Babies of diabetic and obese mothers tend to be born with extra body fat. These babies tend to be delivered by C-section because they are too big to be delivered vaginally. (Look up "Shoulder Dystocia").
These babies also have a higher tendency to develop metabolic diseases when they're adults (and the fact that they tend to live w/ fat parents whose bad habits are passed on).
C-sections are 1/3 of deliveries and a function of income/health insurance , though the article politely states education level. It would be interesting to know the breast-feeding rate for mothers that deliver only by C-section considering that only 1% of US and UK mothers bother to breastfeed for six months despite the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendation of a *minimum* of six months.
I'd want to see some data on the employment status of the moms. I know a bunch of high-powered career women who opted for elective C-sections as it made it easier to plan their maternity leave that way. These women also tend to be big users of less-healthy "convenience" foods and takeout. It's not the C-section per se that would be at fault for any obesity in the kids, but rather the poor diet.
I have had two children and both were delivered by c-section. One is very lean and the other is overweight, both being at the extreme end of their respective charts. Yet both are healthy and active and are responsible about their food consumption. I am a college graduate, yet both c-sections were medically necessary due to the conformation of my pelvis. I breastfed both for over 1 year. We share meals as a family at all times possible. The children are now both young adults. I do believe I know why both children have struggled in their eating issues (anorexia and obesity) and thankfully, after counseling and major changes, are no longer exhibiting those issues. They do live with me and I am within 7-10 pounds of my ideal weight. I would say that the study is showing correlations that don't exist, in my experience.
Just because your personal experience doesn't match up does not mean that there isn't a correllation. A correllation has clearly been shown in this study (and others, by the way). But a correllation doesn't mean much. It means these factors are in some way connected. Period. The connection could be deceptive, or explained by population bias (say, income level, environmental factors, etc.), and does not have to 100%. Correllations do not demonstrate how, or why, something exists, only that it does.
To use the now-famous example, think Pirates vs Global Warming from the Flying Spaghetti Monster website. Although there is a correllation between decline of pirate populations ang global temperatures going up, that doesn't mean that one has caused the other.
If you guys are going to diss scientific discoveries, at least learn the nomenclature first.
Are you kidding me!!! Now we're going to blame fat kids on C-Sections, just last year it was breast feeding, now C-Sections. How about the fact some families let their kids eat why too much fast food and processed packaged foods. How about the fact that many schools only have P.E. classes once or twice a week where some kids don't even have to participate in the sport/class if they don't want too.
I guess they'll come up with anything excuse execpt of course,, for personal responsibility!!!
I thought that it was people who were highly overweight during pregnancy and thus were more likely to have a cesarean? So based on that, sounds more like a genetic issue.

This article has this all backwards!

According to the CDC's 2010 "Breastfeeding Report Card", the percentage of moms in the U.S. who are still breastfeeding at 6 months is actually 43%.

Studies are about showing common behavior. They may not apply to you, but they probably apply to your neighbors.

"C sections may make you fat"
C'mon..........
You want society to believe that it's the C-section itself that causes obesity?
Okay....I'll play - are we on candid camera?

Did you read the part in the article that mentioned infant exposure to beneficial vaginal bacteria?
So we should rub C-section newborns with the mother's vaginal fluids to give them this bacteria?
What about babies who are born with meconium? Do they absorb the mother's beneficial intestinal bacteria?
How about feeding kids right, ensuring plenty of exercise, and modeling desired behaviors?
This is so incredibly stupid!
