Stay away from "organic" products. They may be fertilized using feces (human or animal), contaminated with e-coli bacteria. It happened many times in the past.
Also stay from people making uninformed comments like the one above. Without any substantiation, a comment like "It happened many times in the past" is ridiculous. Let's wait for the results of the investigation instead of making a lame comment like "stay away from 'organic' products".
I'm giving away my age a bit, but I don't remember this happening back in the day that you had to buy vegetables "in season" at all. It used to be that if you went to the produce section looking for a veggie/fruit out of season, then you were out of luck. Nowadays you're always in luck, but the price is you can get infected and die.
Try to buy as much of your produce from local farmer's markets whenever possible.
If you have the opportunity to buy directly at the farm, do so. The local farmers and produce growers eat the same fruits and veggies that they sell. I very highly doubt that someone who eats what they grow is going to do anything to harm their food supply.
Not to mention that fresh from the farm always tastes better.
Thanks "Scienceguy51" for the link. I needed a good laugh. The ridiculous information on your link completely contradicts itself. "Test Spanning 50 Years Proves Pesticides Do Not Cause Cancer." 4 paragraphs down, trying to convince us that foreign organics can't be trusted (which I do agree with), it says "but they may have been sprayed with illegal cancer-causing insecticides." What a joke. How about these recent headlines:
I'm sure that grapefruit extract (known as GSE) is possible to prevent this infection. It is very strong, natural antibiotic active against E. coli. It is worth to try it because this bacteria is strongly resistant on syntetic antibiotic. GSE acts quickly especially in the alimentary canal in very low concentration.

I actually want the good old days back.

I don't eat cucumbers. You never know where they've been.
If anyone has read any of his other posts for other articles you would know where he probably keeps his cucumbers.
Sorry MJHolt but Greg is right. See:

For once it's NOT the US getting the contaminated veggies.
Trace the source of the water.
