I've washed fruits and vegetables with soap or dish detergent and water. I have even used a mild solution of bleach-water and detergent to wash fruit and vegetables that are eaten raw. As long as you rinse well afterwards to remove the detergent and or bleach, it won't do you any harm and is pretty much guaranteed to remove 99.999% of bacteria.
My mother soaked everything that she wasn't going to cook thoroughly i.e. lettuce and such in a large bowl of cold water........she would swish in a tablespoon or two of salt and then soak it for a bit....a good rinse after letting it soak and all was good...I continue that practice to this very day...and I am 64 years old....
