But the republicans told us we don't need the EPA. We need to trust the corporations, their profit motive, and Chinese manufacturers to protect our children from toxic chemicals.
For such an educated country- we can be such idiots. Why would we knowingly expose our future generation to hazardous chemicals? Testing of these chemical should be a MUST. Corporations can not take the easy way out.
I don't want my children exposed to anymore "ooopsy- toxic chemicals" My 10 year old has been exposed to high levels of LEAD in Thomas Trains, bottles and sippy cups with BPA for YEARS, cadium and lead in faux jewelry, now we have MSG in EVERY food product...
The FDA needs to be on top of things more, I'm losing faith in their ability to provide oversight on what is under their jurisdiction, and now even more-so when they're saying that its safe to release chemicals that haven't been tested..
Back in college, for one of my "career prep" engineering assignments I was asked to write a paper with this premise: I was a research scientist trying to justify whether or not a new, potentially toxic product should be brought to market. Preliminary lab tests had shown worrying signs that the product could be toxic, but the project deadline was close and costs were skyrocketing while the new product wasn't being sold.
I got points knocked off because my final position was "we shouldn't release this until we've done more research, we could poison people." My grader told me my position was unrealistic, and I was supposed to answer "let's release it, if we mess up odds are no one will figure it out, and if they do our lawyers will settle it. In the meantime, we need the profit and research is expensive."
The message was, I suppose, that engineers are supposed to shut up and prop up the bottom line, not advocate for what might be best for people and the environment. Regulations are burdens, not the sign of a responsible society.
But really, what I learned is that I should never trust a company trying to profit off me.
Wait. The law says you can't do testing on children and pregnant women. So how are you supposed to test these things to make sure they are safe for kids and pregnant women?
Animal testing and tissue sampling will probably be the major first run tests followed by volunteers. Some of it you think would be treated as common sense - hey this new plastic gives off high levels of synthetic estrogen when exposed to tempratures over 90 degrees. High levels of estrogen have been known to lead to conditions x,y,z. We should not market this to pregnant women and children (but they will anyway)
The regulations regarding recalls needs to be much stronger and clearly defined. Remove the clause for requesting "voluntary recalls". If something has been proven in to be detrimental to the health of the public or environment then the EPA and FDA need to be able to force a recall immediately.
I guess we need to get rid of all the vaccines and pharma drugs that contain toxic chemicals........oops, that will never happen because the FDA, CDC and all the BS agencies in the Government LOVE toxic chemicals.
They control the chemicals and put them in everything from your water, food, air or anything else you use for everyday life. Yes they really are out for your health and safety.......Do not make me puke, they are the ones doing the poisoning of the people. Most of America are too stupid to see the truth.
The AAP is a joke! They willingly inject more chemicals into more babies than any other chemical company in the world. The AAP is a political trade organization that protects the trade interests of its constituents, pediatricians, above all else. It is NOT an objective science organization that it portrays itself to the public as.
Whenever you can, buy products made with natural materials...especially those that will go in your house/living spaces...like wood cupboards, floors, and furniture, cotton sheets, bedding, rugs, etc., stone or brick tile floors (not vinyl) and fireplace surrounds and especially the products you will use for your infant/young children...glass bottles and food containers that will be heated up, stainless steel tableware/utensils (not plastic), cotton padding covers for car seats, cotton clothing and pajamas. You have to be most careful about the products that will heat up, as that increases leaching of chemicals into the surrounding air or liquids. Also make sure you wash childrens's clothing and bedding two times in hot water before using to remove any chemicals added on the fabric. Use wax paper to wrap food in, even if you then put it in a plastic freezer bag or wrap, so that when it freezes and thaws it is not touching the plastic. There is so much we don't have choices on controlling of materials, like car interiors, technology products, etc. but anytime there is a choice, go with natural materials if you can. I think it is a big mistake that so much interior plumbing is now done with plastic/PVC pipes...our waterways are becoming cesspools of toxic stews and contamination. Drink filtered or bottled water and try to eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables...that you grow yourself or wash very well. A hundred years ago we didn't have near so much to worry about in the way of toxic products and contamination. We need to go back to natural materials that do not leach off toxins. I think the age of plastics (made with petroleum) has caused a lot of our problems.
The way the U.S. govt. has been handling things for the past 30 years or so, fails to ptotect the average American in almost every situation. Pick up a history book and read what Regean's deregulation and "trickle down" economics did to us.
The toxic chemicals act should be amended to require all foreign manufacturers to list any hazardous chemicals in their products, and to pay for independent testing of their products by U.S. government approved labs. If they fail to list or be tested - bar them from our market. There is no reason at all that our kids should be subjected to lead, cadmium, and God knows what else from foreign-manufactured toys. If the WTO rules against us, then let's pull out of it. A trade agreement that won't let a country protect its children from imported poisons is worthless anyway.

Agreed, just look at every "Super Fund" site....ever.

Otter, you got that right.
Where are we going to get all the little kids necessary to perform these tests on?
