Honestly. Its one thing if the exotic animal was recenty imported and might be carrying disease, or if its a breeding pair which can wreck havoc on the ecosystem...
But there are far too many dog owners and apologists who get up in arms at any efforts made to regulate their dangerous pets.
It seems that you are quite informed and animated about certain aspects of Broken Arrow animal ownership policies. Why don't you HOP on down to the city counsil offices and voice a complaint. I am not trying to disregard what are probably legitimate concerns, but the truth is that the city counsil made a responsible decision in this case that makes for a very touching story.
SH123, maybe you completely missed the part in the story in which it was this same city council that was going to remove the kangaroo from this lady in the first place. they obviously only allowed her to keep it after making her jump through a bunch of hoops. that doesn't make them compassionate, it makes them thugs.
This is a good story, but I'm curious - they say she can't work because of health reasons... seems to me like she could have gotten a job as an animal caretaker, as she's apparently doing an excellent job with Irwin...
@ Your response that it seems she may be able to work as a caretaker... you may be correct. That it why it is really important to allow people to keep their rehabilitative pets. Sometimes, these people do go on to work and other times, they begin to do volunteer work. Maybe if the city continues to allow her to be a foster mom to this broken Kangaroo that likely would have been put down, she might do that some day. I am glad they can remain close and remain with one another. Way to go city for allowing her to keep her friend! And whoo hoo anonymous benefactor. Now... who is up for paying the insurance next year?
With all that's going on in the world, with all the division between this nation and even the people of this nation it is so refreshing to read a real "feel good" story like this. Just precious! I am forever harping to anyone who will listen about animals, how precious they are, how intelligent they are and how they should all be treated with dignity and given the respect they deserve. Unfortunately I didn't used to be a good "pet mama" and didn't do that. At present I have 4 cats, all who were strays I took in and one in particular has taught me so much about how absolutely, mind blowingly loving and intelligent they can be. She uplifts me every day but she also breaks my heart by making me remember all of the other pets we've had in the past that I didn't love and respect nearly enough.
When I first heard about Irwin and his owner and their plight I had resigned myself to an outcome far different than this. I too, am so happy to see a city council system with common sense and compassion. It seems many of the judicial decisions today are made with little of either in many cases. I'm glad this was not one of them.
God bless both of you, and the council that had the heart to understand that not everything has to be via unbending laws. Thank God compassion rules here.
There's always one. If the kangaroo were suffering, maybe. But the kangaroo is happy and the woman is happy. Win-Win. This type of response is just sad.
He doesn't look like he is suffering to me and seems quite happy to be cared for by his owner. If he was suffering he would certainly make it known by his whining and whimpering. He is simply disabled like any human can be disabled from a bad accident. Would you also suggest we kill all disabled humans because in your narrow mind they too must be suffering?
Who says this little Roo is suffering and tortured??? Sounds like it has no misery, only caring and companionship...and lots of love. Why is this lady unstable??? Your own words betray that you have no place to judge.
If Irwin is Happy, & he obviously is, & he is making his caretaker happy, who the hell are YOU TO SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT. Rember, in your next life you may come back as a injued animal. JERK!!!!
So by your reasoning, we should put every disabled human out of its misery too? Please think before you speak and show the world how ignorant you are!!
Well, there had to one out there with a heart of ice. By the way, instead of spending your time being mean & miserable, you should take a course in spelling - the word is spelled "tortured."
Thank God for the compassionate City Council, the generous anonymous donor of the insurance money and this woman and her love for Irwin. Then, there is you! Maybe you should try rubbing elbows with these people - maybe some of this compassion will rub off on you.
Yet another pithy comment by someone who is not only unable to spell torture, but is also not bright enough to let spellcheck do it for them.
For those of you congratulating the city council, please remember that they ONLY did this because someone came forward and bought the insurance policy that they obviously required because they thought the woman would not be able to afford it and would thus be forced to part with her therapy animal not because they were being unreasonable a$$holes but because she couldn't afford a liability policy, thus letting them at least CLAIM to not bear responsibility for this nonsense.
This story brings a HUGE smile to my face!! So happy that she is able to keep the kangaroo and he's able to stay with her. It's so true what any animal can do for your health. I have depression and have a jack russell named Rocco, he is the best to me know matter the day i'm having or feeling!!
For once a happy ending for a darling, loving creature--and its human! Heartfelt thanks and best wishes to the city council for showing wisdom and compassion--wish I could send everyone a new car! I hope karma rewards you--you did the right thing!
What a beautiful story in a time when bad and ugly news prevails. May God bless both of them with a happy and long life. AND I tip my hat to a compassionate city council and a benevolent donor.
Not for a minute did I wonder that. I seriously doubt it, and would have to see the actual transactions documented in black and white to even consider such a scenario.
Kudos to an intelligent city council and to a caring anonymous benefactor!
Honestly. Its one thing if the exotic animal was recenty imported and might be carrying disease, or if its a breeding pair which can wreck havoc on the ecosystem...

Maybe after this relationship she could try a man. Just sayin'...
I am happy they have found each other. may God bless them in all things
FINALLY.....some GOOD news in this world.
I am so glad to hear that she got to keep him, they need each other. Great job City Council!! A big "Thank You" to the anonymous donor!
Wow, a city council with intelligence and compassion, they may want to set up a university for other city councils nationwide. Seriously....
our city council here in Pueblo, co. could learn a few things from this city council, our council is full of morons
This is a good story, but I'm curious - they say she can't work because of health reasons... seems to me like she could have gotten a job as an animal caretaker, as she's apparently doing an excellent job with Irwin...

That would require regular hours, lifting, walking, things she may not be able to do.
They may have "required" it, but She probably could have said "no", and kept the animal. If they gave her trouble, she could have sued under the ADA.
@Vices - the anonymous benefactor has agreed to pay the insurance premium for as long as Irwin needs it.
@
Congrats. It is stories like these that make America a great place to live.
:) I want one!
It truly is amazing what pets can do to ones mental status. I'm glad she was able to keep him. Adorable picture too.
I wish my wife were as compassionate as this city council. I brought an exotic young woman home for therapy and my wife said she had to go.
Huh?
Dirtydog200, the name fits! You ARE one!
LOL @ Dirty Dog.... Apparently, these folks responding above don't know what levity is. Great response, from someone with a sense of humor. :-)
@ dirtydog.... TOO FUNNY!!!!
country girl and Trudy- you girls wanna hook up later? I'll tell my wife I'm bringing home some bookends.
haha @ dirtydog...keep 'em coming! :0)
It's considered levity when dirtydog disses his wife? You are a bunch of sick puppies.
Grow a sense of humor. It was a joke.
artsylady, must be great at dodge ball, those jokes just fly right over her head. At any rate, she's not invited to my party.
LMAO at DirtyDog!! Good ones!

Most of us must admit the same.
Tenderness comes with age.Sadly I didn't treat pets well when I was young.
At this moment I have two Jack Russells laying on ether side of me
living well.
Don't dwell on the past The future of your pets are whats important
Well done, John. We live and learn. Love the ones you have while they are here to love.

this should never have even been an issue.im glad she gets to keep her kangaroo.
Glad the city council figured it out, though their knee-jerk reaction at first was frustrating.
God bless both of you, and the council that had the heart to understand that not everything has to be via unbending laws. Thank God compassion rules here.
This is great news. There are politicians out there who care about their constituents-all of them. Great job to all who made this happen!
This animal is disabled and suffering, it should be put out of it's misery insted of being torcherd by this obviously unstable person.
There's always one. If the kangaroo were suffering, maybe. But the kangaroo is happy and the woman is happy. Win-Win. This type of response is just sad.
Really?!wtf, your spelling and grammar are torture!
He doesn't look like he is suffering to me and seems quite happy to be cared for by his owner. If he was suffering he would certainly make it known by his whining and whimpering. troll alert!!! troll alert!!!
Phillip,
It wasn't the K9 that was out of control, it was the so-called handler.
This story brings a HUGE smile to my face!! So happy that she is able to keep the kangaroo and he's able to stay with her. It's so true what any animal can do for your health. I have depression and have a jack russell named Rocco, he is the best to me know matter the day i'm having or feeling!!
Research has proved animals are good for people. Here, we have a woman who is being good for an animal.
What's the problem, anyway?
This story made my day! So glad everything turned out positive. May they bring strength & happiness to each other.
Wonderful! They need each other. This is the best new I've had all week. Wonderful!
For once a happy ending for a darling, loving creature--and its human! Heartfelt thanks and best wishes to the city council for showing wisdom and compassion--wish I could send everyone a new car! I hope karma rewards you--you did the right thing!
Justice and compassion. Two things that are all too often lacking in this day and age. And tortured isn't spelled torchered. Maroon.
What a great "feel good" story.
Yeah, some politicians that finally got it right. The animal is diabled but that doens't mean that it's suffering and needs to be killed.
God bless the anonymous person who donated the money for Irwin's insurance.
Woooooot! :) congrats to her
What a beautiful story in a time when bad and ugly news prevails. May God bless both of them with a happy and long life. AND I tip my hat to a compassionate city council and a benevolent donor.
Anyone else wonder if the 'donor' might not be all the counsel members together donating for the cause?
Not for a minute did I wonder that. I seriously doubt it, and would have to see the actual transactions documented in black and white to even consider such a scenario.
