Diabetes causes higher cancer rates! ...Except we even said further down the page where people are less likely to read that there's nothing to demonstrate that fact.
There is a correllation, not a causality. Period. For all we know, it's exposure to environmental chemical that all these people have in common, or its genetic, or hormonal, or the fact that they watch more TV. In other words, there's no helpful information here. I get SO DISGUSTED with these crap breathless pseudoscience articles.
Shame on MSNBC for such a fear mongering headline. Maybe diabetics have higher rates of diagnosed cancer. Given that they see a doctor more frequently (usually 4 times a year at least), maybe their cancer is being picked up sooner or more frequently. This "study" is not science. While it may suggest a correlation, epidemiologic data does not back it up.
this is such an irresponsible article. there are two kinds of diabetes, and i have type one. i assume this study was on type 2 diabetics, but it does not say. this is a serious fault on the part of the writer, as type 2 diabetics are typically in bad health, do not exercise and eat terribly, which is why they get type 2 and likely cancer. Being a type 1 (which means my pancreas no longer produces insulin) I am constantly frustrated with the assumption that all diabetes is the same kind. The comments left here give me hope, though- seems the people who read the article and cared to comment are thinking types. thanks!
Beth - you took the words right out of my mouth. There is no credibility to this story if they don't even mention whether the high risk for cancer refers to Type I or Type II diabetics. I am also a Type I diabetic and read the article because of it. I think it is merely a scare tactic for those Type II's that don't take care of themselves (there are those Type II's out there who are not overweight and take better care of themselves - but they are in the minority).
Reading the story concerned me, but reading the comments put it in perspective. Having diabetes and other health issues, I do NOT need anything else to worry about!
Telephone surverys? You all read the posts, all over the web in various discussion groups, of how ppl FEEL about being polled by telephone? These results have the same degree of validity as those anonymous sex quizzes us guys got in high school in '75. Besides, as been said, we're fat, sedentary, lazy and stupid - diabetes, cancer, baldness and poor judgment @ the polls are just the price we pay...
Hi, My name is Abdirahim O Dimbil I am diabetic for the last 8 years and I Live in Somalia where there is no Medicine and Qualified doctors together, I read last study of Diabetic journal which I see the high risk (The Link between Cancer and Diabetic), What is yr advice you give me to avoid this risk
I have read where the insulin Lantus causes cancer cells to grow more rapidly, I wonder why this wasn't mentioned in the article. With the mention of the higher morbidity rate for diabetics with cancer I would question what relationship some synthetic insulins might have to do with this.
I must respectively counter, please: I have Type 2 diabetes. I was diagnosed at the age of 38. I did not get diabetes because I was fat, lazy and made poor diet choices. My lifestyle was quite the opposite. So, please consider Type 2 diabetics as being their fault. In both sets (1 and 2), there is a significant health factor that triggers both - not just being lazy and fat.
Ouch! Now on top of constant medicating and monitoring you will need additional cancer screenings done. It's a sucker punch! :( but good to know.

I meant to say, "please *don't* consider Type 2 diabetics as being their faults."
Is the link between cancer and Type 1 diabetes or Type 2 diabetes? As an individual with Type 1 diabetes, this is a very important distinction for me.
