaching your kids and mine their own divisive message of hatred and insanity?
Think about it. We all belong to different religions. How could we decide which prayers were appropriate? There is no single prayer that would be right for every person, is there? The Lord's Prayer is inappropriate for those of the Hebrew faith. Christians are loath to pray Hebrew prayers. Atheists and Agnostics have the right not to have to hear prayers of be forced to tolerate them. What's the point of praying aloud, anyway? The Lord hears every prayer, does He not?
One realises this is an extreme case, but it could happen. What then? The Founding Fathers were wise when they realised that separation of church and state meant we wouldn't have these problems from the beginning. Religious freedom means we can educate our children properly at school and bring them up in our religion of choice at home.
What if your child's teacher belonged to a religious cult and practiced strange and odd religious practices? If this teacher proselytized at school, what then? All the folks projecting their religious beliefs onto the wonderful idea that religion could be taught in schools aren't thinking the idea through. This is a massive ugly giant can of the most massive and most hideous worms anyone could possibly imagine.
Would you then long for the days when public organised prayer was forbidden in public schools? One might think the answer to that question would be yes.
No one can legislate against prayer. One can pray in school whenever one feels the need.
Anger control is such a silly issue. People get angry, have fits and terrify everyone around them because they enjoy it and it helps them get what they want. It's not really an "issue". Watching people do anger is rather entertaining. It also tells you who they are and shows you how much control they want. Walk away.
Saying a little prayer to control anger would be like being on a thrilling roller coaster ride and saying a little prayer that you don't get thrilled. Angry people enjoy their anger and they enjoy what it does to others.
If you do not believe in a higher being the whom are you praying to? I believe this is like the old saying, "As long as there are tests in school, there will be prayers in school."
What matters is becoming mentally disengaged from the thoughts that are making you mad. For thousands of years, meditation has worked to alleviate or relieve anger. No prayer is required to get the benefits discussed.
In response to those who think schools should inculcate students in their religious beliefs, religious indoctrination in schools cannot be justified under the First Amendment for stress relief or otherwise.
Avoidance doesn't solve the anger issues. They only defer them until later. The issues remain to be dealt with. In other words, whatever made you angry is still there when you come down from the high if you didn't deal with it.
If you can't smoke a joint at the time, try God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. Both seem to work.
To say that people who pray are less prone to anger makes a lot of sense.
These same people are already brainwashed to turn the other cheek, just like they are told to to serve the religious leaders who profit by it. But hey ! What do you expect from people who read only one book in their short and dreary life.?
I have seen more people express anger in defense of their religious beliefs on newsvine than in relation to any other topic.
My prayer: that people will finally give up on ridiculous beliefs which are only centered on the best interests of those who capitulate to their cause so that we can finally better the world.
People are so misguided!!! Study our founding fathers. Bring back prayer in school and if you use sep chu & st you are more silly for the words dont exist until atheist judges who took more power in 1960's. 160 yrs later. No remarks please for if you say what you think it is just that!! Study the founders!!!!
Remember Madeline Murray O'Hare, the Atheist who fought until she had prayer taken out of our schools? From that moment up until now look at all the evil things that have been happening to these poor school children. Students shooting up our schools and killing other students, teachers etc. If that evil women would have kept her trap shut, our schools would be in much better condition students and all. Because PRAYER DOES CHANGE THINGS I DON'T CARE WHAT NO ONE SAYS. God is giving us a chance to reside with him in Heaven, and people would rather go to Hell instead. It's a darn shame. I feel sorry for the people who choose to not give God a chance and feel there is no heaven awaiting them when they die. Boy do they have a rude awakening. Instead of knocking prayer and doubting God, get down on your knees and give it a try, it makes a big difference in ones life. Especially when a person feels down and out. TRY IT AND STOP BEING SUCH AGNOSTICS.
Madalyn Murray O'Hare was right. Let me ask you this: do you think that Jews and Hindus enjoyed being forced to pray Christian prayers in schools? Do you think they felt easy sitting there listening while Christians prayed prayers they couldn't join? If you're truly a Christian and have love for everyone, their feelings should matter to you. Your shouting doesn't come across as very Christian or very loving of all mankind.
You come across as self-righteous and intolerant of others in your post. Is this how you really feel? 'Damn the Hindus and the Muslims and the Jews, only Christians matter,' does this really describe you? I hope not. Jesus told us to 'Love one another, love thy enemies as thyself.' Do you practice that in your life?
Clearly you feel very strongly about this. Reread what you wrote and ask yourself if it would attract many to God. Ask yourself if you love Madalyn Murray O'Hare. A real Christian would love her as an enemy. Perhaps you should also ask yourself if your minister/preacher/religious leader is teaching the Word of God as love or a message of division and hatred?
Madalyn Murray O'Hare died in fear and terror. She was kidnapped and held until she signed over her fortune to her kidnapper, then she was suffocated? choked? poisoned? we don't know how, but she was brutally murdered and buried in a barrel in a shallow grave. How do we know that she didn't find the Lord in her final terrifying moments? Stranger things have happened.
Prayer changes everything in all situations. It is also good to attend church and to pray. I always feel better when I pray. I pray for my family and friends, our country, those serving our country, family and friends with specific needs. Without the belief of my Lord and prayers I don't know how I would deal with issues that arise every day! God bless everyone who cares to read these words.
6Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Paul confirmed the calming effects of prayer approximately 2000 years ago. I, for one, am glad the secular science world has made such a claim concerning prayer. It simply gives more credibility to what Christians have always believed anyway.

I am a firm believer that prayer can control anger. When I am confronted with hostility, I ask God to guide my tongue and speak for me. Usually I find that I don't have to say a word and if I do, it is not out of anger or fear. The battle is not ours, it is God's. It took me about 40 years to practice and learn this.
It helps just keep it out of our schools?!
Hows that for backwards thinking!? it helps.. but keep it out.. ha!
Well, this is non-religion specific prayer. Any type of prayer helps not just Christian.

Yes, this is the same as the old saying/technique: "Take a deep breath and count to ten".
Oh, I see I'm late with that (see #6).
the hell with prayer...smoke a joint instead.
Avoidance doesn't solve the anger issues. They only defer them until later. The issues remain to be dealt with. In other words, whatever made you angry is still there when you come down from the high if you didn't deal with it.
Just count to 10. Amen

very good post... though I'm not religious but you were being diplomatic....very nicely done.
You forgot the rest of the Serenity Prayer:
God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change
Courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference,
Thy Will, not mine, be done. Amen.
There's more, but this is from the AA Big Book.

Well said Loki!
Never has it been better said than by Christ.
Pray to Jesus Christ. Only. Not no hindu or budda pagan god!!! John 3:16
Self-righteousness attracts no one to Jesus, Todd. Turn it down.
turn what down?

I'm sorry, but this response is barely legible.

What if it's prayer that makes you angry in the first place? hehe

I can testify personally to how prayer can balance out your uneven temperment. And others around you will be able see it as well.
