THis is a colossal waste of money! I know because I have been working as a lunch supervisor for a few years now in a local high school, and have subbed in that position in the middle school, too. What I have observed is that you can require that a child put at least a one fruit and one carton of milk on their lunch tray BUT you cannot make them eat it. It sickens me to see how much food goes into the trash each day, including unopened milk and uneaten fruit. I am sure that our school is not unique. I also think that it is deplorable that some of the parents bring McDonald's to the school because their kids call and tell them that they don't like the school lunch.
I agree. I also work at a high school and while by law they have to take it, we can't make them eat it. It is truly a waste and makes me sick to see all thefood thrown away. And the quality is fine, if the quality is so I wouldn't eat it, I won't put it out. You can't change kids who have terrible eating habits at home. It needs to start when they are VERY young.
Though other commenters have mentioned how kids tend to throw away fruits and vegetables, this sort of increase in funding can be useful PART of a larger initiative. Classroom education needs to incorporate more training on nutrition fundamentals framed in a way that makes sense and appeals to school kids. You have to present it in a way that provides near-term (and long-term) benefits for good nutrition and detriments for poor nutrition. As with adults, we operate primarily on short-term feedback, especially when it comes to food intake. I think the effect is magnified in younger people, though, so these issues need to be addressed in ways with which they can associate. Each little bit counts, and increased funding is always a good sign.

That was my first though too. When I was in school, I would have gone hungry before so much as touching a bland vegetable.

If the fruit isn't good quality and ripe I won't eat it, either. It's awful to eat unripe fruit. It's disgusting.
Instead of piling more tasteless, undesirable vegetables onto the trays, why not invest in ways to make it taste better.
You know they will not push natural raw, NON-GMO or non-chemically grown foods.
So in other words.............They will push more GARBAGE. You may as well get it out of one.
