Starting September 1st all children enrolled in our child care center/preschool will have to be up to date on all required shots unless we get a letter from a pediatrician stating a medical reason why the child can't have the shots. So far we have two children who will be leaving our center, but most of the parents and the health department have applauded our decision. We are doing this on the advice of two physicians and an epidemiologist. These parents weren't around during the polio epidemics so they don't realize the importance of vaccines.
Most parents may not have been around when there were polio epidemics (including the ones caused by the vaccine), but they most certainly were around when live pertussis was pulled out because of the death and disability it was causing. It is pure ignorance to give or order children to be vaccinated without knowing what is in it, the full potential for reaction and side effects. The aforementioned daycare has apparently not read the package inserts which clearly state vaccination is not indicated for everyone, that they have not been tested in combination with any other vaccines, that the personnel administering them must be prepared to interrupt an anaphylactic reaction and that death and disability are listed as possible outcomes.
Unfortunately for some children, the first time it is discovered they are allergic to a vaccine ingredient is when the vaccine is given, and the outcome could be fatal.
Parents who have religious beliefs that do not permit vaccines are apparently unwelcome in that daycare as well. Every state has vaccine exemptions. All have exemptions for medical and religious. Eighteen states have philosophical exemptions as well. EVERY state includes evidence of immunity - lab confirmation the person is already immune and needs no further vaccines - to exempt from the vaccine schedule, which IS NOT MANDATORY in any state for enrollment in school. Even the "recommended schedule" is not the blueprint for all state requirements. Many states recommend only certain vaccines and consider others optional.
It is a tragedy the "experts" that have offered their "advice" have not offered fact and law along with it. There is one fact that parents are finally realizing. If a vaccine was given and the child was not an appropriate candidate for that vaccine, there is no way to take it back. There are no do-overs for the vaccine injured.
