When I see these women all I can do is shake my head and ask, "Now why on earth did they do that to their lives?" Most of us find ourselves in this circumstance from time to time, of course. Some of us find ourselves in that situation for years on end. But priding yourself on going through life too busy to contemplate the world around you doesn't make any sense to me.
my mother works a substance abuse counselor. she left on disability due to imminent risk of a stroke and high blood pressure. its not about being busy. in today's world we have elected politics that will systematically deroot people from a job to save money. NOW THAT'S STRESS. they changed her work load to the point where it was physically impossible to even be in a place at a time you were supposed to because the breakdown of time her work consumed would be so much that her employers wouldnt leave even enough time to eat a lunch. she was constantly having to review her schedule requests from her superiors, when she left for the stroke risk, they cut her pay for two months ILLEGALLY and DIDNT take any from her vacation time. then when she contacted her union rep about that, they deliberately waited 2-3 weeks before sending her money that she should have gotten all along. they put multiple paychecks together into one so an enormous chunk of taxes were taken out; so the budget she had set up was pretty much useless and she was missing money she normally would have gotten if she had gotten paid correctly in the first place. dont ever judge a book by its cover. i almost lost my mother to her stupid job.
Federal and state wage and labor laws state that all workers get 2 breaks and 1 lunch per 8 hours. Of course, the trend is to ignore that, even among the government workers, as we drift toward the 3rd world.
I don't think this is a gender issue at all. There's lots of these "you wouldn't believe how busy I am" martyr types... The old truism is still true...'If you want something done, give it to a busy person.' Those are the folks who just get it done...instead of spending all of their whining about getting it done.
(As soon as you realize just how unimportant most of the stuff is that stresses you out...you begin to learn how to let it go and prioritize. What you think you'll never get through...you get through...what you think you can't do, you do...makes you much better at recognizing what you need to do next go around.)
Both men and women can be 'drama queens'. Either is making him or herself look absurd at best when being "proud" of all the stress they are under and how wonderfully successful they are.
They are not really all that productive. I have supervised a few of them and the quiet, organized and not-a-scatterbrained employee is way more productive and doesn't make a big deal out of it.
I just wish they would get off the phone while driving. I have several near misses a week with people that are too busy to be bothered with not driving into me.

Stress? Do you mean working to the full potential of your being? Perhaps you are referring to falling in love with all aspects of the company you work for and giving the 100% necessary to make them a success. Then again, it could be a referral to believing in the worthiness of your staff only to find out that work is a four letter word to them. Whatever, this stress thing is a component of a male life, females not invited.
"Working to the full potential of your being" isn't a male thing. (just how old or how isolated ARE you??) One of the most accomplished AND most LAID back people I know is an emergency room physician with 3 kids...a mom. One of the most stressed out under-achievers? A guy who is retired and living alone. Working well and working smart isn't a gender thing. (For instance, I know lots of very accomplished males that have enough confidence to let their intelligence and work ethic speak for itself, without any need to be condescending.)
I find this "I-work-24/7-so-I'm-SO-stressed" image trite and inaccurate. REAL stress stems from situations beyond your control--like getting laid off, being told your job is being relocated, losing a loved one, etc. I'm the type of person that I like to keep busy; however, it's not due to a desire to remain stressed. Instead, I find that I'm more apt to be productive when I do so because it prevents me from "wasting time" doing meaningless activities.
I agree. We choose the behaviors we indulge in over and over. I would extend the analysis further: people who do not get flu shots choose a higher risk of sickness; the obese choose to be at high risk for disease, people who smoke (as I did) choose to die sooner than others; people who do not exercise choose to become feeble, etc. Of course, I am assuming no disability here.
Unfortunately, few people agree, because--though people say they believe in free will, when it comes to their own behavior, few do. And the blame game goes on. . .
"Try saying something like, "Wow, it sounds like you have a tough week ahead. What will you do to take care of yourself?" Says Orma:". What an idiotic thing to say to somebody.
Word to the wise-Actually try meditating or saying the word calm to yourself. After a while you can meditate in a mere 3 minutes or at a stop light. However, for those who think they are great multitaskers, be advised that science has proven only 20% of those who think they are, truly are.

Guess I'm not a stress seeker.

Sorry, but stress isn't just "there." It's all in your mind, and you can disappear it in a second - if you want to. Stress isn't real.
Yes, most stress is mental, for sure. Have any suggestions for making it go away "in 1 second"? I'd sure love to hear it.
I've got two: Age and experience.

Women love DRAMA! so i agree with this study
Universal statements about people are usually untrue. The biggest drama 'queen' I currently know is a man.
fgh,

I hate being over stressed. I give it 5 more years then I can quit it all winter in the south / summer in the north and only work if and when I please
