Gee, funny how it just seems to crop up here and there......hmmmm. Either from one plant and an inspector with "dirty" gloves or some employee who was not trained well. Just saying. And it looks like they are tap dancing as fast as they can for an answer because the public just ain't buying it. No pun intended.
Sprouts are notoriously hard to keep free from E. coli bacteria. The way they are grown - heat, humidity, nutrients - is ideal for bacterial growth. All it takes is a few flies buzzing around the farm to get the entire batch contaminated. They land on manure pile and then they land on the sprouts - that is all it takes.
And washing sprouts thoroughly is not easy: most bacteria needs actual scrubbing to be removed from a surface - just rinsing with water is not enough.
While I normally don't subscribe to the "ET's killed JFK and caused 9/11" fringe on overnight talk radio, I agreed with the recent guests who believe that there is something sinister afoot here. Germany has one of, if not the, toughest food standards in the world, and I highly doubt that this is some random occurrence .
Source is illegal criminal aliens that don't practice proper hygiene and sanitation habits. Using the fields as a bathroom and not washing your hands frequently is NO-NO.
I have heard the Dutch have a nasty illegal criminal alien infestation.
Thank goodness we have illegal criminal aliens to blame for things though, huh. I'm mean it couldn't be poor conditions at the processing plants or contamination during transport. That would just be too weird. It obviously has to be the illegal criminal aliens. Those bastards have had it out for us since day one.
Let me look, hmm, I did not read if there was any conditions there like you described. Obviously you do not know the purpose of research labs, they work with and manipulate what they are looking for to see what they can and can not do. if they can not do what they want they find a way or process to get the results they want. They are excellent at manipulation.
In nature you might need feces, but when science gets involved all bets are off. Like I said, they find a way to get what they want.
You idiotic media people will have the entire Produce industry completely ruined by the time you get done with your "shotgun" guess-work reporting! Why don't you just shut the He l l up until you have something concrete to tell us. You don't give a shi t t what you do to businesses and industry!

Given that these strains appear to be "new" or at least unknown, has anyone entertained the possibility bio warfare from some group? I wouldn't jump to that conclusion due to the panic factor, but it has to be on the extra long list of possibilities.

It's time to use radiation to kill the bacteria, farmers and meat packers seem unable to use proper sanitation methods and the number of inspectors are insufficient to do a proper job. Sloppy sanitation should be reason enough for these people to be denyed the right to sell there products for human consumption, but when will that happen?
The article states: "All cases have been traced back to near Hamburg in northern Germany."
The Germans don't seem too good at epidemiology. How about if they look for the E. coli source in the Hamburg area, rather than blaming the Spaniards and the Netherlanders?
People should eat irradiated produce only. It's ridiculous that we have to eat raw in the age of E. Coli. The only irradiated food we have here in the USA are some spices and young Thai coconuts imported from Thailand. Does radiation harm food? No. Does it damage the nutritional content? Not that we can tell. Consumers should be given a choice if we want to eat an irradiated lettuce over some Russian roulette lettuce game in the supermarket. Noone wants to die over some (expletive deleted) salad.
At least you are for choice. If the feds have a choice here they destroy your choice and want to force their crap even if you do not want it. Doesn't crap cause e-coli?
Electrified water to veggie may help to kill germs. Hand washing is another technique to help to prevent contamination.
The technique of washing hands that can really help to kill germs is to wash thoroughly both hands about 15 seconds, such as singing a happy birthday song. If hand washing thoroughly is going to help to prevent germs contaimination.

One word, Monsanto. Only countries that do not want GMO food get hit.. hmmmmm

E. coli only comes from one place and that's feces.
and the Europeans can't tell that from a sprout? Maybe they can get some flash cards or something. Flip: SPROUT, flip: TURD, flip: SPROUT, flip:......
The root stock of e-coli comes from feces. If it is grown in a laboratory it does not need to come from feces, it can be spread on purpose.
E coli cannot be grown in a lab without feces!
These outbreaks of E coli usually come from contaminated water from slaughter houses used to water the plants.
Let me look, hmm, I did not read if there was any conditions there like you described. Obviously you do not know the purpose of research labs, they work with and manipulate what they are looking for to see what they can and can not do.

Wonderful. The EU has so much E-coli contamination they are having trouble finding "the" E-coli contamination.
Man!!! Them Germans sure got sh*t for food!!!!
and all this time you thought some of those German words for various dishes only sounded like some bodily waste?

Maybe it was those marijuana sprouts you put on your salad. That's it! :-O
Hey ..don't be dissin' marijuana ;)
European sprout farmers shoul be taught how to properly wash their hands!
They could wash them to their own music like:
"One sprout two sprout three sprout four, wipe your hiney and spread some more"
or:
"Day--- Daaay-oh----- E-coli come and me gotta go poo"
I wish the news would just SHUT UP about all this until they know for sure what is causing the problem.....
Seriously, can't people properly wash their vegetables? Or cook them for pete's sake!
Wasing them does not rid them of e-coli. and some ppl like a salad sheeseh

What on earth is a beet sprout? Seriously, editors?
Sprouted beet seeds. Very common in organic growing. Radish seeds are popular as well - have a nice, sharp taste to these sprouts.

So Germany happens to have 2 different cases of E.coli? One from Amsterdam and another from an unknown place? Anyone find that coincidence odd?
Holy Crap! It's the Radical Islamic Poopy Hand Gang!
We already know you don't wash, you don't have to remind everyone.

Boil veggie and wash fruits before eating.
