Backcountry - Rick Perry sure seems to think they their money would help him be effective now that his "small government" attitude has gotten Texas in trouble.
Funny how everyone hates government until they are the ones who need the handout.
The safety of your children is at stake. This company, while fully knowing the product is unsafe and needs to be changed, will not set aside its greed. Profit despite hurting the children of its customers, is the motive. greedy greedy people.
Or maybe the company believes that the problem lies not with the product, but with incompetent users failing to properly tighten the clamps and inspect their installation.
This type of product should not require a certified mechanic for installation. The product should be recalled or either made safe or destroyed. We should know by now that cheap products from certain countries (China being one) need a thorough inspection before being put on the market and letting people get hurt.
This type of product should not require a certified mechanic for installation.
Certified mechanic? How about basic competence? If our gov mandates that everything be made safe even for the stupidest people in the country we'd all need to wear bubble wrap suits and be forced to remain indoors at all times.
Twelve children have been injured, and that's sad. But there have probably been a million or more of these chairs sold, and they have been around for years. Do we recall every product where there is a tiny percentage of users injured? We better take cars, bikes, bats, balls and pretty much everything else on the planet off the market. If you can't tighten two screws sufficiently tight to make the chair safe, you probably shouldn't be allowed to have the child in the first place.
Just look at it. I always thought it was unsafe anyhow. Duh. Can't believe they are still around. A chair is supposed to have legs my dad used to say. Me and my wife used to joke about them as being a way to thin the herd as far as people with no common sense go. Seriously, you are going to trust two cheap clips to hold up your baby. Babies and toddlers don't exactly sit still. If you actually bought one of these, lets face it, you have no sense and probably shouldn't have kids anyhow.
As far as the government getting involved, do you really need to? Think there are more important things to do.
I've given them to all the Republicans in my neighborhood. They promise that they will never ask for handouts, or in the case of requiring amputation, nub-outs.
The tea party people will say, "Eliminate government oversite!" Who are the feds to think they should oversee the blessed actions of the Invisible Hand of Adam Smith!
Yes I do look in the mirror a lot. But I don't see someone that is ignorant, like the tea partiers.
Tea Party people are violently against government intervention. Blindly against it.
Like the evil EPA. And financial reform.
The Tea Party has ideals, and no pragmatism.
They are anit-American, despite their name. The same ideals existed prior to having a black president, but it took an intelligent Obama to bring out their true colors.
Of course it's not safe, look at it! Why would anyone in their right mind trust their child's safety to clips that attach to a table with no support underneath???? The first time I ever saw this chair I knew it was dangerous. Common sense.
The article clearly states that tens of thousands of these chairs have been sold and there have only been a dozen injuries, apparently, none of them serious. They aren't held in place with "clips"; the picture clearly shows clamps. This product looks perfectly safe to me as long as it is properly installed and the clamps adequately tightened. I can see tossing one of these in the trunk for picnics and those occasions where the restaurant has run out of child seats.
Instead of the gov “fool proofing” every aspect of our lives perhaps they should just round up all of the fools and put them in padded rooms where they couldn’t possibly hurt themselves or others. That way the rest of us can get on with our lives.
It's a parents choice to buy the chair or not. Installed properly, I can't see that it would be dangerous. It would also depend on the size of the child you put in it. Since we don't know the circumstances of how the kids mentioned in the article got hurt, we can't judge whether this product is safe or not. I know too many parents who don't watch their kids and that is usually when the kid gets hurt. Any decent parent knows you have to keep an eye on small kids.
Without being an engineer, I can tell you from the design of this baby "chair", that it is something I would have NEVER ever bought for my kids. It looks too flimsy!
I wonder how is it that so many of us survived growing up in the 50,60s,70s without even 1/4 of all these safety locks, toilet locks, special chairs, special this and special that! In those days, we didn't even have 1/20 of all the toys kids have these days! It seems that the more "special baby this or baby that gadgets" are, the more accidents there are. Stop using them, raise your kids the good old fashioned way!
I am not saying that we never had accidents, it's just that if it happened, no big deal and no suing ever involved. We just got smacked or spanked, and learned never to do it again!
The good old fashioned way contained all the incidents of children choking, getting maimed or otherwise injured and dying that forced lawmakers to examine ways to help prevent those things from happening.
If you were a mother whose child got hurt or killed in this way, you might not be so cavalier in your assessment of how things "should" be.
But of course, no one should expect you to try to exercise some empathy for others, or walk a mile in someone else's shoe, huh?
I am a father of two and a engineer and have used this chair every day for the past two years and have never had a issue with it. Follow the directions and you wont have an issue!
A good old fashioned high chair is what a baby or toddler should be in. And anyone that walks away from their kid while in one, is ummmm......... fill in the blank with whatever.
You are SO right. We should be able to buy as many unsafe products as we want.
I'm going to buy a Pinto covered in lead paint and drive 100mph, high on crack, with my kids strapped to the roof. I'd like to see our big scary government try and stop me.
Way to grasp moral equivalence johnson79. Someday when you leave your mother's basement you will see most adults have no problem navigating through the big scary world without help from the government.
You know what??? There is something called common sense. We don't need everthing banned because they are used irresponsibly or there are accidents sometimes.
I used these with no problem at all....but precaution has to be taken with everthing used for babies.
And monkeys could fly out of your 4$$, but that's not a design flaw in the product that makes it inherently unsafe.
In fact, I'd venture to guess that I'd pay for a chair that could make monkeys fly out of your 4$$, so maybe you'd stop talking out of it for one second.
While I agree, whole heartedly, that the responsibility is upon the parents, it is also upon the shoulders of the Government. We, the people, of the United States of America, have created the problems we complain about most. We, through frivolous suits, and continuous court actions, have created the neccessity for our Government to be involved. Perhaps, everyone with a complaint about the Government, should look in the mirror to find the true culprit to todays "Over Involved Government." The company is also responsible for the product, it's called commerce laws. We the people, caused those laws to be enacted. A cup of coffee was too hot, so now, after a foolish suit, and large settlement that followed, all drink cups have to be labeled. We complain constantly, and then complain again when the Government tries to please us. Is the chair safe? Likely not. Should it be recalled? Most likely yes. Should the company share the responsibility? Yes, but only because of the willful neglect to address the continued complaints. Should the parents be held accountable? Absolutely!!. Should the Government be tasked to handle it? I think not, however, history, and society, have made it mandatory.
Hey joe- I do not blame "We the People" for the lawsuits and such. There is always going to be idiots out there trying to get something for nothing or get something for not having common sense. The only ones to blame are the judges and juries. These people who sue over everything wouldn't get a dime if the judge/jury would look at the case with common sense and laugh the idiot out of court.
Another moronic product for people who shouldn't have kids anyway. Maybe they should leave it in the stores so more idiots cannot be born to those families!
This is really rather simple. If you believe they are unsafe, whuch I do as well. Don't buy one. I didn't buy one, so I had no problem with this product. I didn't need the Goverment telling me not to buy one of these. People (parents) need to be able to make thier own decisions. If you want to buy one of these, that is your choice. Don't agree with you, but then you probably didn't ask me anyway. If we keep allowing the Goverment to tell us what we can't buy, soon they will be telling us what we must buy instead.
More inferior Chinese junk that flooded our market and the corporations that imported this junk rather rake in the profits on overprice junk from China and does not want to take the responsibility to take their jink back, nevertheless they rather your children to get hurt then their profits.
I used these with both of my kids, now 28 & 22, with no problems. They both loved them. Sounds like a parent problem, not checking them during use. Have some brains people-these are not foolproof, check on them during use.

Anyone with the slightest trace of mechanical aptitude can look at the product photo and instantly recognize the inherent instability. So how does crap like this get past the CSPC in the first place?
Years ago I had a table top chair (sturdier than this one) that worked great for my second child. No injuries or falls. I wouldn't have bought this type as the clamps could be difficult at times on different tables and may not get tightened enough. It's too bad things are made so cheaply now. Mine was great.
Why can't the company be forced to recall the product?
because i like my government small, and completely unable to do anything.
sarcasm intended
...because it's probably made in China!!!
Why should they be? We've been warned of the potential problem, is that not enough for parents to make up their own minds?
Right because a massive government that trips over it's own feet has proven to be so effective.
sarcasm intended
Backcountry - Rick Perry sure seems to think they their money would help him be effective now that his "small government" attitude has gotten Texas in trouble.
Funny how everyone hates government until they are the ones who need the handout.
Only stupid people like big government because they are not smart enough to run their own lives like the rest of us!
Why can't the company be forced to recall the product?
Because there is nothing wrong with it. It is the gross incompetence of the user.
The safety of your children is at stake. This company, while fully knowing the product is unsafe and needs to be changed, will not set aside its greed. Profit despite hurting the children of its customers, is the motive. greedy greedy people.

What the company believes is irrelevant. What matters is what the law says, and what regulators can do.
Oh, and, you know, what is right.
But corporations aren't in business to do what is right, right?
My formula;
Under-education leads to over-regulation.
In my opinion, most kids will be fine as long as their parents actually do their jobs and parent and pay attention to the kid and the chair.
Just look at it. I always thought it was unsafe anyhow. Duh. Can't believe they are still around. A chair is supposed to have legs my dad used to say. Crawl back in your hole and stop embarrassing yourself.
"Amputation hazard" is a feature I always look for in products, especially those intended for children. Roll eyes.
Let's go to laissez faire!
Uninformed, angry, bigots.
Take a look in the mirror much?
Yes I do look in the mirror a lot. But I don't see someone that is ignorant, like the tea partiers.

Are you able to get dressed in the morning by yourself?
Without being an engineer, I can tell you from the design of this baby "chair", that it is something I would have NEVER ever bought for my kids. It looks too flimsy!

Hate to see anyone get hurt, especially the innocent child. However the parent made the mistakes here.
1. They decided to buy this product. I agree this was mistake #2
2. They didn't probably use it, and must likely never actually read the instructions on how to correctly attach it in the first place.
3. So now they can either face the fact they are also at fault, or just blame the company that mades the product.
In the good old days children died. When that happened parents just walked it off and had another one. Not great parenting.
I am a father of two and a engineer and have used this chair every day for the past two years and have never had a issue with it. Follow the directions and you wont have an issue!

Love this comment, x!
I couldn't agree more. I could tell just by looking at them they weren't safe. Just because somebody sell something, doesn't mean it's safe.

Cantilever a hamburger off a car window, yes. Cantilever a baby off a table, not so smart.
Another moronic product for people who shouldn't have kids anyway. Maybe they should leave it in the stores so more idiots cannot be born to those families!
Crash, Bang, MY BABY! Oh well I have 12 more!
The only thing wrong with this seat is the idiot who installs it wrong. That's the number one problem with most recalls. To bad stupid is incurable.
Maybe they should recall some parents.
