@ Wildcorndog - in reality, 'overbreeding' has little to do with if your animal will develop diabetes, or not. MOST of the time, developing diabetes in cats/dogs is a diet issue. We feed kibble food that is not species related and extremely high in carbs. MOST commercial dog/cat foods are at LEAST 30% in carbs which is waaaaaaay more than any carnivore needs. Plus, since when is corn good for a cat, (an obligate carnivore), much less good for a dog, (descended from the wolf). A raw diet, or a canned wet food diet, or even a low car kibble food (think Evo), is a MUCH better choice for your pets than Purina, or Beneful.
My cat, now 15, developed type 2 diabetes two years ago after a massive overdose of steroids. Many times, this type of diabetes will fade away in time and is referred to as "transient diabetes". Unfortunately that was not the case for my boy. He is now a diet controlled diabetic, (after 6 months on insulin), but if he gets into anything over 6% in carbs, he will quickly spike into the 300s.
Quit feeding your pets sweets and crappy pet foods. Look at the label on most pet foods and the first ingredient is usually corn. Cats and dogs are carnivores. They need meat not grains and sweats. You ca feed them all the meat they want and they will never become fat or diabetic.
Cornfeeding our dogs, cows, and children. Gee, I can't for the life of me figure out why diabetes is soaring. I'm eating just what the USDA says is good for me.
Oh well, Guess I'll wait for the pharmaceutical companies to save me with better testing and more chemicals. Maybe they'll develop a vaccine so I can eat all of the corn I want without getting diabetes.
This is one more reason to not get an over-bred animal.

Wow, this is simply a completely and totally untrue statement. Was it intended as a joke?
