Yes, China's food safety laws are not that strong, but it is getting better. I live in the central part of China, ex pat, and I have no choice, and I feel the food here is safe. I buy direct from farmers.

About the mushrooms, there are many varieties, from white to dark. I fail to understand why someone would bleach mushrooms.

In the USA, our beef, chicken, pork, etc is loaded with hormones. Vegetables are loaded with pesticides. Apples are one of the worst, yet we feed our children gallons of apple juice.

PS food scandals happen in the USA, food is recalled for having high bacteria counts to too much chemicals. China is getting better, but no country is perfect when it comes to food.

Joe, while I agree with you on some points. BUT there has been reports of tainted foods being sold right here in the good ole USA, grown and raised here also.

Salmonella is present in a lot of American foods. OH remember the bastard that was selling tainted eggs just a month or so ago. He was not Chinese. How about the Tomato scare not long ago? Seed sprouts that people put in salad ring a bell?

Yes I try to buy "Made in US" products, no doubt about that. But with the American companies shipping their goods to China and others, you don't have too much of a choice anymore.

I think that the media needs to keep replaying Schumer's speech about dumping all the problems on said Tea Party. He did not know, when he said it, that he was still being recorded. I noticed this line was being used by many in the fight over the budget.

Yes indeed, when we look at the track record of our FDA they have failed time and again to protect the people, and the food supply. This is their job. Cut them and let the states handle these issues as is their Constitutional right.

I suspect the FDA to be on the take. Why would they allow our cows to be injected with so much that many people consider to be dangerous? Today I read that milk cows in America are being injected with "human genes."

Years and years of "tainted greens." The FDA studies this for a year or so to find the cause and then place the blame on a small herd of cows miles from the tainted farm. Poor little cows.

The FDA failed to note that the pickers, mostly in America illegally, are paid by the basket full. They failed to point out that the "johnnie-on-the-spot," the portable bathrooms were located five miles from the field. What would a "picker" decide to do, loose all that money or use the field? My personal experience with them was forty years ago. Following two days of meetings with several of their higher-ups over getting their permission to sell a very safe agricultural product, ( all natural, all organic ), I was invited by two of them into another private room. It was made obvious to me, at that moment, that this issue could be resolved with a briefcase of used twenties.

China? We had best look at our home first. Please count the number of times just plain old simple lettuce and spinach has had to be recalled in the last five years alone. Please tell me why human cells are being injected into milk cows for the consumption of the children of our country. That seems very weird to me and I do not believe that the tea party, who ever they may be, has a hand on the teat of this.

I would argue that the FDA is understaffed, not that it should be disbanded, also, leaving it up to individual states would be a disaster, as poorer states and those more susceptible to lobbying dollars will be overrun by products with virtually no regulation at all.

As awful as it sounds, it is often times cheaper to face the risk of lawsuits over a product than it is to just develop a safer (but less profitable) one.

The baby-wipes are a fantastic example of cut corners to save a buck. Less regulation, or state-run regulation is NOT going to solve that.

If states controlled regulation, you would see states like Delaware become the bastion of ALL production, because I'm sure they would not impose ANY regulation.

Now, with everything produced in Delaware, these products are just going to be shipped out EVERYWHERE!

Instead of having one cohesive health/safety standard, you'll have something similar to state-pollution regulations where CA and NY will have their own super-high standards while Idaho and Montana would have almost none...it wil be more expensive because these companies will not be able to sell in certain states unless they either adhere to the ridiculous standards of NY and CA or make 2 separate versions...which causes waste...your choice.

We need to clear the lobbyists out of DC, this is getting out of hand! the USDA and FDA are definitely on the take, and all too often, agri-business has a firm grip on safety policy! Look at how they constantly fight with the FDA on trying to loosen the "certified organic" label requirement so that they can literally false advertise! They already won being able to not have GMO categorized as artificial!

milk is a big deal in china. and to cause panic isn't a good thing. they will also need to save face. the best way to save face is to have 2 things happen. the government needs to find a person or group guilty and execute them. and they also can isolate the problem if someone commits suicide. this should calm the masses into buying china made milk products. if you have money in china, and many people do, they will buy imported milk products. i do like how china sends a bill to the family. it's a good idea....

I've heard horror stories from a few expats that its critically important to keep your head down and not to draw attention, positive or negative from authority figures, lest you be railroaded by someone looking to make a name for themselves.
