Yes, they can help prevent cancer. But the side effects are TERRIBLE. I've taken one of these drugs for four years now. I am 32, and feel as if I am 92. Quality of life needs to be considered before pushing these pills.
"Pfizer Inc.'s Aromasin cut the risk of developing breast cancer by more than half, without the side effects that have curbed enthusiasm for other prevention drugs, a major study found."
it's a choice you have to make and everyone has different physiology/genetics and will experience different effects. every xenobiotic you put in your body will cause some type of undesired effect...from the food we eat to the medication we take to the chemicals you rub on your skin. you have to decide if it's worth it for you, depending on the risk group you are in.
@ Cyber D, thank you, I can read. Just go and google Aromasin/ Femara/ can't remember the other pne right now (part of that brain fog that apparently doesn't exist on these drugs) and see how many people agree with the "no side effects" garbage.
Do I sound bitter? Yes. Yes, I am. I'm also incredibly sore in all my joints and bones, take daily doses of Vicodin, have developed osteopenia, have gained 25 lbs that I can't shake, have lost any desire for "healthy" relations with my husband, take a handful of other pills to counter the (nonexistant) side effects of this drug, have had to cut my hours at work, have massive hot flashes and zero enthusiasm for life. Prior to 2006, I was in my 20's, newly married, active (half marathoner, in fact), emotionally stable and enjoying life. Six surgeries later and thousands of dollars poorer, my quality of life has deteriorated beyond my wildest expectations.
Thanks for your concern in highlighting those words for me. Silly me... must have missed all of Pfizer's reassuring babble while throwing up and taking pain pills.
I just finished my fifth year in an international study where I took Exemestane once a day as well as once a month had a shot of triptorelin for ovarian suppression. Yes I had side effects, hot flashes (sometimes three times in an hour) and weight gain (yuk) but I don't have money to give to research so I figured this was my way to perhaps find a way to prevent this same thing happening to another female. I'm glad I finished but I would go through it again in a heartbeat. I hated filling out the quality of life surveys but understood they are just as important part of the protocol as the pills and shots.
I just finished my fifth year taking exemestane once a day as well as a monthly shot of triptorelin for ovarian suppression. This is an international study that I chose to participate in as I don't have money to give to cancer research but felt that participation in this protocol could be beneficial to some female in the future. Yes I had hot flashes and weight gain, but in the big picture I figured this was a small price to pay to help. I am looking forward to deep sixing the extra lbs and perhaps the hot flashes will subside, but looking back at the last five years I wouldn't have changed a thing.
I have been on Femara for about 1 1/2 years. Over a period of time the pain in my joints and muscles has been getting worse. Not to mention the sleepless nights and hot flashes. About 10 days ago my doctor has pulled me off the drug for one month. I am already feeling better. Please know that you have a choice, taking a drug that may decrease your risk of a reoccurance of breast by 1 or 2 percent but might also decrease your quality of life.
time to quit shilling out millions to big pharma for shoddy products full of side effects and other risks...just legalize it already. it really is a miracle plant...
I am 52, had my lumpectomy in February, just finished radiation, and now must make my choice about taking tamoxafin for 5 years. My lymph nodes were clear, my BRACA was negative and my chance for reoccurrence is 6%. Not sure if it is worth the side effects.
I am sorry to ask personal questions, but this is information I need to know. Did she take tamoxafin and where and how long after did it reoccurr? I am greatful if you would share this because I am really at a crossroad.
Yes, she took tamoxafin. The recurrence was two years after the initial lesion. I wish you the very best. Please lest me know if you have any other questions.

My wonderful wife had an identical profile as yours. She died 6 years ago. Please take the pills.

I wouldn't go around trusting Pfizer too much.
