In excess of 400,000 people die every year (1993) from smoking-related diseases --
more than from alcohol, crack, heroin, murder, suicide, car accidents, and AIDS combined.

That's great! We need a little population control here in the USA. As an added attraction, it gets rid of people a good decade before the extremely expensive terminal decline that old people experience before they die!
I'm not a smoker, but I don't think it's any of anybody's business what a person does to themselves. And that old argument about society paying the cost is irrelevant if we get rid of socialism like we should.
I would rather die twenty years early having LIVED me life a free man than to have existed under present United Socialist States of America tyranny in a semi sterile environment.
Soon, it will be a moot point. When the economy collapses, we will ALL be too poor even for immediate and emergent health care.
They study you are referring to was a complete SHAM - The figures were actually MADE UP - and has been criticized by many legitimate statisticians.
It was soo-o-o bad, they ended up having to reduce their figures on obesity deaths by 1/3
They based all figures JUST on total deaths - with a formula, made up by the anti-smoking organizations, - and then just decided to throw in an extra 3,000 deaths from SHS - with NO PROOF! and no statistical evidence of SHS harm!
I have studied this study EXTENSIVELY, and have NEVER seen a lousier use of statistics - If you will take time to actually READ it, they actually ADMIT that there are problems, with almost EVERY part of it!!
You would think that if 500,000 people are dying of smoking each year, we would run out of smokers. All the law suits in the world made no difference in smoking, I was a scheem conjured by attornies to make money for themselves, nothing more. Smokers have to recourse of suing again because its has been know since the 1950s that smoking is bad for your health and there is no denying it. I feel states should use anti-smoking money won by the lawsuit for education in schools. Schools across this nation can use this money, and they can apply one hour to anti-smoking campaign which will do better than the state's anit-smoking campaign is doing now.
This article states that the death rate amoung women was higher than expected while another MSNBC article states the death rate for women was declining. Which is it?
And how many people die each year from obesity? Alcohol? Drugs? Get off of it, I'm not a smoker and I'm sick of listening to people whine, b*tch and moan about it. Oh yeah, your big pretty SUV? Chugs out more lethal crap than having a smoke will. The McD's that you shovel into your mouth on a daily basis? That's killing you, better outlaw it. Ban everything. Fat, salt, alcohol, tobacco, sugar....... Plus I love seeing a 400 lb woman give a smoker a dirty look, as she's riding along on a scooter because she is too fat to walk. Hypocrite.
Stop with the bull@!$%#! Answer this: Why are the nursing homes full of ex-smokers now in their late 70's and 80's? Liz Taylor was a smoker how the hell did she live to be 80 years old? The story goes on and on......The F'N goverment is filling people full of bull@!$%# information about smoking and second hand smoking! Stop you damn whining and get on with life!
The WHO continues to LIE to perpetuate their belief that Smoking can be eliminated
In their OWN study, they found no link to Lung cancer from 30 to 40 years of living with a smoker - They also found that Children growing up in a smoking home have a 22% LESS chance of having Lung cancer in their lives.
Theirs was the first study to find those things - but NOT THE ONLY ONE!
Helpful to put this number in context:

I guess that tell you how much faith to put into crap you read on the net Darth.
If they all stopped smoking, drinking, doing drugs, or overeating; how would we pay the extra Social Security?
