Many of the sunblocks also contain endocrine disrupters, such as oxybenzone. These substances can interfere with sex hormones and might have an impact on sexual development and reproduction.
Oxybenzone is the only one name. What are the rest of them?
The real story here should be "sunscreens cause cancer and lead to vitamin D deficiency in millions of Americans, causing skin cancers and other cancers to skyrocket".
The big pharma PR machine is hard at work again today!! Get some sun people and stop believing all the big pharma lies.
See the odd thing is, there is a plant based additive, can't remember the name off hand, that is far more effective at blocking UVA and UVB than the sunscreens on the market currently, but yet it is illegal for use in the U.S. and nothing is really being done to legalize it for use in sunblocks.
Eric, the government doesn't regulate ingredients found in "cosmetic" products like sunscreen (though frankly they probably should). The only reason it would need to be legalized is if it was categorized as a pharmaceutical, like benadryl or antibiotics.
See my comment below (#12). There are some good product safety sites to look at that will give you ingredient information. My favorite is ewg.org/skindeep
Just because Consumer Reports names the best sunscreen doesn't mean it's the best for your health. At least possible adverse health effects was mentioned by CR. EWG has a great database that lets you search sunscreen by name and will give you a health hazard score for ingredients.
I for one have had alot of success with Banana Boat SPF 80. I am VERY FAIR skinned so I keep sunscreen with me at all times. For those who are concerned with he risks all I can say id I dont care if I cant have any kids as long as I am not feeling like @!$%# because my skin is blistering and peeling. I lived in FL for over 10 years so having a tinted window car, air conditioner and sunscreen are a must to survive down there.
WOW! They actually admitted that sunscreens can CAUSE cancer! Next, they need to tell people how the use of sunscreens has led to widespread deficiencies of vitamin D.
There are more cases of skin cancer now then back when people wasnt so crazy about using it. You think it could be the chemical active ingredients that are in 99% of all american sold sunscreens. These chemical active ingredients are banned in Europe! They are a little a head of the game over there. Their government or FDA is not out to make money, they are informing and protecting their people. My family uses sunscreen without active ingredients and we never get burnt. We have lived in hot, sunny places like California, Florida and Alabama. It can be hard to find suncreens without the active ingredients but they are out there and on the internet. Hopefully soon those will be the only one you can buy.
There are several reasons why there are more skin cancer cases today than there used to be:
1. People are living longer
2. Doctors know how to diagnose it better
3. People are DELIBERATELY tanning themselves into oblivion. Tanning salons didn't exist 50 years ago, and people stayed out of the sun when they could. If you get a tan, you've had UV exposure, which causes skin cancer. Full stop.
And sunscreens without "active ingredients" aren't sunscreens - "active ingredients" are any ingredients that make the product work!
Not true. Tanning in moderation is not bad for you, it actually is healthy to get Vitamin D. Skin cancer is only caused from a sunburn not from getting a moderate tan. That is why skin cancer will more likely happen to fair skin people that only burn and dont get a tan. I have used sunscreen without active ingredients for over 11 years for myself and my family and like I said we have never burnt. So, it does work and so it does for all of Europe that spend weeks of vacationing in Greece, Spain, Italy etc.
This is interesting because my Dermatologist recommend Neutrogena 70 to 110+. I am going to print off this study and show it to him and look to see if it contains any of the dangerous ingredients. I am a firm believer in the AVON sunscreen, it is just hard to find .
Wear a hat with a brim all the way around and a loose white cotton shirt. I burn in 10 minutes and can't wear sunscreens. Unless I'm lap swimming I have my hat and cotton t-shirt on in the pool. Funny looks are better than being burned or never going out in the sun.
There are several on-line sites that analyze product ingredients for potentially harmful affects. The up&up sunscreen which won 1st for effectiveness rates a 7 on the 0-10 toxicity scale at the Environmental Working group's website (ewg.org/skindeep). The site explains in detail why it gave that rating to the product.
EWG's and other sites like it are an amazing resource if you tend to have sensitive skin, or if you have small kids. You may be surprised about some products you thought were safe!
They failed to mention that the most expensive sunscreen (La Roche Posay) happens to be one of the only products without endocrine disruptors. I use it every day. Here in the keys it is essential to protect against the sun and I worried about being covered with these known endocrine disruptors 15 hours per day, every day. Perhaps there is an overreaction to the hazards of these chemicals, but since there is little data on the long-term effects it is best to be careful, especially if you use sunscreen every day.
I would like to clarify water resistance testing with regards to Badger sunscreen.
The FDA only allows the claims 'Water Resistant' or 'Very Water Resistant' to be used on sunscreens sold in the USA. 'Water Resistant' means that the sunscreen retains its original SPF value after 40 minutes in vigorous warm water (a hot tub) and 'Very Water Resistant' means that the sunscreen retains its original SPF value after 80 minutes in vigorous warm water. These tests must be conducted by a third party laboratory (usually the same lab that tests the SPF value of the sunscreen).
All of Badger's sunscreens passed the 'water resistant' test with flying colors. Our SPF30+ All Season Face Stick passed the 80 minute test so we can call it ‘very water resistant’. Additinonally Badger passed COLIPA's required water resistant testing for the European Union. We passed their 80 minute test and are now having our sunscreens tested for 80 minutes of water resistance here in the US.
With all due respect to Consumer Reports, perhaps their role would be better suited checking to see if companies who claim water resistance have the documentation to back it up. Badger's sunscreens are tested and approved for at least 40 minutes - if they were approved for at least 80 minutes, we would have labeled them as 'very water resistant'.
Yes, this really seems like someone planted this story today, as they are missing out on giving us the IMPORTANT facts about buying a sunscreen - its NOT about PRICE, as much as it is about SAFETY and EFFECTIVENESS. We need to be wary as consumers when it comes from some media channels. And I'm actually annoyed that Consumer Reports did not do their homework.
Most of the cheap ones contain harmful chemicals, which they aren't telling you. I mean Target and CVS, really?? I will rather pay a couple dollars extra now, then have to deal with issues later.
Check out EWG's list of recommended SAFE sunscreens for you or your family -
I shudder to think of how this article made it's way to this point without mentioning the more than 80,000 chemical compounds that have graced our cosmetics industry in the past twenty years!
Just as you read food labels you need to be reading your personal care product labels and learn to understand the ingredient list!
The average woman uses 12-18 compounds on their face and body each day (without make up) and many of these chemicals, synthetics, fragrances petroleum additives and preservatives and the like are directly related to a multitude of health related diseases.
You simply cannot trust your own health and that of your family to what is on the shelves, in your favorite magazine or in stores now!
Well this goes up against the listing today from EWG. Might want to check that one out also.

I checked that site and they give generally the same info, but do not list any specific products....HOW does that help?

Hmm. So I can get cancer from the sun, or, I can get cancer from the sunblock and have problems getting it up or impregnating my future wife.
All I have to say is "hat please?"

What about No-Ad? (I've been using Banana Boat sport spray for several years - easy and non-sticky.)
